Last year i was in Vegas for 4th July, revelling in the craziness of American's access to fireworks... soooo much fireworks. I recall a sign saying 'buy 1, get 3 FREE!'. That was about the same time, on our drive back from Death Valley; I spotted a elderly bloke in McDonalds in Pahrump with a gun holstered on his hip. That was our first spotting on a civilian 'holding'!
I recall the strip had near to no firework show - but from the hotel room i could see over the suburbs and the show just didn't stop all night.
Zac4mac, Don't take the sedative. It's really not a big deal. It's more about strangers doing things that make you uncomfortable. I called a doctor on a lie who said I said something to him while I was under the sedative. I pointed out that I hadn't agreed to the sedative. He was pretty red faced.
Driving to south west bum frick Indiana from south central Pa.to see the in-laws. 12 hours each way and have to be back on Sunday. So much for Independents day !
So- drive Wednesday, roads should be clear, yeah, 12 hours out and back sucks. But you're doing it for the right reasons. Tr/Fr/Sa off, and then head home.
Leave early enuf and you can see shiz blow up. You misspeld Independence.
Have a great and safe 4th, watch out for falling anvils.
I'll be prepping my fishing paddleboard and gear. Game and fish is opening a phosphate pit to the public that has never been fished aside from a few that have sneaked in.
123 acres, dug in 1962, it should be full fish that have never seen a hook. The last "new" pit they opened was 8 years ago. I was in line at 11:30 pm waiting for gate opening at 6:00 am. That time I caught 3 over 10 pounds, 6 over 7 pounds and had 3 break off 30 pound test line.
Hope I get there early enough. It is first come, first serve, with no reservations.
Well, I was going to go up to Washington to pickup my dog from training (Duck Dog Dottie), but since I have to watch the other animals, I sent the SO with her parents and a box full of fireworks to blow off. Several dozen mortars and rockets.
Too dry to light off anything here.
She also gets to learn how to shoot a shotgun with her sister. Funny that the Vegetarian gets to take her dog duck hunting...
Kills me everytime.
She just sent me a picture from their fishing trip today. She caught the first fish and the most fish.
For many years me, and a couple of my neighbors in a subdivision somewhere in Florida got into popping some stuff for the fourth and new years.
Started with 10 minutes of bang pop oooh! Until I met a guy who knew a guy.
Our next neighborhood event more people would come out to watch. We started with bang, pop, woah! Then half hour in, the last shot was a real 6" mortar. It equaled screams of oh my god and people running home with their lawn chairs to turn off car and home alarms. It went off perfectly, but may have been too much for the neighborhood.
Skip ahead three years of growth where each event had at least two of the big mortars, dozens of actual quarter sticks on Estes rocket motors, and thirty or better of the 2 inch mortars wired in series. Along with grocery bags of hand held stuff. $1600 worth.
Then came the last year I was involved. The crowd was well over a hundred, we blocked the street. We combined spent over $2k.
We had six big mortars, my neighbor spent two weeks wiring and rigging 100 of those nice 2 inch mortars in series foil packing to prevent premature ignition. Hundreds of dollars of smaller shit. A giant roll of fire crackers forty feet long that took over ten minutes to finish, lots more quarter stick toys.
The cops showed up telling us they were ready to answer the complaint calls, but said they had been watching our shows every year. They said ours was better than the municipality could do.
Any who as the show got underway our crowd had attracted a few older teenage asshats who brought their own stuff. The stupid kind of fireworks that we did not have that cause problems. Roman candles of the hand held variety. They were popping them into the crowd and into our preloaded area. They also brought those hot flying zippers that go any direction.
These idiots were asked to leave after one of the zippers hurt some little kid and they set off a small string of our 2 inch mortars.
Our cop buddies had to leave so when these little shits got bounced by the crowd they went a street over firing anything they could over the houses into our people. One of their fire balls made it into my neighbors garage where half of our stuff left was staged on his new bass boat. We got lucky it was the last sparkling ball of a Roman candle! It did not set anything off.
We finished our show. The crowd cheered, we had every broom in the neighborhood and several industrial garbage bags and a group of about thirty neighbors cleaning the street.
Mostly good people.
I never did it again. We each spent over $500, it was a blast for sure. Not legal made it more fun. Being that close to burning down houses over fun, no more. Thanks to the asshats those of us doing the deed all ended up with minor burns from uncontrolled ignition.
So from that day..... it! We go out to the lake in the boat or to a municipal event somewhere. Or stay home during dry years to protect the property.
Not sure what I'm doing on the 4th, but I've been helping a group called Warrior Sailing get a float together for a local parade.
There will be some boards with the names of local fallen service members below where it says "Recent Fallen Heroes From Norther Michigan". A few more details to add. They are a great group that uses sailboat racing with other vets as a therapy/transition for other vets returning to civilian life. Here in Traverse City they were lucky enough to get a 43 foot sloop that's stripped down for racing.
Cool group of guys to have met.
Meanwhile, the Blue Angels are in town, practicing over my house. Not bad for a cell phone pic!
I'll be out on the bay on a sailboat Saturday for the air show. By far, the best way to see the show!
Here's where I spent my day today. Really hot weather. Good to be on the bay! Great air show. Other than the Blue Angles, this B-17 was best in show IMO.
Distributing porter to the thirsty masses! This is 2 gallons brewed from an extract kit from a local store. It was 103 degrees today and the porter was nice and so very cold and creamy.
