The colors were real purdy from the Stone Pile to Suches yesterday and yes there were leaf watchers out in force.

Hog Island and River Ratz

There’s an old saying, “Man makes plans and God laughs”, That’s how things feel right now. Yesterday morning, I had everything sorted out for the next few days. I even wrote about it in my snippet. Then I looked at the weather and saw that it’s going to rain everywhere north of Florida for a couple of days. That caused me to change my plans pretty quickly.

I decided to stay in Central Florida for at least another day before I head north. So, I looked at the cheap campgrounds site and found a couple that were listed as being under $12.00/night. I got directions to the Crooked River Campground, and was making my way there (and I didn’t get lost!) when I went by a fairly busy place called River Ratz restaurant. there were a few bikes in the lot and quite a few cars, as well. It looked interesting, but I was on a mission. About a mile later, there was a big sign for Hog Island State Park. Since that was the other cheap campground on the map, I decided to check it out.

Now, I want to state for the record that a fat old fart riding about 650 pounds of street bike loaded with gear is not a good choice for riding down soft sand roads in central Florida. I had to work to keep the bike upright and moving forward. However, I made it into the campground, checked out the sites and decided I’d stay there for the night; but I didn’t set up camp. I rode back out to the main road and turned back the way I came and went to River Ratz to get lunch/dinner. They had a rock/blues band playing that were pretty good and I took the waitress’ suggestion and got the Special, a Taco Salad. The food was good and reasonably priced, and I enjoyed listening to the band. I almost bought one of their T-shirts. On the back it says I don’t give a Ratz and there’s a cartoon drawing of a rat from behind. If it had a pocket, I definitely would have spent the money. After I finished eating, I stopped at a convenience store close by and got some Gatorade to drink at the campground, then I went back to Hog Island. I pulled into the first open site and set up my tent. For ten bucks, it was the best deal I’ve seen in a while; especially when you consider that it’s a State Park.

I was sweating profusely, just setting up the tent. It wasn’t that hot, less than 90º F, but the humidity was up and I really felt it. By the time I had the tent set up, I just sat at the picnic table and hoped for a breeze. My T-shirt was soaked from sweat. Once I cooled down a little, I went and took a shower and put on clean and dry clothes. Then I retired to my tent for the evening. The Mosquitoes were plentiful, and I didn’t want to smear repellent on my arms and neck after having just taken a shower.

I think I might just see if I can find a cheap set of rain pants and start heading north today. While I still haven’t seen Stone Mountain or the Wheels Through Time Museum, cold and wet with lots of leaves on the roads just doesn’t seem like a good combination. I might just have to put them on next summer’s list.

I think I’ll look for a Walmart and see what I can come up with.

Well Crusty, if you come back up East Tennessee way I'll keep a light on for ya, the bed made, and the hot water ready for a shower.

My family and I toured the Alabama Battle Ship in 1998, the sub was crashed at the time from a storm. The dock was broken and the sub was kind of listing to one side pushed part way on shore. I was sorta bummed by that, I always wanted to tour a sub. It sure looks small sitting beside that big ass ship!

Cheap Oil and Cheap Rain Pants

I rode up through the center of Florida mainly on US Rt. 301. One of the things that’s been on my mind is how many miles were on the oil since I changed it. Another thing that was on my mind was that I didn’t have rain pants anymore, and I was riding north into a pretty large area of rain.

