Correct me if my take on this is wrong, please. I am thinking that Michael has a racist agenda and wants to set up black only business networks? I hope I am wrong because the thought just makes me want to kick him in the privates. | ||

Can you imagine the outrage if the article read like this. I wonder if a person of "non-color" would be excluded from their little event. Students across the University will hold the first-ever commencement ceremony for WHITE students on May 23 in an effort to bring WHITE students across schools together and acknowledge challenges that students of color may face at Harvard. Organized by WHITE students across Harvard’s graduate schools, the event will feature speeches from students, alumni, and administrators. It will also honor alumni Whitey McWhite and Imbetter Jones with the WHITE Legacy Award for their contributions to WHITE student life. McWhite and Jones graduated from the Law School and Graduate School of Education, respectively, in 2016. The event, called WHITE Commencement 2017, has more than 170 student and 530 guest sign-ups so far, according to the Boston Globe. Michael McLoven, president of the Harvard WHITE Graduate Student Alliance, began organizing the event after finishing his first year at the Kennedy School, where he noticed an absence of programming to connect WHITE graduates across disciplines. McLoven completed his bachelor’s degree at Stanford from 2010, where he noted a “long tradition” of similar graduation ceremonies for WHITE alumni. “I think there’s so many good opportunities to build networks, to build fellowship, to build community,” McLoven said. “This is an opportunity to hear stories that are often not told.” Rober Sowhite, president of the Harvard WHITE Law Students Association, said the event looks to help WHITE students “claim our visibility” at the University, an institution that has historically been majority white. “We chose WHITE Commencement as not only a commemoration of all the different dynamics that go into being a WHITE person at Harvard University, but also a celebration of what an accomplishment it is to not only come out on the other side,” SoWhite said. Four students, who will all graduate later this month, were selected to speak at the event and will highlight various parts of the WHITE student experience at Harvard, according to McLoven and CJ Peckerwood, a student at the Graduate School of Education. Peckerwood said her own speech will discuss “what it means to walk across the stage and symbolically bringing my family, my community.” The planned ceremony comes as Harvard’s student body becomes increasingly diverse and the University attempts to grapple with its historical ties to OWNING SLAVES. Organizers of the event said this history often complicated their experiences at Harvard. “I will be frank and say that of course there have been times where I’ve felt isolated,” Peckerwood said. “But that doesn’t mean that my experience at Harvard is something I don’t want to remember and cherish for the rest of my life.” | ||

Oh, I know the guy is completely serious. It is really very sad. If I wanted to be "included" the last thing I would do is exclude myself...but I am not part of their "club" A quote from a member here is "Get in where you fit in" I think the key is trying to fit in. | ||

Therein lies the problem, IMO. I really don't give a rat's ass if I do or don't fit in with certain crowds or groups. I am me. Period. Like it? Cool. Hate it? OK, no sweat. Either way, I don't force my views on anyone else and expect the same in return. This whole "fit - misfit - offended - angry" bullshit is the root of the problem today. Of course, with no individual thought...no encouragement to better oneself...participation trophies just for showing up...I can see why people don't know or care who THEY are, only who they hang out with and "fit in" with. Shame, really... | ||

Interesting that the SO and I had a good chat last Friday at dinner about the new pupils coming into her high school. Mind you she teaches at one of the top 50 schools in the nation and one of the hardest schools in California. Always a top school. Her and several other teachers noticed that the current round of freshmen are completely unprepared for high school. Sure they can do the homework and pass tests, but there is a complete lack of critical thinking. As many as 20% of the students showed up on the first day with their moms (one dad) who expected to sit in class with them the first month (or more) to help them. Riots almost broke out when they were denied access to the classrooms. The district superintendent had to show up with the police to explain that High School does not work that way. She still has parents show up expecting to sit with their kids in the classroom when they are having issues. Another interesting things is the reaction when parents see the grades. In Middle school grades really didn't count for much, but in High School, they are your only path to graduation (with very few exceptions). When the parents call asking to have a grade changed because it might show bad on a college application, they are furious when they are told it is against the law for anyone but the grading teacher to adjust a grade and the grade is earned by the student, not handed out for posterity. Several teachers have had to file restraining orders against parents because they are being harassed on facebook, getting calls at home and in a couple of instances parents have shown up at their front door demanding the teacher change a B to an A. The other humerus trend is that everyone identifies as an individual, but, they all dress the same, listen to the same music, watch the same tv shows and do the same things. The Teachers are commenting how this freshmen year is just a bunch of robots from the same factory. Oh and they are all so fragile, the parents complain to the principle and board that a teacher raised their voice in class. We are doomed. | ||

I copied the above and sent it out to my joke mailing list. I also wrote the following below the photo: I send joke e-mails out to a list of people who are, in my opinion, radically Conservative and radically Liberal. (Most are somewhere in between) Anyhow; I find this funny. Whether you find it offensive, or find it hilarious, I strongly suggest that you should "Lighten up, Francis!" In either event, don't come after me. I'm hitting the road tomorrow for Cincinnati where I'm closing on a house on Friday morning. I'm tired of the Trump's a Saint and Trump's Satan in disguise, rebuttals I've been getting. If you really want my opinion; I think ALL of the News that's either broadcast or printed is extremely slanted; from Fox to CNN and every other network in between. I don't trust nor do I believe any of them. They all have an agenda, and I don't believe any of those agendas are for the benefit of the USA. Now, I'll climb down from my soap box. I have to pack my saddlebags. A short while later, I got this from Ted: At least he didn't use a .45 automatic revolver. When my dad was a (Boston) Globe editor, a reporter used that blooper in a story and was launched like a rocket. | ||
