I figure this monster is worthy of discussion. Who's in Florida/coastal GA?

Eastern NC here. Everywhere is sold out of water and ramen. Folks are prepping more this year than they did last year for matthew.

It's amazing that 180 mph winds can move at 17 mph. Every time I check the radar i think, "this must be yesterday's map".
And every time I check the map it's projected further west. At this rate it's going to end up in Oregon.

Windy.com seems to show it petering out over GA/AL on tuesday.

After being told every storm season for the past decade and a half or so that we're going to get wiped out, I remain a bit skeptical.

My wife frets over it. She'll be in GA with the kid. I'll start to worry when the roof blows off and/or the house is under water.

Man, if that thing's still CAT 5 when it hits the southern tip of Florida, you better be elsewhere or get right with God ahead of time.

Hugo was a CAT 3 here in SC and the devastation was unbelievable. A CAT 5 will be like Armageddon.

Eastern NC here.

Same here. I needed a hamburger bun tonight so I stopped to get a package and buns were all they had. NO other bread whatsoever!

I was smart - I bought beer last night!

Not a native to this area but, from the handful of hurricanes that I've rode out, I'd have to echo Hugh's thoughts about it being a disaster if it makes landfall as a CAT 5.

All the best to those closer to what will ultimately be the track!

Mom's just outside Jacksonville, in St Augustine. She grew up in Miami and her basic feelings about hurricanes in general is "meh". The one that hit FL most recently (I want to say earlier this year?), she and her neighbors had a party. No admittance without wine.

She's already bugged out of FL for this one.

Something about the phrase "bigger than ANY STORM ON RECORD" got her, and other family (West Palm, Ocala, Daytona, Gainesville), to pay attention and GET THE HELL OUT.

Prayers out to those in the area. GET OUT. Your house can be rebuilt - that's what insurance is for. Besides...what the hell are you going to do if you're there...and it DOES start to damage your stuff? Watch? Go where it's safe.

Tell them to put the important papers in the fridge and duct tape it shut. Then leave the state.

I got this from a thread on ADVrider:

quote:

Based on experience, we recommend that you follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:

STEP 1. Buy enough food, beer, and bottled water to last your family for at least three days.

STEP 2. Put these supplies into your car.

STEP 3. Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween.

Not native to the east coast either. I've been in 2 typhoons in SE Asia, the coasts and islands got hammered but by the time they made it a hundred or so miles inland to where I was, it was just strong wind and rain...

I'd love to see a hurricane/typhoon in person... and at the same time, I hope I never see one in person.

My wife and kids are all natives of the PNW. Living here in NC now, they freak out every time it storms and thunders (nothing like the PNW grey drizzle they're used to). I do love a good storm. A hurricane, on the other hand...

Got an aunt and my GF's daughter and fiancée in the Tampa Bay area. Praying that it heads up along the east coast, but my GF's fiancée's parents are up there. Her daughter stated that they have a plan, are prepared, and would decide Friday whether to evacuate. Of course it's too late by now.

Gonna be a mess. We're expecting the remnants of the storm to hit TN early next week. We wish they were here with us.

Mom has a small fire safe. She also plays tennis regularly (at 80 years old!). I made her call a couple of the tennis pros to move the safe to the upstairs closet before she left.

I'm monitoring the 2 horses . . . it sounds like all is as good as can be but I'm nervous. One of the barn workers took their own horse and left in the middle of the night.

I'm getting the word from the staff that all the stores are cleaned out, there is no fuel and they have no access to ice.

Flagler Beach. Finishing boarding up the house and getting the generator ready. Going to be a hairy one

Not a good sign, me thinks.

All y'all that are riding the storm out, best of luck!
I've only seen a few tornadoes, and they're scary enough for me.
Can't wrap my head around a 700 mile wide storm.
I helped with the clean up after Andrew, so I've seen some aftermath.
Y'all take care!

Ummm, yeppers I bet. Been hearing some crappy stories about trying to outrun this thing- if you'd not left by early in the week, you aint going anywhere. Heard of someone trying to get from Ft. Lauderdale to Orlando, normally a 2.5 hour drive, failed and turned back after wasting 12+ hours.

My daughter and her family just went through Irma, in my old home the BVI, a direct hit.
If you're in the track of Irma, and are not worried or paying attention, you're an idiot.
I've been through a fair number of hurricanes, and never seen this kind of devastation.

The latest:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/weather.com/amp/storm s/hurricane/news/hurricane-irma-florida-georgia-so uth-carolina-north-carolina-forecast-path.html

In my parts power outages and flooding will be the main concerns, as usual.

I'm still hoping it goes somewhere else. Nowhere to go anyway. The weekend is going to suck.

The highways seem to be keeping it sporting. Flow at a pace just faster than the storm and their fine. lol

One occasion where FL needs filtering/lane splitting. I'd be doing it but I have a bed ridden old person to watch.

I've lived in Florida all my life. There was a storm called "Donna" in 1960. I was six years old. When it was over, the entire neighborhood was a wasteland. The major north/south highway US 27 was under 4 feet of water. The only road in and out of my neighborhood was flooded. Gov called a state of emergency. Couldn't go anywhere, no power. House was blown down. Slept in a makeshift lean-to on the bare slab. National Guard came by every two days with food and water, and evacuated any sick.

Took 3 weeks to get power back. Dad found a 14 foot trailer from somewhere, and we lived in that for a year while we rebuilt.

Forecasters says it looks like Irma is on an identical route. This time I am on high ground, and the building is designed for Cat 5 winds, and in the center of a large dense neighborhood, so I'm not worried much about my safety. Hopefully the neighbor's tree plays nice and doesn't crash thru my carport.

The last major storm we had was 12 years or so ago. Charlie tore us up pretty good then, followed by two more storms in less than two weeks. The worst is going without normal power. My generator doesn't have the output to run everything, but I have enough to be not TOO uncomfortable.

After this, I am going to install a permanently mounted 25 KW natural gas genset. Getting too old to go dragging heavy stuff around anymore.

The generator is prepped, have plenty of food, water, medicine, supplies. I have a 400 amp/hour battery/inverter setup as a secondary, and another 120 amp/hour USB power supply to keep my cell phone and tablet running. Plus a plethora of various battery powered LED lights and two bricks of batteries.Going to do a full on shakedown test tomorrow morning, and pick up and store the various things around the yard.

Yes, it could be bad, but at least I'm mid state. Hopefully it will be wound down a notch or two by the time it gets here. The biggest danger inland is from embedded tornadoes. With those you just have to hope for good luck.

I was on Maui when hurricane Iniki hit Hawaii as a cat 4. Pretty impressive. I snagged a ride in a helicopter the next day thanks to a friend. Amazing seeing the trees that were down in the rain forest. There was a sailboat washed up on the shore in front of our condo. The biggest piece I saw was the bow section. It was less than 3 feet long. Flew out to Oahu later that day to catch a flight back to the mainland and got to see some the damage there. They got hit quite a bit harder.

Stay safe folks!