Now, I get my SS deposit on the fourth Wednesday of the month. However, some months have five Wednesdays between checks and this is a five week month, so I have to be a bit more attentive about how much I spend so I don’t run out of money. The cash reserves are getting pretty low, so I opted to spend as little as possible, yet still accomplish my goals. I refuse to touch the money that’s set aside for airfare to Australia. So, I bought three quarts of Wallyworld Special 20w-50, a pair of Coleman rain pants and a Rubbermaid disposable plastic tub with a lid for four bucks. With the cold Pepsi I grabbed in the check out line, I spent a total of $35.25.
I drained the oil out of my bike into the Rubbermaid container out in the parking lot and filled the oil tank with the Superslo oil. I put the rain pants in my saddlebag, then took the used oil (in the tub with the lid on) into the auto shop and it went into their used oil container, and the dirty tub went into the recycle bin. All in all, It took me an hour to buy everything and get the oil changed. I didn’t change the filter, as it would have made a mess. I’ll be doing another oil change as soon as I get to Taxachusetts, so I think everything will be fine. I think even Wallyworld Superslo oil will work just fine for a thousand miles or so.

So; this years rambling around the USA is drawing to a close. While I’m not done traveling yet, winter is fast approaching and it’s almost time for me to head for the Southern Hemisphere. There are some things I want to do next summer; go back to Glacier National Park and ride the entire length of the Going-To-The-Sun Road (I also want to get a lapel pin), ride the entire length of the Natchez Trace Parkway, see Stone Mountain, visit the Wheels Through Time Museum and ride the Tail of the Dragon.
I also want to stay at Two Wheels of Suches again and go to the 1/2 Mile race in Delmar, Delaware. For the race, I’m going to try to get a bunch of friends to join me. It’s a Good Time and the Pit Beef sandwiches are Amazing. Plus, they let you camp for free at the track. I’ll probably hit the four Contiguous States that I missed this year (California, Nevada, Oregon and Michigan) and I’ll most likely ride through Monument Valley again. Maybe, if I time it right, I’ll ride through Death Valley. That won’t be in July or August though. Maybe I’ll make a run up US Rt. 89 and get a burger at the Marysvale Cafe in Utah. I don’t believe I’ve ever eaten a better burger anywhere. Besides, if I do, I’ll be able to look at the green earth again. (Green dirt still fascinates me!) And maybe I’ll head North and ride to the Arctic Circle. That’s still on my Bucket List.

That’s all for next year. For now, my modified plan is to get to Sweatman’s BBQ, then head up to Fayetteville, NC to my Sister and Brother-in-Law’s house for a few days. Then, I’ll head for DC and the Australian Consulate to get my Visa. After that, I’ll aim for New England and get ready for a long flight after my Cystoscopy. There’s a lot of loose ends that have to be dealt with before I leave. Fortunately, I don’t think anything on that list is insurmountable.

One thing is certain; my life sure ain’t boring!

I continue to be amazed at the ground you have covered. I am more of the basecamp and ride out from there kind of guy. Sounds like you've successfully managed to do what you set out for in the first place. Keep up the good work but make sure to take time to smell the roses.

Rain Day

What a difference a day makes! Monday, I drove by a bank sign in Ocala. It was sunny and the sign read 12:06 PM and the temperature was 88º F. By noon yesterday, it was raining hard and I was wearing a sweatshirt and my electric jacket liner. I didn’t see a thermometer, but it was down in the 50s, and felt colder. The cheap rain pants worked well at keeping my legs dry, but water still found its way in through all the waterproof gear. While things didn’t exactly leak, enough water found its way to the clothing underneath and wicked its way all over. By the time I arrived at Steve and Grace’s house, I was pretty thoroughly soaked. I kept telling myself that it wasn’t that bad; I’ve ridden through heavier and colder rain. That may be true, but it still sucked. Oh, well…

I found my way to Holly Hill, SC and made my way to Sweatman’s BBQ. When I got there, the sign said they’re only open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. So I wasted an hour. That gave me something to grumble about as I made my way up I-95, alternating between being stuck behind Elephant Races and Road Hogs, and having open road with nobody around. I contemplated writing a Snippet about why I dislike Interstates and yet I do like them at the same time, while listening to a variety of different songs in my head.

When I got to South of the Border, I had to stop and buy some postcards. The postcards were a real bargain; 12 for a buck. I’ll be making them out today and mailing them ASAP.

