"Star Wars" was released May 25Th 1977 (thanks Wiki)
I find it amazing that it is still rolling on.

I was 10 years old at the time.
$1 would get you into the Saturday or Sunday matinee showing.

I'm getting old!

Hope to see it but I prefer my living room with a dog or two in my lap.

Heard/read a few favorable reviews- what I get so far is that the screenplay and storylines are much more interesting and less predictable than previous films.
Plus the cinematography is superb.

I'm a huge sci-fi buff, have been for most all my life. Too often at the movies, I'm walking out already re-writing the screenplay in my head... of course the Star Wars formula is pretty much set by now. Rented a Redbox DVD of "Independence Day II"... ended up seeing shades of "Starship Troopers" in that one, ack. At least Brent Spiner and the other good actors got a paycheck, and all I spent was $1.65ish.

I'm generally of the mind that I can wait until any movie hits Netflix/Amazon/Redbox... then I can watch it at home, with my fully stocked fridge, enjoying my superb hi-fi system's sound. Pause whenever, and NO FREAKING IDIOT'S CELL PHONE distracting me. Not to mention the theater's management neglecting to turn ON the heat, clean the screen, etc.

At home, for $1.65/$3/$5, tops!

Back when I was still selling bikes, several of us sales guys decided to go see the "IMAX" version of "The 300", with great anticipation. The screen looked like someone had wiped their biggest booger on it, and the sound was atrocious. At least I smuggled in my snacks and drinks, can't hardly do that anymore either. Now, a REAL, 1st generation IMAX experience is well worth spending the $$$... in Fort Worth's modern art museum they had one years ago. Watched a film simply called "The Four Seasons"... absolutely beautiful, spellbinding even.
William Shatner narrated, with Vivaldi's score throughout- most of the filming was done with cables and helicopters.

Sorry, had to rant a little. ; ) I AM looking forward to seeing "Arrival" at the first chance I get, here at the house, on my own sofa- in my 'jammies, with my honey and two dawgies,
and a cold beer in hand...

"I'm a huge sci-fi buff"

Star Wars is fantasy. : )

Sci fi is about how technology shapes or influences society. Most "sci fi" out there, aren't; they're just adventures in space.

I have no interest in seeing it. Once I saw the Death Star on the poster I lost all interest. I'm like we beat that thing to death in like 20 movies now, even the last one was the exact same thing, just a planet sized instead of moon sized Death Star.

Probably why I find Eps 1-3 to be the best of the series, because they actually had original content in them, not just a wizard with a breathing problem.

Hoot- yeah, I knew someone would make the distinction. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing "Arrival"... might even get the book it's based upon.

Spaceballs II? C'mon, some movies CAN'T be improved, man! No Barf, no movie. ; ) I'm aware that Mel Brooks' entire career, from his first TV appearance, is available in a box set...
might be a selfie-gift sometime.

My neighbor had a yard sale a few months ago, and I looked over her DVD's for sale... lo and behold, a pristine copy of Spaceballs!

Happy day!

I too rather wait and watch it at home with a couple dogs on my lap. 60", sound bar, remote and the furkids, make for a much better experience for me than a theater full of people.

I do not care what is said about Starwars, I have enjoyed them all, of course some better than others.

It shattered the way movie making was done in making models have the look and "feel" of realistic visions as never before. When that technology came out it was big news.

He he he.....I was nineteen years old. Within a two week period I watched it seven different times.....he he he.....with seven different girls ! Ahhhh good times!

Guess I might have loved that first one for many reasons.

The artistry of old-school cinema is my fave, but I want to be impressed by more modern techniques.

Science fiction/fantasy? I'm in!

Saw it in a 100+ year old theater.. Thumbs up.

Positive review. Minor nitpick. Which I'll skip...cause....spoilers.

I only go to the theater for special effects movies. Comic book films. Westerns.

If it's just as good on a 13" screen, like "Fried Green Tomatoes" ( funny film, no explosions, no vistas ) then I wait.

But I DO go to the little family theaters. Labors of love, popcorn with butter, even real cheese popcorn. Gotta keep them going.

Brad, you must have crap thaters near you, because down here we have really great ones.

Gone are the days of sticky floors and filthy screens, such as you have suggested.

Now we have oversized reclining lounge chairs with huge drink holders and sound systems that make a Pink Floyd concert seem like a grade school auditorium.

