I've been wanting a big touring bike for a couple of years now and finally pulled the pin. It's a used 2017 Gold Wing with 5200 miles. It's not a Buell but I have room in my heart to love this bike too.
It was a lot of money but I'm getting older and decided I deserve a little creature comforts. This this has a double ton.
As you enjoy your seat heater and satellite radio with the cruise control on, I'll hide my jealousy by telling myself I'm a 'true' motorcyclist while my punishing my taint on a hard seat with a dead throttle hand as my envy of your sweet ride eats away at my black heart.
NICE!!!! that was a shortlist bike when I bought the S3 along with the 1150 RT 1300 FJR, along with the Duc ST4 and the Triumph Trophy. Good used examples of all of the above at the time were jut too much for the budget. Buell had all the check boxes I required, but was a no frills comparison. Fortunately, no frills is my normal.
great touring mount...check out the SCMA (Southern California Motorcycle Association) web site (https://sc-ma.com) if you're into some long rides...we usually do the 3 flags tour (MX-US-CAN) happens around labor Day.... a group a little closer to home for you is the Arizona Rat Pack (http://azratpack.com) they are associated with the SCMA...takes about 10K miles to break in the seat...I like Avons on my 2012 (great for cornering)...ride smart, ride safe
I have about 100 miles on it so far and wow it's a different riding experience. It's smooth as butter going down the street.
Some of the things I've noticed:
It's not as powerful as I expected. It doesn't accelerate near as fast as my XT, but then again it weights more than 2 as much.
It doesn't like really sharp, short turns. Starting from a stop and turning into a narrow driveway isn't this bikes strong point.
I'm still learning the best shifting points for it too. With the XT, just wind it out and shift. This bike is a little more picky.
It's so big, it's garage manors aren't as good as some bikes. It's just too heavy to throw around inside the garage. Turning around on my sloping driveway can be "interesting" too.
From behind, it's about 3 times as wide as the XT. I've nicked named her my "fat bottomed girl".
Over all though, I think this is exactly what I want for stable mate for the XT.
My original plan was to sell the XT and use the money to defray the cost of the Wing. They offered me next to nothing for a trade in so figured I could sell it privately and make out better. But when push came to shove, I just couldn't put the XT on the market. I just am not ready to part with it. After all, I've only owned it for 8 years. There is a ton of mile that she still needs to be ridden.
5200 miles is not even broke in on that bike! I'm with you on desiring more comfort with age. I traded my Uylsses for a MV Agusta Turismo Veloce earlier this year. The MV has all the hooligan characteristics of the Ulysses. With a little more wind protection and it has cruise control!
That's not a bike, that is half a car With the kind of weather in your neck of the woods, it probably is a must during the summer months. Congratulations Now beat feet out here for our Annual breakfast...you've got a couple of days to get here Zane
Dude was AMAZING to watch... for as long as you could keep up!! He'd sit at the Deal's Gap store with a sign that said "Film your Dragon Ride, $20", had 3 cameras front, 2 in the back, with a full DVR rig in his topcase. Sportbikers would incredulously ask, "Can you keep up with us on that thing?" What they didn't know was that he'd done an Iron Butt just running Deal's Gap! Also, threw big $$$ at Computrack in GA to upgrade the suspension... rumor had it that he was from NY state and his wife threatened to leave him if he didn't come home. I've always wondered what happened to him...

I've stopped holding my breath on that option. . . . . At the prices the 2008+ XT's sell for it's cheaper to simply pay the insurance and tags on them and keep them around for the once or twice a year rides.
I just did the annual fluids in mine and . . . if a car I am thinking about materializes . . . it'll end up living under a tarp behind the barn until I have the new, and improved, barn built.
I'd just ride that Gold Wing everywhere that catches your fancy . . . and enjoy the heck out of it. You'll learn . . . in fact, you already are, its quirks and nuances and don't be so foolish as to try to make it something it's not . . . it's a GREAT bike . . thanks in large part to Joe Boyd . . have fun and keep smiling!
Congratulations, Zane! That is a beauty and you look good on it. I'm with you, those first two responses above had me laughing. Hey, what a great group these Badwebbers are, huh? Real, positive responses! Enjoy and ride safe.
I like the looks of the FB6 wings. If I were ever to go that way, I would love to try one of those out. As it happens, I am poking around, looking for smaller, cheaper, slower bikes.
P.S. Why are old dual sport bikes so expensive? mid-90's 350s are going for over $2000 for some reason.
Nice bike, hope you spend many miles enjoying it. I know what you mean about maneuverability, I have issues in the garage and driveway with my Road Glide. Here is a post from a few years ago.
The pre-'18 'wings are going for good prices right now, with the advent of the ground-up redesigned '18 bikes. '17 and earlier is still an amazing piece of machinery, but people want the latest and greatest so tons of folks are trading / selling in order to get a brand new one.
We have a brand new '17 here, blue and black, level I...for a tick over $20k.
We can't keep '18s in stock.
The F6B hasn't been built for years; it was a de-contented bike (fewer electronics, fewer farkles) with a higher price tag. Neat bike, but a marketing/budgeting mistake. If you want one, you can find them - there are dealers with collections of them laying around. The '18s, the names changed - "Gold Wing" is the old F6B with no topcase and fewer gadgets. "Gold Wing Tour" is the topcase model with all the farkles and electronics.
And it is a world changer.
I've ridden short distances on our demos, and WOW. What a machine. Again, the '17 and earlier are amazing bikes...but the '18s are light years ahead of...well...just about anything out there. Anyone with even a passing curiosity about these bikes...go ride one. Just for educational purposes. Seriously. Lots of dealers have demos - we have two that we are not allowed to sell (one foot-shift, one DCT automatic), and they are here to RIDE. It's a factory program so chances are your local dealer also has demo bikes. Go do a couple miles on one - you'll be impressed.
I looked at the 18's and agree with Ratbuell, very impressive. But I carry a lot of junk with me. Typical trip to work has me carrying a lunch bag, my dress shoes for the office, phone, sun glasses and such. I like the storage capacity. Also, the price tag on the 18's was kind of scary. The cost of my used 17 was much more manageable. I'm happy with my choice.
