It's very interesting to see that there are repeatedly long periods of stagnation, "things have always been this way and always will" is a common editorial from many time periods, usually called Dark Ages by later civilizations. And sudden periods of innovation and engineering/science advancements, advances in human condition, often called a Renaissance. We mostly get taught, if at all, about the later European versions of Dark Age and Renaissance, but that's just the lack of depth and breadth of modern education. The Muslim world had a flowering in medieval times that was crushed by the same kind of uptight anal retentive pricks that now rule Iran by terror and mass murder.
