...new to me, anyway. This little honey followed me home today. 2001 Kawasaki KLR650, with a few add-ons already included. I acquired this gem in the rough for the low, low price of ZERO dollars. After some negotiation, I even got the previous owner to help me push it up my driveway. (dead battery)
I must say, I drive one hell of a bargain. |

Do you work on commission? I saw a nice CityX that I want for $3,500. If I could get him to knock $3,500 off the price that would be worth a good percentage. |

Holy crap. Do me a favor and weigh the pile of crap you unbolt from that. Look at all that stuff! I never saw a dual purpose with highway pegs! |

WTF, over?!?! Gotta be a backstory. I acquired a 16' tri-hull runabout similarly, but not FREE, dangit! You will be in touch with my friends Megan and Francois at Dual Sport Touring, I predict, in the near future. My first "real" motorcycle was an '81 TS125, bought new from the Hermitage TN dealer by my dad. Not too long ago I saw a TS250, same or almost the year, locally. I also lusted after the Yamaha DT bikes- they really started it all. DANG!!!! I'm jonesing for a D/S too, but something smaller, maybe even vintage, from back in my formative years. Kinda need a vintage 2-stroke, D/S if there's a God. Good catch!!! |

The perfect fire road bike! You can't sit on the porch at Two Wheels of Suches on the weekend without seeing a ten or twenty an hour. You will henceforth be known in certain circles as "Red KLR Matthew",possibly abbreviated as Red KLR Matt". |

Awesome! I've been waiting for a deal like that. What all does it need? It will probably take about $800 in parts and $4000 in labor to be worth $2000 again, so the price isn't actually crazy, but its the kind of bike that needs somebody who enjoys repairing things as a hobby to put it back on the street for themselves or somebody else. I'm doing the same thing with a KZ-400 street bike. Bought it for $350, I'll probably put $300 of parts into it, and $5000 in labor (I'm a slow fabricator) and I'd be surprised if I sell it for more than $1000. (I assume $100 per hour repair fees, which is what i could probably make pretty easily doing that kind of work well. It is really easy to put 40 or 50 hours into a really neglected and worn out bike. I may end up with twice that restoring my 2007 Uly with a bad crank). |

I don't know if it will stay red. I have several small milk crates to choose from. He couldn't get it to start, possibly owing to the fact that the battery barely had any water in it. Engine was low on oil, but not empty. What was in there looked pretty clean. So far I have filled up the battery with distilled water, got that charging. Siphoned out the old fuel, filled it with fresh ethanol free juice, topped off the oil, and we will see what happens when I supply actual voltage to the starter. The lights that were added are cheap style, and the wiring leading up to those is not pretty. With 33k miles on the clock, I am thinking fork oil change, cooling system flush and fill, carb kit, air filter, oil & filter, brake fluid... And some knobby tires. Might dump a grand into it, and have a great zombie apocalypse mule. |

Do a valve adjustment. If it is like the KLR-250, its easy. Locknuts on a threaded adjuster, but getting the valve cover to reseal is teadious. I don't understand how the Japanese can build such great machinery, yet have a decades long inability to build valve covers and gaskets that seal effectively. If the doohickey hasn't been removed, remove it. |

I saw some guys on one of the klr forums talking about the doohickey.., not sure what it is, exactly but I am aware of it being something that needs to be dealt with. |

So... These lights gotta go. These things are straight up Kmart automotive department crap. I won't even show you the jumble of wires leading up to them.

The lights and all their rat's nesting materials that somebody called wiring have been deleted. (deleted parts are rapidly filling up one of the aforementioned milk crates) I have determined that the existing battery sat far too long with no water in it, because it gets up to 12.7 volts on the charger, but when I hit the starter button the voltage drops to about 8.2 and stays there. So tomorrow, I'll be ordering a sealed battery to fill that hole. It turned over twice, and I didn't hear anything like a blender full of nickels so I'm probably ok to ride it as far as the local shop where I'll give them a list of things to do. As much as I'd like to do all the work myself, I just haven't the time to invest. I want to get it to an operational baseline, from which point going forward I'll do the maintenance. I've bookmarked the Doohickey page, and I'll be ordering that part tomorrow along with the battery. |
