Anyone familiar with Memphis?

May have accidentally wandered into a real estate deal and I'm curious about the neighborhood.

I could ask my sister and brother-in-law who have both lived there. He still has an office there and I'm sure he knows the place like the back of his hand.

No real idea, Court. I was born in Nashville, left for Knoxville in '90, might be able to halp ya in those areas. Middle to East TN is pretty cool, West TN is about as flat as Arkansas. I chose UTK over Memphis State to continue my edumakations, just because I'd be closer to the mountains here.

Memphis is a neat city with a LOT of good history, not just music...

Hope you find some guidance.

Elvis DID have a twin brother, IIRC who didn't survive infancy. That haunted Elvis all his life.

Alf, dammit, if you have any aspirations in life other than being a king-troll on BW, I'd be surprised. BAD joke, I mighta thought of that in junior-high.

Step up your game, get out, or lurk. I myself may not agree with everyone here, but I know how to be civil and conversant.

Jim, thank you for the offer. If you can, query your brother in law about the area, Madison Avenue, just South of Overton Park.

Kidlet, who is leaving his Ph.D. program at Harvard to take a job in Memphis, fell in love with the area. Describes it as "hip" . . "in transition" and "like Portland" . . with funky coffee shops, cool places to hang and Overton Park nearby for the dogs and running.

Photo os the house leave me unconvinced. Not ready to queer the deal but, since he hasn't a drop of DIY in him, a bit concerned about blowing into town and making an offer (which the owner has accepted based on the inspections) the first day.

I suspect if the deal gets made that any renovation work may require me to go to Memphis (not an all bad thing).

But . . any intel you can provide would be appreciated.

I would suggest that he spend a summer there before he decides to commit. It's not for everyone.

That was precisely my recommendation.

If you are not capable of changing your own oil or a flat tire (not necessary a "bad" thing . . just a candid observation) it may not be prudent to jump into home ownership the first day in a new town.

He landed a killer mid-six figure job and my bet is they are going to work his ass off. The "I have to wait for the Roto-Rooter" guy won't (pardon the pun) hold water. In addition, he wouldn't have a clue as to what a water heater looks like so he'd be lost in terms doing any of the, mostly unplanned, tasks demanded by home ownership.

I'm still voting for "rent for a year until you know the lay of the land".

We will see.

In my experience, those mid 6 figure jobs come with a lot of flexibility and work-home balance. They may work his ass off, but he should be able to lose part of his ass at home when he needs to. : )

Court,

My sister said, "From what I remember it's the zoo area old houses I guess trendy area near downtown. Hard to tell what's a good neighborhood in Memphis. The problem in Memphis is a block makes a lot of difference."

My brother-in-law surprisingly said he didn't know but will go there and check it out this week.

I'll post when he reports back.

Court,

Brother-in-law went there and said it looks like it is in the trendy part, down the street from some cool restaurants and a theater. "Midtown" he thinks.

My sister voiced a disclaimer: "He's no realestate expert!"

He didn't say run from it: )

I know that is not alot of info but I hope that helps. Seems to align with what your son told you.

Court,

If Overton Park is the place I'm thinking of, it's one of the nicest parks I've ever been to!

Just stay the HELL away from West Memphis.
That's one large river away. It's like a different country.

Most excellent ..... they've accepted offer ..... better half on an early morning flight to meet a crowd of inspectors and put final deal together.

Please thank your sister and brother-in-law for me .... their help is much appreciated.
