Giving my child (and wife) food, a home and an education is enough for me to work my ass off.
I just had a conversation that evolved from several people talking to school official and parents. It became incredibly apparent to me that there is a clash of cultures going on in our local school. You have a culture of those that come from parents that have your ethics. Then you have a culture of those who have been relocated from the housing projects that are being closed down in Chicago. They are shutting down the projects, and moving the families out to the suburbs, all with good intentions. The problem is that there is a real clash going on when these cultures are suddenly forced together. As a school bus driver, I see the division all too clearly. I see exactly where the problem kids come from, and where the rest come from. It's not even a racial as you would likely think.
We really have been a nation with different cultures living separately, but in close proximity. This has lead to obvious problems, such as what we saw for weeks in the national new from Ferguson a while back. The solutions that are being imposed aren't going smoothly though. We really have become a nation which is sharply divided, yet largely mixed geographically. There are very strange parallels to the tribalism that is seen in the middle-east. Unlike the middle east where tribal differences have been geographically separated for who knows how long, we are pockets of tribes that trough modern travel and communication manage to keep the larger tribalism alive rather than assimilating into the surrounding area. It's really a pretty new phenomenon in human history as far as I know.
We do live in interesting times.
I guess the fix is in.
Hillary is known by virtually everybody to be completely dishonest. She is also known to be the establishment candidate for the DNC. Does anyone expect anything but dishonesty in how things are done? It's only through Hillary being such an incredibly poor candidate that this dishonesty in the party has become so incredibly obvious to anyone who would dare to look at what is happening. It might be time to drag out shotgun Joe if this gets much worse.
Hmmm, I thought Hitler and Mussolini were democratic socialist!?
Pretty sure I wouldn't vote for that.
We have the best Constitution in the world and we want to throw it away?
Yep, I think I'll vote for the guy that believes in our Constitution.
The military is the best proof that socialism doesn't work. They get paid, have housing, training and food all paid by the government. The only thing is, the government is the people! So we pay for protection, the military could not survive without us! We allow this because it's actually the job of the federal government to protect us. But the military in itself would implode just like socialism will. Without the reward of capitalism all inspirational ideas would be slowed to a crawl.
As the Iron Lady said, "Socialism is great till you run out of somebody else's money!"
The constitution requires that the federal government maintain an army and a navy. If you read it, you'll see. It specifically doesn't say the government must, should, or can (and therefore cannot) confiscate wealth for redistribution. Hint: paying soldiers is not welfare. You need to take a civics class Todd.
I pity the person who can read this volume of information and not learn something that will sway their opinion. Our country has a rich history of these sorts of discussions. It used to be done in pubs and other meeting places. Some incredibly wise people took advantage of those discussions to mold their opinions. Today's world isn't that different, except that it's much easier for those bright minds to share their wisdom.
I've had my mind changed by discussions on this forum. Never lost a friend that really was one to begin with. I try to hover over truth, wherever that ends up. If I'm not over it, I move. Thanks to bill whittle for that phrase.
Discussing politics is a game. You talk of your beliefs and they talk of theirs and then you use factual information to prove your point. Whoever starts calling the other one names out of frustration loses.
I have never judged my friends by their politics, I just accept the fact that their wrong!
Do you like our military? or Medicaid? or how about roads or police? Guess what, these are socialist programs.
Wrong, right, wrong, wrong.
Medicaid is indeed a socialist program. That's WHY it's a massive drain on state budgets and the Federal mandates are designed to lie to you about how you are paying for it. Twice. Three times in any New York County.
Police, the military, and even roads are proper government functions. Built into the Constitution, in fact. Although to be fair you could argue about roads.
I think roads are just about the only thing authorized by the interstate commerce clause.
...the antiquated idea that democratic socialism is the boogy man.
Antiquated? Nice vocabulary, but is THIS YEAR antique already? See Greece.
Sure, you have the failing Social Democracies of the Scandahoovian nations, and I will say they have done pretty darn good by their people. It's an artificial world they built that social net in, however. Now that the Obama Regime has apparently abandoned Europe, due to his anti-colonialist bias, ( one I partly share, to be honest ) they are either going to have to abandon the benefits or be absorbed into the New Roman Empire of Vladimir's.
Even if the New Rome doesn't take them by force, the Jihad invasion facilitated by Barry's Wars is breaking the system in Europe, just as illegal immigration is doing the Cloward-Piven assault on our own.
I suppose the 1980's is antique, ancient history, in your mind, or you never learned about the last century.
To add to Patrick's rebuttal: It's also intellectually challenged to try to justify mass federal socialism for America by pointing to a few relatively tiny nations. The law here simply forbids it. Within the confines of our Constitution, our States are free to adopt socialist policy as they like; see California, New York, and Massachusetts. That is how the founders intended this Union of States to work.
Also the canard that if I'm not for total dependence government programs I'm against traffic laws or sewage systems.
Black or White arguments seldom are accurate. There are some pretty dark aspects of Socialism/Communism/Fascism that anyone who actually knows a smidgen of history can point to.
Walls, minefields, attack dogs, entire nations as prison camps. You might notice that other than rich celebrities, no one goes to Cuba, much less makes a raft out of old inner tubes and their front porch to escape American Capitalism to go to Castro's worker's paradise. The other way around is quite popular.
China still has a quaint custom of shooting political prisoners, ( Christians, technocrats, etc. ) in the back of the head and then charging their family for the bullet. Nothing like getting a bill for your son's execution to rub your nose in your position in paradise.
Again, with the notable exception of curious students, and leftist nutcases, few people until the walls of the Soviet Union fell, went there on vacation.
I believe Bernie falls in that category, having honeymooned in the Soviet Union.... and "never came back" ( Lindsey Graham quote }
Th argument no politician wants to have is how socialist do we want to be?
Combine social programs with Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy, and you have immortal institutions like the Bunny Inspectors, who inspect non-agricultural rabbit use, with an iron fist and little chance at appeal. ( yes, an entire division of the government dedicated to making sure that magicians and hobbyists don't abuse their rabbits. I can't make this stuff up. )