Eventually, I made it to the right exit off 95 and rode to Ma and Dad’s graves, said a few words to them then rode to Steve and Grace’s. We had a wonderful hot meal of chicken and pastry, then kicked back and watched a movie. It’s going to be a laid back couple of days, then I’ll head for Washington and the Australian Consulate on Friday. The rain is supposed to quit by tomorrow, so I should have a dry ride.

For now, I’m going to get some laundry done and enjoy staying warm and barefoot while my boots dry out.

Probably cold and rainy up through the northern area, so you might want to plan to stay south until next week.

That said, my Harley blew out the rear brake line... Might be covered by third party warranty, but they didn't receive my paperwork so I don't exist to them yet. Sent them scans and they are working on it. Dealer can't get to it until Monday. I mention that because I wouldn't be able to ride it, therefor the weather might turn out to be warm and dry for the entire weekend.

I tried to tell you there are PLENTY of other great BBQ places in SC! See post one page back.

I know there are plenty of great BBQ joints all over the South. I was fixated on Sweatman's because it was recommended by a close friend.

It's tough to ride past a smoker on the side of the road and not stop and buy something to eat, even when I've just had lunch.

It seems that every time I stop at one BBQ joint down here, I find another that looks just as inviting or even better just down the road.

I think this is called a Quality Problem.

Back In The Saddle Again

I left Fayetteville this morning with the Australian Embassy as my goal. According to google, it’s 325 miles from Steve and Grace’s house, so I wanted to get an early start so I would arrive well before closing.

Now, my sister learned how to make meatballs like my Mother and Grandmother made. When she made Spaghetti and Meatballs last time I was there, I couldn’t stop eating them. They tasted like Mom’s meatballs, and I devoured more than I should have. I hadn’t had them in decades, and the memories that came flooding back with the first bite just added to the experience. Grace took note of my enjoyment, so she fixed them again for dinner last night. Once again, I ate more than I should have and loved every bite.

This morning, as I was getting ready to head out, Grace made three meatball sandwiches for me to take and eat on the road. The first sandwich didn’t make it out of Fayetteville. I got on I-95 and got off one exit north to fill the bike with gas. I ate the first sandwich while I was pumping gas. The second sandwich got inhaled in a rest area just below Washington and I managed to hold off eating the third until about 6:00. Boy; they were good. The really neat part is that I've got the recipe. I put it in a ziplock bag with my paper road maps. I can see me frying a bunch of meatballs up, then making a sauce with them. I bet Ron and Melia will enjoy eating them on a warm summer evening in Queensland while there's a blizzard happening in the Northeast part of the US.

I had no trouble finding the Embassy of Australia and even had no trouble finding a parking space. I left my Leatherman tool in my saddlebag, and went into the Embassy through the Visitors door. A very polite guard informed me that the Embassy no longer processes Walk In visas. He gave me a card with a phone number to call during the week and explained that when I call, the process will be quick and easy and there will be helpful people to walk me through it. The then told me to enjoy my trip to Australia. I thanked him and went back to the Sportster. Since I was so close, I rode down by the White House. I could only get to about a block away, but I could see it plainly. It’s funny; I’ve been looking at it on TV and in the movies all my life, yet I was really impressed when I actually saw it in real life. I could see the Capitol in the near distance as I rode through the city. The dome was surrounded by staging; I assume it’s being worked on. I also inadvertently went by the Washington Monument. I was within a hundred yards of it. It’s pretty impressive, as well. and I rode past the Pentagon on my way out of town. It’s big. Very big.

I think that maybe next year, I’ll spend a couple of days in Washington. There are so many statues, and sculptures that I didn’t stop to check out (though I did notice the statue of Daniel Webster as I was sitting at a red light), and I’d love to visit the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. I have to say that Washington impressed me in a positive way. I really wasn't expecting that.

