So those that were at the West Virginia Buell rally might remember me readjusting my push rods on the Barcalounger. It didn't help much and by the time I got home she was really ticking loud! I put another set of tappets in it but it was no different. I pulled the front rocker cover off and found excessive endplay on the exhaust rocker. Both had more than needed. I found some info on the internet that you can shim these rockers which I had already done. However, they mentioned that you needed a minimum of .020" thickness on the shim or they would tear up. Well in order to do that I had to machine some clearance to allow such a shim. I did this and everything looked great. I decided to prefill the cavity in the rocker arm so I took the oil can and started pumping oil into the intake rocker until it squirted out by the valve hole. I then did the exhaust side and oil came squirting out of the rocker just above the oil can!!! The weld they had put on there to plug the hole they drilled had a 1/32" hole in the middle of it!! There goes any oil pressure!! I took it down to my buddy's engine shop and had him tig weld it closed. He looked at me and shook his head and just said, "only you!" It wasn't the first thing I've brought him that he's never seen before!

Another missed opportunity for JB weld and a screw.

Good find. That's a deep look that few mechanics would discover.

If I hadn't pumped oil in there I'd never noticed it. The hole was not round so to my blind eye's it looked like some weld slag. Originally it probably was but the vibration finally knocked it loose leaving a hole.

Just an update. I finally got it all back together and fired it up. It ticked really loud for 30 seconds or so and I was getting worried. Out of frustration I revved it up a little and it went quiet! Sounded more like a sewing machine. I took it for a ride and it was a pleasure to ride again. You can hear the rockers still but at such a low volume it's almost soothing!!

On another note, I've almost got all the parts to convert it to fuel injection. I found a 2003 fuel tank that has the anniversary emblems on it. One's missing but I can still get it from Harley. The tank has no dents and was cheap due to the missing emblem. I think the only thing I need is a ThunderMax ecm. Self tuning unit that uses wide band O2 sensors to dial it in. Should be great for crossing the country at different elevations. I used to hate the idea of fuel injection. Over the years I've had lots of experience dialing in carbs. I made the mistake of putting an air/fuel ratio gauge on the bike and actually seeing how lousy a carb really is! After owning the Uly and learning ECMSPY I started enjoying the control and accuracy you can obtain. Then my racing partner wanted fuel injection on his race car so we did that. It drives so much better now but to be honest, the peak numbers aren't any better than the side draft Webers we took off!

They went to fuel injection across the motor vehicle industry for emission comtrol, not power increases. And better fuel economy.

Or if you're VW, all three, but not at the same time. ; )

Love Weber carbs.

Had a side-draft DCOE on my Lotus Europa.
The carb and velocity stacks were bigger than the engine.

Only other one was a down-draft DGV I put on a Datsun 2-liter pick-up.
After the addition, it smoked a new set of Pirellis in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and chirped 4th.

Simple and very easy to rebuild - minimal gaskets, lots of machined faces for sealing.
DCOE had a cap with a wing-nut to access main and mid jets.

DDFI is still better than they were...

Yes, driveability and fuel mileage are what I'm looking for.

I too love the Weber DCOE. I think I dialed in at least 6 sets of Webers last year at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. Having the little cap on top makes jetting changes a quick and easy job. One guy at a drivers school had a 6 cylinder with triple Webers. He was running poorly and really using gas. I pulled the caps on all of them and found a loose Main jet holder. I tightened it and fixed all his issues. Took less then 5 minutes! Great carbs for sure. I had them on my 1976 2002. I put in the Ferrari parts for syncronizing them and it made it so easy. I drove that car for 14 years and it always ran great.

OK, figured this thread would suffice given the title. I'm completely baffled.

As any homeowner knows, critter/pest control is needed from time to time. Rodents come and go (ideally go, in a trap), simply a fact of life. So, my neighbor rents out the house next door, and they've had rodent issues (rats). I put out a couple of snap traps, one for rats and one for mice in the shed. Every now and then I'll get a mouse. But here's what's baffling... what's going on in the crawlspace.

Once I heard about the neighbor's issues, I put out two big snap traps in the crawlspace. Next day, both GONE. Went out and bought two more, next day,
GONE AGAIN. As far as I could shine a light and see, just gone! WTF!?!?

So, went to the co-op and bought a cage trap, with the drop-doors each end, baited with PB and sunflower seed. Bait cleared, doors dropped, NADA. NOTHING!! This has happened 3 times! I've inspected the trap, no idea how this is happening. I've got a Houdini critter of some sort. Unbelievable. All I know to do now is get a hunter's camera.

Ideas???

Is the trap big enough for a raccoon? Coon's are amazing creatures and highly intelligent! I've watched them figure out how to open trash cans etc! I had one for a pet, best pet I ever had!

Doubt it's a raccoon, my two boys would've sniffed it out. As for the snap traps, (a) those things will dispatch a rat or anything smaller, no problem- they're dang strong, (b) if one just maimed a bigger animal, you'd think we'd hear something. Nope, just gone.

The cage trap's metal mesh is seemingly too fine to have a critter reach in the side for the bait without going into the trap. Only a smart critter (like a raccoon) would figure that out. I'm stumped. Might just get an IR hunter's camera.
