I've always been one of those guys that didn't like Okra. Can you suggest an easy recipe to make it palatable? I'm open to new foods if they don't gross me out. |

Hot pickled okra is good IMO it’s best in gumbo with lots of shrimp or crawdads. I’ll get some fried okra sometimes at Popeyes, it’s very good when hot, loses a bit when it cools down. Z |

Most people in the south slice it into circles, coat it with flour and cornmeal, and fry it. It at least looks palatable that way. One of my college professors (in the mid-1970’s) said that a research group thought the slime produced by okra could be used to make artificial blood plasma. I’m guessing that didn’t work out. |

It is used as a "thickener" in some Indian dishes. During Lent I'll often have an okra curry for lunch or dinner. It's pretty good that way. I remember a photo of Daves trying to choke down pickled okra. I once saw a jar of hot, spicy pickled okra but I didn't want to buy the whole jar. Unfortunately they didn't have free samples, so I let it be. If I ever see it again maybe I'll give it a go. Of course, it isn't a proper Cajun gumbo without okra, too and I LOVE me some gumbo. |

I'll eat Gumbo every day, all day. I just pick out most the okra. I haven't had a good gumbo in quite a while but we have a Louisiana restaurant not far from here and it really sounds tasty. As Lazarus Long said: "Yield to temptation, it may not pass your way again." |

Okra is actually a close relative of hibiscus. I've given crimson okra seed from Madisonville TN to the keeper of gardens at Blackberry Farm. Farmer John. |

Grow your own. When you handle it without gloves, expect to itch. Highly nutritious. good for you. https://edibletulsa.ediblecommunities.com/recipes/ okra-ice-cream |

Geez, Brad... I had no idea you were such an okra aficionado! I've been trying to convince my wife to plant some. She's not into vegetable gardening though... just ornamentals but the okra flower is quite pretty. It should serve a dual purpose! |

Okra, IIRC, is one of the many plants that arrived with slaves from Africa. Heavily used in Creole and Cajun cuisine. Gumbo, anyone? I do love me some okra. Yes, it produces slime, but that is both its beauty and curse. Well, just like me, it takes some getting used to. Very good stuff!! I've actually not planted any in the past 2-3 seasons. As you grow it, you MUST pay close attention to the entire plant. When you spot a pod, it will quickly grow... if you overlook a pod, it will easily grow too big and become unusable for cooking. Small is best! Dammit now I want some fried okra... I've made a few killer batches, masticated them immediately. NOM. We've done a few batches of pickled okra too. Fry that stuff for a treat. Also pickled green tomatoes, which also turn out yummy when fried. Just had a smoked salmon scramble for breffix, with leftover garlic bread. Kroger had the salmon on clearance sale, almost bought them out... should have, but that would have been greedy. |
