I would be fine with such a tax if it replaced the existing tax scheme, which is to tax you by the gallon, which is effectively a tax on both miles driven, and the efficiency of your vehicle. Large vehicles use more fuel per mile, and cause more wear on roads and bridges, so a per gallon tax makes sense. However, something has to be done about electric cars, because they cause wear too, and their owners are currently not paying road taxes. A tax per mile might make sense there too, since it would be impractical (and easy to bypass) to put a meter between the wall outlet and the car. | ||

The usually binary Party system and our temporary leader see-saw means policy, foreign and domestic, can radically change at historically inconvenient moments, often triggering the SHTF of the day. I understand the frustration of other countries that we lack a long term consistency. The swings from isolationism to engagement is often the complaint. the 21st century has multiple fronts and at least 4 major conflicts. China vs. Everyone Russia vs. Europe E.U. vs. Europe Islamism vs. Everyone So each power shift ( election with leadership change ) often results in the newly appointed opposite Party Prez trying to undo the mess/success his predecessor left. And screws all our friends and allies in the process. I'm of the opinion that one Party does this more often, but I could be wrong. | ||

Afghanistan. I’m pretty disgusted by the whole thing. From us being there 20 years to the way we’re leaving. I find myself agreeing with Biden on several points, specifically the one about the Afgans not giving a shit. It was folly to believe we could get them to fight. It has always been a lost cause. Wouldn’t it be great if this was all a ruse to draw the Taliban out of hiding? Sigh. 20 years of blood and treasure shot to shit. Folks fell to their death from a cargo plane because they thought they could hold on to the outside of it in flight. This is the same country that produced a translator who thought it was impossible to go to the moon because it was too small to stand on. Lost cause. | ||

The obvious problem with this view is that as soon as we left, the forces that attacked us or collaborated in the attack would have returned to power. ....... It’s easy to forget that the rise of al Qaeda and other such movements was fueled by the successes of the Taliban and other such movements, coupled with the Clinton administration’s fecklessness in dealing with them. And the rise of ISIS was fueled by the Obama-Biden pullout from Iraq. It’s worth noting that the adverse consequences I discuss here — the resurgence of jihadists encouraged by America’s defeat and the inability to deal with threats emanating from Afghanistan — all flow from Biden’s decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, not from the way he carried it out. It’s also worth noting that we were preventing these consequences with a commitment of only 2,500 to 3,500 U.S. forces and very few American casualties. Every year I thank Freya I missed being a hostage in Iran when Jimmy Carter was Fool in Chief. By a little less than 2 weeks. Might be a good idea to send your prayers for the little girls of Afghanistan and the folk trying to escape. |
