25 million? So, now we know the California illegal immigrant population! ; )

Hoot, if your fund manager has made you happy, keep him. I don't have one, I have a list of choices. ( savings bonds, small cap, large cap, foreign meat additives, etc. ( list from memory ) )

https://www.schlockmercenary.com/blog/over-reactio n-is-the-best-reaction/

This social distancing thing is something we’re going to take seriously, though, because the best possible outcome is for us to look back on this and say “maybe we over-reacted.”

You see, the next-best outcome is a terrible one.
That’s the one where we look back on this and say “It’s a good thing we did all that, but we should have done more, and sooner.” We don’t get that outcome unless neighbors¹ are dying.

The worst outcome, at least for us, is the one where we discover just how sick this coronavirus can make a 52-year-old asthma sufferer, and exactly how deadly it can be to run out of beds and respirators in the ICU. And if we can get through the next few weeks without that happening, perhaps without that ever happening, we might feel like all our precautions were over-reactions.

And the luxury of being alive to whine about over-reacting is one I plan to cherish.

We got word at 4 ish today that Fleming's will shift to only takeout for at least the next 2 weeks. Talked to my sister, the hospital chaplain, she said bet on quite a bit longer.

Time to assess and quantify my variables.

Absolutely magnificent musicians. Trying to find one more song from them.

Interesting chart Blake put up. I think it provides a fairly good comparison of Italy and S. Korea. They are not far off in population, and the chart is based on deaths per million. When you start the day count as of the first death for Italy and the US, you really skew the data though. If we are comparing deaths per million, should the starting point not be an equal number of deaths per million also? To do that, the US chart should actually start on the day that we had either 5 or 6 deaths. I'm not sure how long that took in the US, but if it took, lets just say a week, you would need to move the blue line to the left by 7 days. That would put the trajectory much closer to what Italy has experienced, rather than S. Korea. When dealing with exponential growth, that sort of detail is incredibly misleading.

Having said that, the US did stop travel from hot spots early on. There is no doubt that has slowed the progression. It's part of why S. Korea looks drastically different than Italy. So we have that going for us. Once the spread gets going in the population though, travel restrictions from outside the country really have little overall effect. This really is a case where we are balancing life against the freedom to travel and make a living. Arguments are already being made that we have lost too much of our freedoms. Restoring those freedoms too early will come at the cost of many lives. At the same time, I really don't like our government putting new restrictions on us. They have a poor record of easing those restrictions when the "crisis" has passed. I really struggle with which does the greatest harm to our nation.

Here’s an interesting technical article I found on Twitter this morning. It discusses the successful use of “serum” to treat critical patients. Serum is filtered blood plasma from people who’ve had COVID-19 and recovered.

The MOST interesting statement in the article though is this:

quote:

The death toll is subsiding. There is a rumor that it was the on-coming warm weather that killed the coronavirus. The rumor claimed that the virus would perish at temperature over 25 deg. C, ignoring the fact that the same viruses usually claimed the human body at 42 deg. C. It is the ultra-violet sun wave that kills the viruses. The loss of destructive potency came after the coronaviruses had proliferated though certain number of generations; the number still awaited to be determined. This is a direct evidence that the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 was engineered or man-made. “Transduced” viruses always revert to their wild type, losing their insertions of transduced DNA that conveyed fatality to humans. This is analogous to a soldier like Rambo losing an arm or two after many battles overseas. In time, all “transduced” viruses will lose the killing capacity that they were engineered for, just like soldiers turning to become civilians. The common cold virus never disappears like the MERS and the SARS viruses because the cold viruses are natural products of evolution through tens of millions of years.

I'm concerned about losing freedoms forever as well. I'm not going to freak about it immediately, however. If this happened in early 2021 with a change in Prez, ( say, Hillary, Bernie, or whatshisname ) then I'd be less mellow. Probably downright paranoid.

Speculation about Pooh's Breath being a biological warfare weapon has been ongoing from the beginning.

It certainly has the effects you'd expect would be desired by the Xi regime. Stopped public protests against violations of treaties and freedoms. Hurts the economy to aid in electing a Democrat Prez. ( Joe, especially, as he's already paid for. But ANY Democrat or Communist would end Trump's resistance to Chinese conquest ) Kills more men to ease the gender gap. Reduces the number of peasants to feed. Etc.

It could even be an accidental release of a biowar agent, not deliberate. Or a bioengineering experiment that got loose because of corruption and lousy pay.

It doesn't matter that much to us civilians. I hope the remnants of our intelligence agencies that aren't treasonous scum appointed by Bill and Barry find out, and the guilty party destroyed.

If it's not just the usual lack of sanitation and proximity to poorly treated food critters, like the usual plagues to come out of China for literally thousands of years.

