Surprised I'm the first to post today on this most solemn of holidays...
Memorial Day. Take a moment to remember.
Sunny's great uncle John Swackhamer never made it home from France in 1918. He was KIA on 8 October. His remains are interred in France in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery along with more than 14,000 of his brothers-in-arms. He was killed in battle in the last month of the "War to End All Wars" in the battle of Meuse-Argonne in which the largely untrained American Army was thrown against the Germans in what saw the highest loss of life by the US Army in a single day in ANY action before or since.
Though all the men in my family have served, WW1, 2, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq...none have been killed in action. With the exception of Iraq, it makes perfect sense: I wouldn’t be here if they had.
+1, +1000. My dearly passed Dad was Air Force Korea. Never talked about it, as many choose not to or just can't.
Have a great Memorial Day all, it's not just about grilling out and partying, but that's all good and well too. I just got my new/used grill going- found it at my local Habitat ReStore for $15!!! Built SOLID, a "Charmglow Classic" gas grill, never before used with gas, only charcoal for whatever reason... gonna be working up some burgers, grilled veggies, pasta salad, etc this evening!
Back to work tomorrow evening, and although it's a day late, I'll be wearing a hand-tied bowtie with the American flag pattern.
Jason Isbell's "Decoration Day" is playing on WDVX as I type this... WHAT a great song, look it up and listen if you've not heard it. A little moist now...
