I'll be traveling to the North Bay area next week for work and plan on riding hwy 36. I'm not very familiar with the area and other than the "Serpent to the Sea" section of 36, don't know what special areas to look for. Anyone familiar with the area want to recommend any spots that I should make sure to see while I'm up there? I'll be on a Uly but want to stick to pavement. I'll have about a day and a half to play with between when I leave Philo and when I need to be back near San Jose.

You can’t go wrong on 101 through the redwoods. Gorgeous. |

Scenic is a good app that lets you choose a "curvy" option between points. Its all very beautiful up there, stay off the highway |

..riding through Philo(Philo Beddo...Clint Eastwood's character name in the movie"Every Which Way But Loose) and towards the coast is a real pretty and twisty road....expecially when you get down towards the coast side...been a long time since going that way....remember there's those sad and unfortunate fires near there now.....just a heads up.LT |

Going to be a smokey ride. There are several out of control fires in the Napa, Clearlake area and the wind is pushing the smoke north right now. It is gorgeous in that area. 36 is a great ride. |

101 and 37 were closed this Monday in the San Francisco Bay Area due to fires farther north causing carmaggedon, but was open the next day, so by the time you get there it may all be black but open at the very least. http://www.fire.ca.gov/general/firemaps |

While the northern CA coast is pretty with its craggy coastline and all, I think of it all as undifferentiated hippie/redneck beach towns, no real must see things there. Ferndale is cute in a victorian architecture way if you're into that. I have not yet made it to Phillips box factory, which is East of Red Bluff, not west, but the youtube video seems to posess some awesomeness about it. Open to the public by appointment only. 29334 Bullskin ridge rd. Oak Run, California "The Phillips Brothers all Steam Powered Box Factory, founded in 1897, is family owned and operated and listed in the National Register of Historic places. This mill is believed to be the last fully operational all steam powered mill in America." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mKSKZau9qs http://www.phillipsbrothersmill.com/3/contactus.ht m |