I had also read that viruses tend to become less lethal as they mutate all on their own. Or at least through natural selection. More lethal versions tend to kill the host faster, resulting less replication of the virus. Less lethal versions get to replicate more, as the host doesn't die, and can spread the virus to new hosts.

Assuming that is generally true, I'm not sure about the "evidence" that it was a man made virus. I'm not saying it wasn't, I'm just not sure of the "evidence" that it was. There is certainly circumstantial evidence that it was.

We go on house arrest this evening at 5 pm. I dont mind, I am a homebody anyway. I will have one set of grandkids since their mom works in healthcare and their dad construction. Neither one of those professions are stay in place positions. Jerry couriers for a cancer center so he will work as usual. I have learned to "love to cook" so we are good there even tho all the local eateries are offering drive thru or pick up options.
I clean 8 hours a week at a Mental Healthcare facility that is open some so I will still need to go there to sanitize and I have been helping our local school district pass out sack lunches to parents who are coming to get them for their kids. So, what I am saying is........unless something way different develops over this weekend, our lives will be pretty much like any summer day. (Carol)

If the People's Republik of Maryland decides to shut us down (but since I'm in a service industry, we'd be exempt anyway as "essential" services)...I'm stocking up on paint, so I can finally paint stuff at the house that's been on "the list" forever.

And I can do a shop day on sound gear, finally fix those dozens of mic cables that I haven't gotten to...

And I can work on cars and bikes that have been sitting neglected due to lack of time...

I've got plenty of stuff to do.

Our weather is typical springtime-Mother-Nature-PMS (81 yesterday; 50 today; 35 Monday) so mountain biking is out of the question, but the rowing machine in the basement is getting plenty of attention...

I working right now as a DBA for a big insurance company. I had been working from home 4 days a week so going to 5 days isn't a stretch. I'm on line from about 7:30 to 4 M - F and Friday night from 8:00 to 10:00 for maintenance window. My son and his fiancée both work for Starbucks. They have closed all lobbies and the girl will be working the drive through while the son will just stay home on paid leave.

I suspect .....at a time when this is in the rear view mirror .....that hand full of politicians will find their jobs in peril. Amazing to see so many leaders like deer in headlights.

Classic, this morning, was Fauci dropping his head into his hands when President Trump went off on the “deep state”.

DiBlasio hauled an entire security contingent and all the traipsing along media to a gym in Brooklyn yesterday....that was subsequently closed.

The Florida Governor who spent a week pondering the “do we close the beaches” question.

Intellectual Darwinism has consequences.

My favorite remains the idiot mayor in Illinois ( memory may be wrong) who ceded herself the authority to seize private weapons and property.

For a glimpse at what happens when politicians and the privledged try to out fox folks ch3ck out the situation in The Hamptons.

Wealthy folks fled, several with positive tests, to the area in SUVs and private jets....bought over 700 freezers last weekend and cleaned not most, but all the stores out ....one lady spendinG over $8,000 I Citarella.....the locals seem displeased.

Interesting times.

Summer weather? Perfect weather? We had 18 degrees and fresh snow this AM!

I'm off work till this blows over. I think I might be getting paid. I haven't heard the details though. I've got lots to do around the house so I won't be bored.

I did a trip to Home Depot this AM and they were wiping cart handles as they collected them. Wipes and hand sanitizer were at the entrance. Saw one couple wearing masks. Life seems fairly normal though.

My wife's brother-in-law is really freaking out though. I think more about the financial end. After years and years of not investing money, he finally put his cash into mutual funds just a few months ago! He's convinced he should sell it now. My wife spent over an hour on the phone yesterday trying to talk him down. He's a special kind of paranoid on a good day!

This does make for fun watching.......

Trump: these ventilators are highly sophisticated,, highly computerized delicate machines.

Pence: (steps to mic 30 seconds later). Manufactures tell us these are not at all complicated machines.

Fun stuff ......

Went to Home Depot earlier, and I had to park clear across the lot.

Place was packed. Almost nobody wearing masks, although store employees scurried around with sanitizer.

I'm currently at the coin op laundry, doing blankets and pillows in hot water and mild bleach.

Sitting here with my laptop watching an Hispanic man play 8 ball on one of the two coin op pool tables here. Little asian lady owner going around wiping things off. There are half a dozen of us here, seems like the normal Saturday crowd.

It's funny, the contrast between Trump (Americans can build some great, complicated, sophisticated machines and do it quickly), and Pence (our manufacturers can handle this, they're not too hard to make).

I can see both sides, but presentation is everything... I do think our automakers should have no problem producing ventilators, if the FDA steps out of the way and lets them build them.

Good discussion of the promise of chloroquine to treat COVID-19:

https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/is-hype -over-chloroquine-as-a-potential-covid-19-therapy- justified--67301

Apparently lots of doctors are already doing this. We should be able to confirm (or reject) this stuff being the magic bullet very quickly.