After I found my way back to I 395, I rode in bumper to bumper Rush Hour traffic for three hours as I headed North. Finally, both tired and cold, I found an overpriced cheap motel and got a room.

I’d like to pass right on through Massachusetts and head to Maine to visit with Megan and Rocky for a day or two, but when I called Megan, she didn’t answer her phone. I’ll try again in a little while.

Meantime, I’m going to kick back.

BTW, my busted brake line looks like it will buy you fair weather through the northeast, but the parts arrive on Tuesday so the last half of next week will probably be miserable.

3:25 AM

The time change has really screwed up my sleeping patterns. I was exhausted at 9:30 last night; now I’m wide awake at 3:30. I don’t want to make noise as Rocky has to work in the morning, so playing music or watching the idiot box is out. I might as well write a Snippet; though I have no Idea of what I’ll write about.

Saturday morning, I was in Aberdeen, Maryland. I honestly didn’t think I’d make it to Maine by that evening, but I was wrong. I had a little Luck in the traffic I was surrounded by. I came across Connecticut on the Merritt and Wilbur Cross Parkways following a Ferrari whose driver thought 80 to 85 was just the right speed. I stayed behind him until Hartford when he continued up I-91 while I took I-84. I was sitting in the truck stop at Ruby Rd. at 3:00 PM having a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee and calling Megan to tell her that I would, after all, be riding in in a few hours.

I don’t really enjoy riding the BosWash corridor on a motorcycle. It seems like one out of every five drivers is texting while three of the other four are talking on their phones. And they’re all doing it at 75 to 80 miles per hour. To add insult to injury, there are the endless exorbitant Tolls. It cost me $12.00 to travel less than 100 miles in Maryland. Then it cost me four bucks to ride about 20 miles in Delaware coupled with another four bucks to go over the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Then there’s the New Jersey Turnpike and the George Washington Parking Lot (Bridge) If I went that way, it would have added $29.85 to the $20.00 I’d already spent. Instead, I took the Turnpike to the Garden State Parkway then went over the Tappan Zee Bridge, Going that way “saved” me $14.60. After that, it was refreshing to ride the Mass Pike and only pay $1.10 to travel about thirty miles. I don’t see how people can afford to live in the Megalopolis if they’re earning less than 100K a year. New Jersey has pretty decent gas prices though; go figure.

Yesterday was a recovery day. Megan had to work, so after we all went to the Wholly Donut (GREAT donuts!} we dropped her off, then Rocky and I just spent a lazy day relaxing at the house, occasionally playing Doorman for the cats who let us know when they want to go out or come in.

I’m healing up from some burns I got on my neck from my Gerbings electric jacket liner. While I had the heat turned up to a comfortable level for my torso, I wasn’t wearing anything between the collar of the jacket and my neck. I felt the burning as I was riding, but it didn’t seem that bad. When I arrived here, I had a couple of fairly large blisters on the back of my neck. Today, I’m going to go buy a Turtleneck shirt. That should cure the problem.

That’s it for now. I’m going to go back to bed and try to get a little more sleep.

Its nice reading about your journey, and makes me want to do the same next summer (as a teacher I have about two months off during the summer).

Stay safe brother, keep us posted

Stupid Hurts

I left Megan and Rocky’s place yesterday morning; running late,as usual. I had planned to leave by 9:30, so I would be in Fitchburg before Noon, but it was almost 10:00 by the time I got rolling. So I figured I’d run about 8 or 9 MPH over the posted limit, and everything would be just fine. That probably would have worked O.K., but I kinda zoned out and my speed crept up until I noticed blue lights in my mirror.

I pulled over, and the State Trooper was not in a good mood. He had me at 85 on radar, and because I didn’t notice him behind me immediately and he had to follow me with his lights on for a couple of miles, he was ready to pile a whole mountain of sh*t on top of just the speeding. I apologized for being a space shot, and when he asked why I was going 85, I told him it was Stupidity on my part.

