I do know quite a few Elves were/are currently employed at Indian...haven't worked for a dealer for over a year though, so that may not be all that current. I'll reach out to some coworkers and see if I can find anything out.

The Indian thing is a new edition of the ftr, with 17" wheels, ohlins suspension availability and a few other minor things...no buell mumblings but they say another announcement is coming in February.

Let's just say Indian bought it or partnered in some way... Would they be able to resurrect something like the XB series with an Indian engine? Or is the basic design still covered by something that HD owns?

I assume they would be able to resurrect the EBR line of products though since LAP seems to hold the design IP for those machines.

But this is pure speculation, kind of a thought project since I have ZERO knowledge of what might be happening.

Well, it’s after 1400 on the 26 of January. Nothing apparent at the Indian or EBR sites.

I could see the chassis being useful to the right company, but I don't think Indian is that company. All of the engines Indian has appear to be too wide, and to open in cylinder angle for incorporation into an EBR style frame. while the EBR and the scout are both left side drive, the ET V2 is 72 degrees, the Scout is 60. And to be honest, why would I want a heavier compromised imitation of an 1125 that makes only 100 horsepower. Polaris does not make dirt bikes yet, and its possible that EBR has a stillborn, ( a 250 was mentioned here anonymously), version done and adaptable for an existing Polaris ATV motor. That might make sense but they have their own team of chassis people, with decades of off road experience to design a standard dirt bike perimeter frame. The EBR 1190 chassis design is to my mind too thoroughbred to dilute with another existing mass produced motor.
If an XB were to return, I would expect it to be someone like S&S or Ultima, who already have a sportster derived drivetrain to drop in.

But it would make for an interesting Frankensteining experiment.

yeah I've seen that, Its the complete reverse of what I was thinking, the ET V2 motor in something else. While EBR/Buell takes credit for the bike, as I understand, it was actually purpose built by the Cipala family for Logan Cipala to compete in hill climbing.
It's an impressive package to be sure, but I still don't see Indian interested in purchasing any of it.

Other than cylinder angle, my ftr engine is very close in dimensions (and architecture) to my 1125 and it is mostly a hot-rodded scout engine, kinda sorta. The 1125 has about 20 more hp than the ftr and spins up about 2k higher, but torque is about the same. I bet if you messed with fueling (not just the computer, actual TB changes), you could find some more hp inside the ftr. Ftr is very heavy comparatively, but at least most of the weight is down low, so you don't notice it much. It feels about as fast until it runs out of steam at about 130.

That's where I was thinking too. I don't see them making a high end competitive race or sport bike out of such a a mashup. If it cant compete with a bike that's been out of production for 10 years why would they bother. But Indian Scout engines would be cheap for them to use as new model powerplants.
As long as were speculating though, if they used a shorter stroke motor based on the Scout to get closer to 750cc, that might get them back a few thousand in the rev range, and give them a bit more room for shoehorning it in to the very responsive EBR chassis. A six speed with the right gearing might be able to use those revs more effectively. The top speed expectations from a sub 1000cc bike would be less ambitious so Indian could maybe make some hay out of a package like that. As much as I like ET V2 motor, I'm sure the EBR chassis designs are the more marketable IP, but its still a lot of rework for a compromise. Unless they can be had cheap enough to think the MSRP price point is an irresistible and easy target to hit.

There is a shorter-stroke Scout - the Scout 60.

I'm trying to recall...I believe the FTR and the Scout have different motors, completely.

Well it looks like the " big news" from Indian is 17" wheels. We have to wait until March to get Buell EBR news. I did a quick and crude comparison of the engine layouts between the FTR, Scout, and EBR, and then did some triangle solutions to figure out how big the triangle is. It looks like the Scout and FTR are the same 60deg cylinder bank angle, and share strokes of 73.6mm, but different bores.
The EBR, with a wider 72 degree bank angle, has bigger bores, but shorter stroke. This suggest unless the FTR /Scout heads are just too big to fit between the frame, geometrically an Indian FTR motor could possibly be made to fit in an EBR chassis. I still don't quite see what the motivation for either party would be, unless Indian buys EBR, or an agreement for EBR/Buell to use Indian powerplants for stepped up production (and resultant lower MSRP) is struck, but it's still an entertaining daydream.

Same-ish torque (the important number) but 120hp and 500lbs? I still prefer the 103hp and 395lbs on my 12 year old Buell.
She's a looker though!

Heavier sucks for a sport bike no matter where the added weight goes. Indian engine to my mind is a non-starter for an EBR

Even if it gets the brand, and the tech, back out on the road?

Indian is pretty good at innovation, and improvement steps...get a bike to market, and let them grow.

"EBR is obviously capable of engine---ering."
Well we know EBR USED to be.. Almost all, if not all of the engineering staff has long since moved on. The small assembly team of 2-3, and Kim in the business office seem to be the only holdovers. Without dissing the chassis engineers, engines are expensive to design and produce in quantity and still get the reliability of a consumer transportation product. IMHO the only way a mashup would work is if Indian used an existing chassis design from EBR and stuffed one of their motors in it. IMHO,(uninformed too), Polaris has way too much experience in offroad ATV chassis design to need an EBR drawing for that market. And the ET V2 is a monster, but an expensive one that could be replaced with a more modest horsepower mill, but more street oriented gearing, to achieve the same seat of the pants feeling up to felony speeds.
Top speed is only for bragging rights for most of us, but the roar on the entrance ramp is a real rush for all of us every time we ride.

The mock up of their "Super Tourer" is positively HIDEOUS. They need to hire someone who knows something about motorcycle STYLING. That thing looks like something slapped together out of spare parts...

The 2021 Buell 1190SX has been updated with full carbon fiber bodywork & improved ergonomics (including high bars, lower pegs, & handmade seats). Optional sport touring accessories coming soon.

I have been asking for Sx Carbon Fiber for some time, the Rx on the homepage is gorgeous.

I give Bill some credit...and hope to some degree Erik has some inputs going forward.