This movie now ranks in my mind as one of my favorites for being purely enjoyable to watch. I have now seen all 8 of them on opening nights or at pre-screening events, and regret not a single penny spent.

Most importantly, to me at least, NO MORE F@@KING MUPPETS.

Two movies in a row now, with no stupid kiddie characters. The future is bright once again.

The big thing in Rogue One is the use of actual sets.

Sure there's some green screen, no one has the budget to actually build an Imperial tower the size of a Dubai mega ego scraper, but huge real sets give the actors something to inhabit. By really having a marketplace instead of three booths and a green screen the acting is just better. Real sight lines and more to react to instead of "look over there at the Styrofoam ball! That's where the monster's head is!". Makes for a better movie in many ways.

Decent acting.

As to the Death Star? This is a fill in story between episode 3-4. So the Death Star is appropriate. ... and if you haven't avoided all the media hype, a plot item.

Episode seven was not my favorite. Nor were 1-3. I did catch the Original opening day and multiple times after so I have understanding of the hardcore fans.

In "X-Men Apocalypse" set when episode six came out there's a bit of prophetic dialogue. Walking out of "Return of the Jedi" Jubilee comments that "Empire" had the best narrative. Cyclops comments that without the Original there'd be no sequels. Then Jean Grey says "......the third one's always the worst".

Funny because "Apocalypse" was the third in it's trilogy, & was critically hammered. ( actually a pretty good film but the poor villain played by a good actor had face immobilizing layers of make up and was stuck with shouty super villain rants as dialog. )

That is a problem with a comic book movie....... or Star Wars. No one really cares for the bad guy's motivation.
"Oh, his childhood trauma has led to his plan to unleash killer virus to annihilate mankind..... poor thing"

Screw that! What part of annihilate don't you get?

Unlike modern international politics in movies they jump over the sympathy bit and go to the punching.

Matthew- maybe that's the case. I remember a distinct difference between the theaters in Tampa FL vs the ones in TN... Florida's somehow always sounded better. When I look at a giant L/R bank of kick-aiss speakers, and I KNOW that the only sound is coming from the crappy little front speakers, yeah. It's hard to beat MY "theater", at home. And, when I spend upwards of $50 just to have some a$$hats ruin it, meh.

So, was X-Men Apocalypse OK then? Might be my next Redbox buy...

+1, little family theaters. We still have a drive-in nearby- they're worried that a proposed Wallyworld and its lights will ruin it. Will try to head there ASAP in the spring...

Brad there are plenty of great movie theaters in Knoxville area. But they all have multiple movie rooms, with some having their best surround sound and better projection units being used for only the good live action first run movies in the prime $ evening hours. If you hit them in the day time for the econo runs you get their cheaper second run theaters. Haven't seen a gummy bear on a screen since I lived in Tampa area.

We used to take the kids(we have four total) to a dollar theater in Tampa that had a variety of gummy crap stuck on the screen. We found it best to wear rubber gloves and never lean back to touch your hair on the seats for the sticky guck was usually an unknown. They sometimes had kids birthday parties while running movies in the afternoons. First and only place I personally have seen a huge black man stand up and threaten to kill a couple of teenagers playing on their cell phones. I so do miss Tampa.

Try the "new" one at Governors Crossing in Sevierville. Leather power reclining seats and some of the best sound and projection systems around.....$2.00 extra, but worth the fee for a new big first run movie IMHO. I have only gone there a couple of times a year for what I am sure will be an epic big action movie. Otherwise I also stay home and wait for the movie to come out on the cheap.

I liked X-Men Apocalypse. It didn't get great reviews from some, but except for the complaint above, worth the time. Note this is the third in a trilogy starting with X-Men First Class, then X-Men Days Of Future Past. Which pulled a major reset of the X-Men universe, basically erasing X-Men 3. ( Thank goodness )

Also "Logan" is on the way, the third in the Wolverine trilogy, and Hugh Jackman's last shot at the roll.

I saw Rogue One. The odds are pretty good that if you’re reading this, you’ve already decided whether or not to see it, and if you haven’t yet seen it you’d rather I not spoil anything. I’ll make this quick:

It is a fine film beyond simply being a Star Wars film. I think it’s a better movie than The Force Awakens, and it does an outstanding job of setting up the original trilogy. It clears the Threshold of Awesome, and if you’re a Star Wars fan, I suspect you’ll be quite pleased with it.

That’s it. Enjoy the movie!
