My 27 year old son laid down his CBR 500 yesterday on the way home from work. He was behind a semi, looked over his shoulder to see if he could go around it and that's when the semi did a hard brake. Matt hit the front brake but missed the peg for the back brake. He said it went into tank slapper mode and he went down on his right side. He was only going about 20 - 25 mph.

He was shaken up but not hurt badly. Right forearm and right knee are scuffed up and he has some bruises but most of the damage is to his pride. The bike has some minor scraps and he broke off the front right turn signal.

I'm just glad he was able to walk away from it,

"I'm just glad he was able to walk away from it"
I'm sure we're all glad of that. If he decides to continue riding this will be a teachable moment for him to draw from forever.
My 26 year old son is considering taking up riding as well. I am trying not to influence his decision, but told him if he decides to go for it, I would pay for MSF lessons.

Yeah, Matt is scuffed up and sore but he came out of this as good as possible. I asked him and he plans to continue riding.

I'm just glad he's still in one piece.

Glad to hear he is good to go.
27 is a good age to get that out of the way.
They tend to heal faster and a good lesson has been burned into his brain housing group

One of my greatest friends, passed on several years now, was the area coordinator for the MSF program. Every time I head to Smoky Mountain H-D I like to run the course, just for fun, but also to reactivate my skill set. I often think of my old friend Rick when I do this.

I've always wanted to get the materials kit from these folks. Whenever I get to see a motor cop do his/her thing (YES, we now have a lady motor cop here in lil' ole Mur-vil!!),
I just stand and watch in awe.

Praise be to God that your son had that outcome. We just watched, again last night, The World's Fastest Indian. There are many parts of the script that speak to risk and reward. Might be an opportune time to have movie night with your son, Zane. Godspeed, and also God sight to you, yours, and all of us.

Finally got around to taking a couple of pictures of the bike. It came through a little scuffed up but really it's not in bad shape. Replace the turn signal and it'll be good to go.

Not too bad at all. This will be a valuable experience for him. One that came at a relatively low price.

Tell your son he must keep at least 4 seconds distance behind the vehicle in front of him at perfect road condition and visibility regardless his speed, the maneuver he is going to do or the vehicle he drives or rides. If the road condition or visibility or both are not perfect he must to increase the distance for more than 4 seconds accordingly. If your son would not tailgated it would not happened.

There are so many drivers ignores the safety rules and develops bad habits.

Sage advice, TP. I still habitually try to look at least 2, hopefully 4 or more cars/vehicles ahead, as I was taught as a boy. With the advent of SUV's (I say SUXX) and boxy design vehicles in general, this has become much more difficult. Scan CONSTANTLY. Even out in the country, when you're riding along and enjoying the scenery, a critter WILL pop out of the wilderness. Lately I've been working on closely observing my lines, and whether there might be fine gravel or sand approaching my front tire. Had a "teachable moment" just rolling into my doctor's parking lot a few weeks ago- yep, it was sand. If I drop that PC800, I'll FUBAR the plastics, not to mention potentially my own body parts.
Neither are replaceable.

Also, it has been shown that most accidents happen within 2 miles of home. Complacency hurts, and it can kill.
