So I finally started booking rooms and think I have my plans finalized. Let me know if I should throw something else in the mix.

Friday night...... fly in about 11pm and make a b-line for Manitou Springs.
Saturday...... get up and head to PP (weather permitting) then over to the Garden of the Gods for the afternoon. Spend Saturday night in downtown Colorado Springs at The Antlers. Looks like a nice hotel with plenty of live music within walking distance.
Sunday...... Make a b-line for RMNP and spend the day there and staying in Estes Park.
Monday...... Spend the morning in RMNP and then head to Red Rocks for the afternoon and wait for the show.
Tuesday...... open but I think I'm going to check out the Denver scene and fly out around 4.

Nut, what show are you going to at Red Rocks, A Perfect Circle? What kind of car are you renting, all wheel drive? Did you consider taking Hwy 24 out of the Springs to Hartsel then Hwy 9 north through Breckenridge to Kremmling, Hwy 40 to Hwy 34 up to Grand Lake. Grand Lake is the west side of RMNP, then you are sure to drive all the way through the park and over Trail Ridge Rd to Estes Park. If you do this you'll see new country and won't be backtracking. If you have all wheel drive, you should be fine without chains. If the traction law goes into affect, rentals with two wheel drive probably won't have real snows on them, and that can be a real issue. If you keep an eye on the weather, a system big enough to cause a significant snowfall that time year is rarely unpredicted.

Something you might get to see going over Trail Ridge Rd.

Yes going to see APC at RR. I am renting a Jeep Compass but can't find any info whether it is 4wd or not. If not I'll upgrade and get something that is.

I haven't planned my route from CS to RMNP and appreciate any/all recommendations for roads to travel. I also have not booked my room for Sunday or Monday so my plans can still be modified for sure.

I'll take a look at the route you suggested. Thank you!

Red Rocks is hands down my favorite place to see a concert. Ever.

I've seen so many bands there I just can't remember them all (never saw Grateful Dead and RR was their favorite place to play. All their music sounds like one long song to me). I'm in a few videos too. U2 Sunday Bloody Sunday. I'm in row 3 or 4 right in the middle.

I love that place...

There is a cemetery nearby (used to be anyway) and is worth the stop. It's in RR, near one of the parking lots.

Needs_o2....... Would going 24/9/40/34 be a nicer route than going north and hitting the peak to peak highway or should I hit PtP on my way going back towards Red Rocks?

Yeah, take the P2P down to Red Rocks. If you do take the route I suggested, let me know, we're right above Hwy 9, just north of Silverthorne, and maybe we could hook up for lunch or something. Breck is cool mountain town to check out on your way through. I'm hearing bugling across the hwy right now, but they probably be mostly done with the rut when you get out here. You will still get to see hanging around here or RMNP.

This guy was across the hwy last week.

The one thing that has me worried is this message in the map of the RMNP.

On the RMNP website it stated that the Trail Ridge Road didn't close till Oct 27th last year. I "hopefully" will be driving down it on Oct 21st of this year...... fingers crossed. : )

No freezing temps here on the flats yet.
Saw a 10-day forecast with 28 degree lows and possible snow in a week.
Today all the forecast lows were 5-7 degrees warmer.

Weather looks good for you now...

Hope you can do P2P, it's a beautiful drive/ride.

Well the Jeep Compass I rented is 4wd so at least I don't have to worry about that.

I believe I'm staying in Denver Monday night. Any good sightseeing to do in Denver?

Trail Ridge is usually the first to close.
Something about being the highest elevation or something....

P2P wil close later.

The sun up here does amazing things. Once these hurricane remnants get through here, you could be up there in shorts and getting a tan.

Yeah I'm going to hold off on getting a room booked for Sunday and Monday night till I get there. I figure I might as well see what the weather is before I commit to going up to RMNP.

I ended up dumping the Compass for a Jeep Patriot. Got the Patriot for 1/2 the price of the Compass. They're both 4wd, the rest doesn't matter to me.

Ya know it's funny how things change......

So Delta decided to change my flight to Denver getting my there around midnight. In the notice it mentioned that if I didn't like the changes that I could change my flights for free. So I gave them a call and I was able to get a flight leaving at 11:30am vs. 5:00pm. So with this new flight it is bringing my through Minneapolis instead of Detroit. So while I had the person on the phone I asked if there is a later flight on the second leg of the flights. She said the next flight out to Denver would be at 5:45. I asked if I could have that flight instead of the one she was going to book me on. She says "Why would you want a 3 hour layover and not the 20 minute one I booked?"

Looks like I'm taking my wife for an early dinner at The Mall of America!!! She has never been there and it'll be cool to show her around. I think that place is neat and it is like a 10 minute tram ride from the airport.

So now I get into Denver at 7pm and will be driving to CS. If anyone is in the area and wants to grab a beer, let me know. I will be in CS Friday and Saturday.

If weather cooperates I'll be staying at the Stanley Hotel on Sunday night.

Jim
If you're going to Estes and The Stanley, swing by the shop.
Didn't think you were coming this far north - gets pretty old having no social life.
Longmont is just south of Loveland, and the Big Thompson(Hwy 34) is a great drive from Estes to Loveland.

<Edit> One more...Weather forecast for the next week is highs in the 60s to upper 50s and dry.
Lows in the mid to upper 30s.

Here is the trip I plan on doing this Sunday from Colorado Springs. With stops I'm guessing it'll be a 12 hour day.

https://goo.gl/maps/bcdS7xPXW3B2

Monday we are planning on driving down to Red Rocks Park for the show via the Peak to Peak highway. All though I'd love to (and would if I was alone) come by and check out your shop, convincing my wife to make a detour to check out your shop probably will not end well. lol
So far.......It looks like the weather is going to be ok so we'll be hanging somewhere in Estes Park Sunday night. More than likely we'll be staying in Denver Monday night then flying back the next day. Unfortunately this is just a quick getaway for us based around getting to see a show at Red Rocks off my bucket list. : )

I'll be looking for live music in all the places we are staying at so I'll post up here where we are planning on going if anyone wants to meet up.

You're going to ride through South Park! It's not a town; it's a 40 mile wide plain up in the mountains; when you turn from Rt. 9 onto US Rt. 24 east.

Hey Jim,

I've been out of touch for the last couple of days, out chasing Wapiti and packing out a 5x5 bull. Have they said Trail Ridge Rd is closed for the season? If so, I'm glad to see your still planning on coming up through the mountains and you can still go part way into the west side of the park, a better chance of seeing moose than the east side. What time do you plan on hitting the road Sunday morning?
