“we’re mining cobalt” Tesla takes great care to ensure that none of the ever decreasing amount of cobalt in their batteries comes from ‘boutique’ mines, like the one depicted above. |

It's still part of world demand, which makes unscrupulous players very attractive. Kind of like federal funds into PP goes into their pool of operating funds. You can pretend that those dollars don't allow them to do more abortions, but that simply isn't the case. You can also pretend that buy buying huge amounts of cobalt from "reputable sources" doesn't put a stress on the supply side, making mining like that attractive. It's also like just buying oil from "the good guys". It still affects world wide demand, and there will be buyers who will buy from "the bad guys", simply because demand is higher than what "the good guys" can supply. I'm not meaning to make Tesla to be the bad guy in this, but to believe you can consume great quantities of any limited resource without down side effects is simply untrue. |

It’s a poor comparison. PP shuffling money around internally doesn’t compare to Tesla not sourcing blood Cobalt for their products when other companies do. Tesla cannot do anything about what other companies do. |

Like I said, I'm not trying to make Tesla out to be the bad guy, but right now, demand for cobalt, which Tesla is a big part of, promotes this sort of thing. Let me put it this way, if we weren't building electric cars, the demand for cobalt would be less. Less demand makes black/gray market sources less appealing to other manufacturers simply because prices will be lower. OK, I really have no idea what percentage of the world cobalt market Tesla accounts for, but they are a major battery supplier. It's been argued that they are more of a battery company than a car company. I think it's safe to say that they are a pretty major player. That doesn't make them evil. Evil just looks for a place to thrive. One place for that right now is the cobalt market. |
