Dammit, summbitch, are you a writer/motojournalist now?!?! That "Moveable Feast" guy is an Aussie too, right?
Oh, I wish, but I don't write or ride well enough for that! I'm doing the same job I do now, project managing building automation projects. The projects are for national clients so lots of locations.

Jeep Renegade. You will take care of that Italian itch with it.
I need to find out about these, aren't they based on a Fiat 500 platform? Sounds weird, and tiny!
If I was buying a new Jeep it'd be a Wrangler Unlimited soft-top : D

All you need is a hitch and a bike rack for the porsche... and same deal with the foxbody.
I've seen a bike rack on a Miata, and a bike stuffed in the back of a Corvette, so anything's possible! This is going to be fun!

One of my fellow Vette owners has a receiver type trailer hitch on his 2004 Vette. He tows a modified(narrowed without ramps or straps) car dolly to our Autocross events with his race tires jack and tools.

Working out where to live in Los Angeles or Orange County

I can give you my 2 cents on locations in those areas; what is your housing budget?

Thanks Teeps : )
$1,500 month? Less would be nice. 2 car garage and no grass to mow ideally. Within cycling distance of mountain bike trails would be even better, but I figure it'll take me a while to work out where the best trails are.

If so where?

I know, I know, but that's the sort of money I'd pay here, so that's my starting point.

Teeps - I'll be setting up a home office. My boss is in Boston MA. No one else in LA yet, there's another guy in Sacramento.
Convenient to an airport like Burbank would be good.
Does that help?

Renegade is not 500 based. Drive train is US made 2.4 liter with 9 speed automatic. Mine has auto 4wd and a few computer tricks for terrain selection modes. Vehicle is light and crazy controllable in the snow. You hardly need skill.

So you won't be commuting to a fixed location, daily, that's good.

I'm not familiar with Burbank enough to vet that area.
I would start by looking on craig's list under SF Valley, find what you think will suit your needs.
Then get an address or cross street, I can ask my cousin that lives on that side of town if it's a safe place to live.

I think you will find that $1500/month for housing is going to present a challenge in SoCal anywhere near the city. I have a friend in the San Fernando Valley paying that much on a mortgage they got 10 years ago.

I have heard it is cheaper than the San Francisco Bay area where $1500/month _might_ get you a room in a house with others.

The platform is Fiat 500L. The turbo 1.4 and 6 speed manual are also of Italian decent.

They are all built in Italy.

DANG the cost of living suxx out there!

I'd be looking at some serious alternatives... maybe a houseboat? My best bud has lived on one for most of the past two decades... in many ways I get jealous of his set-up.

Of course I'm a Tennessee boy... life in Southern Appalachia is pretty good here. I for one don't take the TVA for granted ; )

My eldest son pays $1580 for a one bedroom apartment in Orange County.

My mortgage payment in that same area was $3300 per month, with $8500 per year in property taxes. Add insurance to that, plus association fees, over $350 a month on top of the mortgage. That was for a 1365 square foot house that was built in the 70's.

Good luck finding anything with a 2 car garage for $1500, unless you want to live in the ghetto.

I think you guys are right, I may have to up my budget a little... But that's ok, and away from the city is good : )

Home office and no regular commute is a plus : D It's just me so an apartment is fine, parking/garage/somewhere to work on my mountain bikes could be a challenge.

When I stayed with Ozzie the first few trips he was in San Dimas, and it's that area which made a real impression on me - laid back and friendly, but everything available and close to the mountains.

I'll do some more research tonight, I'm thinking I'll look all along the base of the mountains from SF Valley to San Bernardino, kind of along the path of the 210. I know that's a pretty big area though.

The other area that got mentioned to me somewhere along the way was Long Beach... There's some apartments there under $1500, but not sure what the area is really like.

Hehe, met my wife when I was living in Bong Leach. When I was there few places were safe after dark. Things were changing as neighborhoods were being taken over by working professionals. Close to the beach is nice though, near Belmont Shore, and 2nd Street is close for some after hours fun.

The cost of living may be higher, but in most cases so are the wages. In the SF bay area, I make twice as much as a similar job in other places in the country. Traffic takes a toll though and that is another reason I m happy you can ride almost all year.

True. That's why Nissan & Toyota moved to other states. Very few in the rank & file can afford to take a job that reports to an office in so cal.
Honda, I suspect is not far behind. Though they have denied a move for over 25 years I worked there.

Lived here all my life; the house I live in now. I could not afford to buy at today's prices. Lucky I've been embedded for over 20 years...

A little research and a little thinking today re housing... Like moving to any new city I'm going to have to do more research when I get there, and at least I'm lucky that I can stay with friends for a little while... 'Til they get sick of me!!!

I have had a bit of a think about my priorities, and it made me realise a few things... I'm going to be working from home a lot so I want somewhere comfortable enough, where I can set up an office and not be living in the same room 24/7. I would really like a double garage. Those two factors really rule out units/apartments.
The other thing is I really want to keep up my mountain biking... Actually I'd like to ride more than I do now so being close to trails is actually very important to me.
Blue, black and double black is good:
http://www.mtbproject.com/directory/8007306/los-an geles
And where there's good mountain bike trails there's usually good roads too : D

So yes, $1,500 is a little light. But having a look at a little higher $$$ I found some double garage condos and townhomes(I think that's what I'd call a townhouse) in the following areas: Azusa, Glendora, San Dimas, Pomona, Ontario. Any thoughts on these areas?

Teeps - I couldn't find anything in SF Valley that appealed, but I'm being more specific now.

Graham:

For what it's worth . . . . I am kind of looking at the same scenario. My place now, on the edge of NYC, is cheap, below your $1,500 mark, has lots of room and a large double garage.

This is VERY unusual for the NYC area where a studio apartment can go for $3,000 and parking adds another $600 a month.

I've kept my place, although I am likely only there 2 or 3 nights a month due to work, just because it's inexpensive.

I'm now looking for something in Connecticut and am looking for 3-5 acres, a barn is good enough condition that it can be restored to house vehicles, art and guitars, and it has to be close to hiking (I've been spending a good deal of time trekking the Appalachian tTrail)

Connecticut is presently under consideration because I've had 2 interesting offers for about 5 years of helicopter transmission work as they prepare to start a $3B transmission construction program.

But . . . I'm not leaping yet as there are also major projects, I've been contacted about in Boseman, MT . . San Fran and Austin, TX. For that eventuality . . . . I'm looking to go the Airstream route.

California really complicates things. Housing is expensive, not to NYC levels, but darn close and living there (I spent a couple years in Manhattan Beach and Marina del Rey) can be problematic since everything is scattered. In NYC you walk everywhere or take a subway . . . in CA you drive everywhere.

Depending on where you are working and where you "need" to be . . . . I'd keep your options open. There are some amazing places all over the USA.

I am in Portland, OR right now and if I had to choose a city . . . this would be in the top 3. Although . . . Portland, which has always been a cheap and amazing place to live, is changing quickly as CA real estate folks snap up bungalows here in the Mt. Tabor area and build 130 unit, $350,000 condos.

The upside to all of this . . is that I know you well enough to know that wherever you end up you'll have an amazing time, an amazing story and enjoy yourself.

It's all about attitude.

Enjoy the journey!

That you have a place to stay, upon arrival, will make it a lot easier to find "the right place" for you.
Any of the above cities would be good. Generally the higher up the mountain the higher the rent.
The further east you go the lower the rent, least that's how it used to be.
Check the places out at night and the weekends too.

90804 has a few good spots, but 10th and Coronado is not one of them.

Coronado is ok when you get below 3rd street, but your rent will get a bit higher
