I've had a cold for over 14 days. With the meds it hasn't really gotten better and I do not like the meds. I am going back to the doc in the morning to let them know the dizzy is getting worse. I checked the uses of the syrup they gave me to help with sleep at night. It should help with the nausea tonight. Then I looked at what it said about indications of an overdose and this was in the list: sudden death. What the....

A 14 day cold isn't a cold. Get a 2nd opinion, and don't F around. We almost lost a brother from another mother to double pneumonia recently, he finally called the ambulance when he started coughing up blood.

I'm probably crazy . . . . but, I avoid folks in the winter. Between subways, public places in the office and being on flights 4 or 5 times a month . . . well, I'm not a gramophone . . but I am careful.

Worst . . the tray tables in airlines. Some outfit did a story a while back and there are like 12X as many germs on the tray table as the toilet set in the airport. I've gotten in the habit if wiping everything down the moment I am seated.

I've managed to go about 5 years without any sort of cold, sniffles of anything and I like hiding out during the winters.

I'm like you RD . . .that "sudden death" thing would get my attention. If I take 2 Aspirin a year . . it's been a big year for mens for me.

Pediatrics doctors offices. Avoid like the plague. Literally.

Just walking in, saying hi, touching the door knob. Third tier antibiotics, to battle an ear infection. The kind they only pull out of the vault for Ebola or something only it, or fire, can cure. They want it in reserve, to sneak up on bugs that have been bred to immortality by stupid people demanding antibiotics for a cold.

They have to send an email, to the CDC, so I don't count on death statistics anymore.

OH, first they tried the usual stuff. Then the stuff I'm allergic to, but "you want to dissolve into goo? Or just stop breathing? Up to you!" That didn't work. So, the vault. "If this doesn't work, we have to cremate the body to save the planet. We've scheduled you for the 31st. Be here early and have no metal in your pockets."

Once weather cools off, I add Airborne chewables to my daily regimen as well as keeping a big honkin' bottle of Vitamin C gummies by my TV chair. I eat those like potato chips - good taste, and I'll just pee out any "overdose" amounts.

My other, less-conventional, cold-weather "medicine"? Alpine brand sugar-free hot spiced cider mix (little packets like hot chocolate; they're in the coffee/tea aisle at my local grocery)...with 2 fingers of spiced rum mixed in. Certainly helps one sleep, and the cider is pretty full of C as well. And Calypso spiced rum tastes just as good as Cap'n Morgan...for about 1/2 the price.

But, Airborne is the shiznit. Seriously. I work in Sales and deal with god-knows-what on a daily basis, in addition to my sound company gigs on weekends...in bars...full of people dancing and yelling and sweating. I keep a bottle of the chewables in my desk at all times (they taste a lot better than the effervescents to me) and will go through a half dozen or so per day.

Escalated to Doxycycline. My son just had his appendix removed over seas. He doesn't speak korean and the doctors didn't speak english. So, he started asking questions in arabic and someone there started answering his questions. The appendix had ruptured. He is doing well today considering. At least I am not stuck in the hospital in a foreign land. They let him eat lunch last night.

Airborne uses "debunked" vitamin cult ideas.

And works pretty good, imho. Vitamin C is another "debunked" cult. I was a member. Tested it over years. Got an unexpected result.

I popped a gram of C a day. That's more than a human needs, so you just wizz the excess, with no known bad side effects. I didn't have a cold, unless I stopped taking excess C, then I got one, every time.

Conclusion? Stopping C causes colds. ; )

In fact, the change in balance opened my system to colds. So, I stopped taking C, and went to 3-5 colds a year with about 1-2 days off for the worst ones.

Since I was exposed to everything, I was a good control group & test subject experiment.

So, take C religiously, or don't bother. If you are OCD about daily pill taking, you may get a better chance of avoiding colds, and there is no downside except to your wallet. And arguably you save a fortune by not buying cold symptom drugs. If you forget to take your meds for over a day, frequently, don't bother.

But!

Some vitamins, like E, are not flushed from the system if you take excess ( but not insane half pound quantity ) like C is. They build up and can poison you. Even a single overdose can kill. Luckily the pills are small so 1-2 daily typical E supplement pills probably won't hurt you. Eating a lion or polar bear liver for lunch? That can kill. ( Vitamin E is concentrated in carnivore livers )

My personal opinion is Airborne and C work, mostly. See caveats above.

And, I don't use cold symptom relief drugs, at all. A hot shower, chicken soup, & bed suffice and without narcotic side effects. For me. Ymmv.

I do keep Benadryl handy for allergic reactions. Bad news for me, is I've become allergic to some metal preservative chemical, and have to wear gloves if I work in a buddy's bike shop or the Strategic Air Command museum. Or my hands swell up, follow by more severe reactions.

I take benadryl daily so I can breathe thru my nose.
Unhappy when I'm a mouth breathing troglodyte.
Cool side effect: no longer allergic to wasps, in fact, immune.
Got 10-15 stings in my side and armpit and they didn't even itch when I picked up a ladder with a nest.

I take a 400U vitamin E daily, the old man I'm a POA for medical and financial, takes a 3000U once a week.
E has a long bio half life unlike C.

He (son) will find out late tonight, if he gets to go back to the base. I am starting to get rid of symptoms. I found a food I had not tried. I think it very good. KIRKLAND signature Tart Montmorency Cherries, WHOLE DRIED. Consistency is like raisins. Tart, sweet, ripe cherry flavor. Most delectable, amazing. Costco carries them in a (1 LB 4 OZ) resealable bag.