He calmed down, took my License and Registration and left me with a pretty blue certificate of merit suitable for framing, as well as a white copy that I need to mail in to the State of Maine along with a sizable check.

I have nobody to blame but myself. Twice, this summer, I’ve been stopped for speeding, and I was let go without a ticket. This time was the third, and since I didn’t learn from the first two times, maybe a little financial inducement will work. I hope so. I know that I was a lot more mindful of my speed after getting stopped and I was more aware of what was behind me.

Anyhow, today, I have a lot to do, starting with calling the Australian Consulate to try and get a visa. then there’s a bunch of other things that I have to get done, as well (including mailing in my fine). I’m going to be busy. I had a pretty nice Snippet about half written yesterday morning before the kids woke up; but getting stopped kind of ruined my mood and I didn’t feel like finishing it. Once I recover from the incident, I’ll probably revise and continue it.

“Don’t Forget Breathe; Very Important”

In the original Karate Kid movie, Mr. Miyagi tells Daniel-san the title line while training him to fight.
I’ve had to stop and tell myself the same thing a few times these past few days. Between dealing with Embassies, Consulates, Insurance companies, doctors, pharmacies and other Providers, as well as finding a cheap airline ticket, I’ve been running pretty much flat out. I have to make an effort to slow down and take care of the important and basic stuff.

However, things are falling into place. One by one, the details are getting sorted. I’ve got my visa (actually an ETA - Electronic Travel Authority), I have a three month supply of my critical drugs on its way, it looks like I’ll have to buy my blood monitoring test strips, but that’s doable (though expensive) and I’ve found an affordable ticket (though I haven’t bought it yet; I’m waiting for the money I transferred from my Internet savings account to appear in my checking account). Everything is coming together.

As if all the above isn’t enough, I bought a pair of cast wheels for my Sportster yesterday. It was too good a deal to pass up. I hate wire wheels. They tend to be heavier, require tubes and rim strips, and they are a royal bitch to fix if you get a flat while traveling. With cast wheels, I can run tubeless tires and if I pick up a nail, I can put a plug in the tire. Plus, cast wheels are a lot easier to clean. I’m going to transform my bike into a better Traveling mount. I want to find a 4 1/2 gallon fuel tank from a Custom, and I want to put hard bags on it. I also want to change the shocks and fork springs and make it handle better. The wheels are just the first step. Next year, I hope to be traveling on a true Tramp’s machine. I’ve got a Vision of what it should look and feel like, and I’m working toward it.

Anyhow; to get back to the subject, it’s the weekend. I have a couple of days where I can’t move forward on my travel plans, so I can relax a bit. Today, the local Library is having its annual Book Sale. I’m going over when it opens and hopefully, I’ll find some interesting books to read while flying halfway around the planet. Tomorrow is Meal Day. I had made plans to go to the Casserta Pizzeria in Providence with a friend, but if that falls through, I’ll go to Redbones and get some really good BBQ.
Either way, I’ll eat well.

It’s all coming together.

John, have you considered a Kindle? I picked one up a couple of years ago and find it's great for traveling. You can have a slew of books, movies, magazines and music all on one item that's the size of a paperback and will fit in a tankbag. You can even customize the print size and give up the reading glasses

Note: Movies and music really requires a Fire tablet, regular e-ink readers do not do movies. So what's the difference? Battery life! The e-ink need to be charged every week or more, the tablet will be every day.

My mom uses her old Kindle DX (larger display) about 5 hours a day and goes about three weeks between charging. For on the road books, I would go with an e-ink unless you want the other computer aspects with it. Then tablets are great, doesn't need to be a Fire, but any decent tablet.

The kindle app is nice because you could load up hundreds of books to take with you, that includes PDF versions of your service manual! You can do PDF on most of the newer e-ink devices, but I'm not sure how well they draw them because I haven't researched this in the past 3 years. Technology changes a lot in that time frame!

Baby, I Gots My Ups And Downs - Otis Elevator

I enjoy watching motorcycle racing. In about another hour or so, the final Moto GP race of the season will be broadcast on FS1. However, I won’t be able to watch it. It’s a bit of a disappointment, but it’s also part of the price I pay for living the lifestyle I’m living. There are quite a few folks who enjoy reading these snippets because they get a view of the interesting things that they miss by being settled and stable. I look at them and see the things that they have that I miss. Life is a series of compromises. We pick and choose which things we value and will pursue, and which we let pass. I don’t regret the choices I’ve made, but sometimes, I do miss some of the things I’ve given up. Like seeing if Valentino Rossi will win the Championship. (I hope he does)

There isn’t much I can do to further my plans to go to Australia today, so in a short while, I’m going to ride over to Fitchburg and meet up with Dondi. Then the two of us will take her car over to Kathryn’s and pick her up and drive down to Providence (Rhode Island) and get a pizza from Casserta’s. Casserta’s makes one of the tastiest pizzas I’ve ever eaten, and Kathryn’s never been there, so she’s in for a treat. It should be a fun afternoon with a good amount of stimulating conversation. I really enjoy a good Bull Session. Tomorrow should be a very productive day. I hope to buy the ticket for my flight, and also buy my blood testing strips. That will be the last of the major preparations. There are still a bunch of minor things to do, but that should take care of the major items.

All my plans are hinged on getting good results from my Cystoscopy. I’m running on the assumption that the cancer has not returned. If it has, then all bets are off. I don’t expect any negative results, though. I’ve been cancer free for about a year and a half. I heard from someone who had the same cancer, and he hadn’t had a recurrence in nearly twenty years. I won’t worry about it; I’ll just roll with the flow.

If a meal that’s between breakfast and lunch is called Brunch, then shouldn’t a meal that’s between lunch and dinner be called Linner? Or if it’s between dinner and supper, Dupper? At any rate, I’ll be eating Great pizza for Linner today.

John, If you're down my way and like minestrone soup, then I HIGHLY suggest stopping by Venus De Milo on RT6 in Swansea and buying a takeout bucket. I think it's ~9 bucks for a 1/2 gallon. Best minestrone in New England. Walk in and go to the bar on the right side of the building to pick it up. You will NOT be disappointed.

My wife goes to Casserta's all the time and loves it, she works for Coke Cola in Providence.

Green Eggs and Ham

Today, I went over to the shop. I wanted to pay off my tab and I also wanted to do an oil change. I also wanted to shoot the bull with everybody. So, after dealing with the test strip people and arranging to have enough to last until the spring expedited to me, I rode over to Malden.

When I got to the shop (GP Motorcycle Supply), Sandra informed me that a new belt and sprocket were on their way, paid for an anonymous donor. She wouldn’t tell me who, as she had promised to keep his (or her) name secret. All she said was that my benefactor was to be called Sam, and he (or she) wasn’t one of the shop regulars.

That means that I haven’t got a clue who it is, so I can’t thank you in person. I’m 99% sure it’s somebody who is reading this; I can’t figure out who you are though. I do realize that it’s a lot of money. I bought a new belt last summer, so I know how expensive they are; I haven’t priced a sprocket, but I suspect the cost isn’t trivial. At least as much as the belt and probably more.

So all I can do is accept the gift in the spirit in which it was given, and try to pay it forward when the opportunity arises.

Thank you, Sam. If it makes you feel any better, I’ll be driving myself nuts for a long while trying to figure out who you are. I do have my suspicions, but I don’t know how to prove them.

Local Buell/H-D dealer is about 40 minutes away. Willing to provide tours of local twisties. Have friends in Sydney (NSW) and Launceston (TAS) if you need help there. Leave message on phone if no answer, or email lemonchili@hotmail.com

(Sorry if that's a bit long!)

cheers,
chili