I'm into the tart cherry thing, when I remember. ( thanks for reminding me ) I drink the juice. Helps with arthritis and gout. Doctors, real ones, agree.

A buddy is also into the vinegar... but only the expensive natural kind with the must. He insists it helps, and his smelling got better in a week!

Duh, he burned out anything protecting his sinuses!

Not sure about the vinegar business, myself.

Vinegar with the mother has helped me in the past. I have gotten off of my gout meds. I've been eating raw cherries to keep the monster away. Good luck so far. My body will do even better if I reduce it's mass.

RD- maybe by the time I see you in May, I can get you some of my homegrown cherries. We managed to harvest about 30# of cherries last year from just one tree, made jam and jelly, even some pies- still have some of those frozen, just add some vanilla frozen yogurt...

Might have to invest in a dehydrator this year. My garden didn't do well with tomatoes last year, gonna order some Baker Creek Heirlooms seed to fix that. ; )

My youngest sister called me today. She is over 21 years younger than me. In the morning I go to the Dentist for a regular cleaning. Then I get in the car and drive south. About 1100 miles to Port Charlotte, FL. Doctors said my Dad has a couple of days or weeks. Last time I saw him was 21 years ago.

My plans are to drive at least to Atlanta. If I get tired, I am planning on a 3 hour nap in the car in a rest area. I would like to stop at the south end of GA near the border for the night. Unless I catch two rest area naps. Looks like it's 16 hours of wheel time not counting fuel, food, and nap stops. So there is a good chance I'll stop for the night, dinner, and a soft bed. The wrecker truck job taught me my limits. I'm not pushing it that far.

+1, focus on the task. Put some good headlights in the vehicle to reduce eyestrain and mental strain. I'd offer a crash pad on the way but MD is a little east for your route...but door's open if you head this route for some reason.

Use the bike-trip mentality: fuel stop, fill up. Walk 3 or 4 laps around the pump. Go inside, hit the head (if you don't have to go, you're dehydrating), grab a snack and fluids, and breathe.

My "road-food" is usually McFood, or BK - chicken nuggets and a large fry, all dumped into the bag. Top of the bag ripped off to make it half as tall (easier no-look food grabbing without the bag getting in the way), and some sort of brown caffeinated beverage in the cupholder. Easy no-look eating, no mess (no fluids or sauces), and just as good (well...relative term lol) cold if you don't finish it all at once.

If you don't have it on your personal vehicle...consider renting something that has adaptive cruise control, if you have the means. I swear by it. Radar-sensors on the front of my Grand Cherokee. Set cruise for 78mph. Radar sees a car in front of me, doing...say...70. Senses it, and paces it. Will come to a complete STOP if needed, all on its own. When I drive from MD to FL, all I have to do - literally - is stay awake and steer. And newer vehicles (my jeep is a '14) have lane-departure warnings as well as adaptive cruise, they buzz the seat and the steering wheel to let you know when they sense approaching the lines. It doesn't sound like much, but over 1,100 miles? It. Is. YUGE.

The 17-speaker Harman-Kardon stereo in my Jeep doesn't hurt either : )

My diesel Grand will do that easily at 74mph. at 70, I've logged a tank-average of 32mpg.

I get it - I'm fuel-frugal and dollar-frugal every day. But, we lost dad in '16 and...sometimes, the priority needs to be the family, and the rest will work itself out. Get there safe, be there for support, stay as long as is needed. I left work in '16 saying "I don't know how long I'll be gone". All-in, it was nearly a month - and my peace of mind because of that is through the roof. You'll make the right choices.

Grab "gasbuddy" for your phone, to check fuel prices by state. I want to say SC has some of the lowest, but maybe NC...GA is pricey...but it's worth the research. Like, to the tune of nearly $1 a gallon.

Get some yellow driving glasses. They work.
Forget the 3h nap, it's a waste of time, you drop into deep sleep but don't get enough so you're just as tired, if not more so, when you wake.
Just nap for a max half hour, it'll refresh you, then grab a motel for the night.
If you need an energy drink, try Kickstart, it has none of that Taurine crap.
Good luck and go steady.

Hey RD, just picked up this thread today- my door's open if you need to stop on the way down. At any rate, be safe, look after you and yours as best you can.

Edit- +1 on the yellow glasses. When I wore contacts I'd swear by them, especially on a dreary, overcast day like we've been having. And thanks Grumps on the energy drink tip- I drank a couple of those Rockstars last time I traveled to Nashville, dang if my kidneys didn't hurt the next day. There's a point where I just can't coffee it anymore...

45 miles from Florida on 75. Staying at days inn tonight. Ihop opens at 6 in the morning. Then I'll drive the last 350 miles. Pineapple and Hawaiian rolls for supper.
Winding down. 72 mph got 28 mpg in a jeep with an automatic. Yeah, a renegade. I can get over 30 if I hold it under 70. Monsters and doughnuts I hold in reserve for emergencies. I could tag another 400 miles with them. Not a good thing though.

It looks like the next vay-cay is at Twos end of March. I am planning on trying camping there. I have batteries for the CPAP. If I sell a power chair, I may come up with solar panels to charge them. At this point I am planning on trailering LilRed down. I'd get better tire life if I quit slabbin' him. I have spare trailer hubs, wheels, and tires on order. Still need new plywood floor and a wheel chock.

Check up at Doctor's office. Just some high carb related stuff now. Made a deal with the doctor. If I drop 6 pounds in 6 months, he will take me off another medication. I'm down to three now. The goal is to be medication free within 2 years.
