All the downturn has done is brought forward by a couple of decades the west's date with demographic destiny. The United States has a fertility rate of around 2.1 — or just over two kids per couple. Greece, as I pointed out in America Alone, has one of the lowest fertility rates on the planet - 1.3 children per couple, which places it in the "lowest-low" demographic category from which no society has recovered and, according to the UN, 178th out of 195 countries. In practical terms, it means 100 grandparents have 42 grandkids – ie, the family tree is upside down. | ||

There are many parts of the.... declared platform of the Democrat Party I like. Hey, old school Liberal/libertarian type here. Equal pay, equal work. Equal rights. Equal under the law. Equal chances.... Which should mean that you have a shot at whatever you want... Equal outcomes, which seems to be the goal, is nuts. I will never make a great Jockey. Even if I was 15 years old again, I'm too big to compete with small dudes. Jockey types just aren't going to be stars in the NBA. But being from Greece or Persia, or different skin color should have no say in what you do. And, for the most part, Americans, being the sons and daughters of immigrants, let that happen and are happy for the newer folk who come here and want to be us, succeed. We don't have racial purity laws, like Germany, or generally care what church you go to.... And that's where the D Party loses me, the built in "liberal white guilt" is there because the Party has been darn racist, historically, and is the one who passed racial purity laws, and has been seduced by/taken over by, the Leftists, who's basic MO is spread hate and exploit that anger to take people's freedoms and stuff. Marriage laws, Marriage as a Government Institution, got going here as part of the racial purity/KKK movement. Gun control was started, more than a century ago, as a way to keep the slaves, then ex slaves, down. Now, the Leftist slant want's to disarm everyone, because that's a needed step before the "Papers, Bitte" stage of Government. And of course race hate is a grand way of dividing people and exploiting them. So, while I do think the D's could overcome the racist past, they instead deny it, and try to re-write history and make it all go away. That just drives pathologies deeper. And , since I may be Liberal, I'm also rabidly Counter-Revolutionary, the leftist aspect just torques me off. Why counter-revolutionary? Because I'm naturally going to distrust power, and while the "capitalist running dog lackey" aspects of my society annoy me, every case with the exception of the Scandahoovian cultures, neo marxism/socialism/etc. just goes bad. An ideology based on hate and lies just tends to go Gestapo. Nazi's, Soviets, Maoists, Left Liberation wars and regimes in South America and Africa... the list is endless and the tale is blood soaked. Don't even get me going on the Republican Party. Pretty sure to get a drone strike if I do. | ||

It's a strange thing. In spy novels the President sometimes has a "Mission Impossible" group that does things to save the world. Great in a book, but kind of terrifying in the real world. I'm all for blowing up the enemies of civilization... unless I'm one myself, now that would suck. It does annoy the neighbors. You have to be very selective and clear about your motives to avoid making more people you need to kill. I Don't think that's working as well as we'd like. Never mind the "Terminator" issue. We probably have a few years yet before the automated factories and automated McDonalds decide they've had enough and wipe out mankind. The problem is power corrupts, etc. and when things get weird, people want something done about it! So... you get things like the Patriot Act, and Temporary Emergency Powers ( that never go away ) and Secret Drone Strikes... And, we have a periodic change in Executive Leaders, for the express purpose of not having Dictators For Life, which we know is Bad. So We give Barack Obama permission to bomb folk without constraint, and many never think that in the future, we have Jeb Bush with the power to say, "kill them" with no constraint... ( fill in the politician names of your choice ) So far as I know Barry isn't bombing folk who write bad things about him on the internet... ( BOOOOM ) Who Knows about the Donald. ( or the Marco, or the Hillary ) Of course, that's just paranoia. It's not like we'd get put in jail for making a video offensive to some religious group, right? | ||

I'll accept that as a valid opinion.  Gaesati, What's to get a handle on? I'm happy to tell anyone what my political views are, and they can change if I learn more. Don't know who said it first, but I'd rather be right than consistent, I'd rather be factually correct than win an argument, and I firmly believe there is subjective reality. I could be wrong on that last part, but repeated attempts to impose my will on gravity ( a poorly understood part of physics, but a VERY well understood part of engineering ) have all failed without wings, or some other way to cheat. I may have missed the exceptions, but every. single. time. I have jumped out of an airplane, the planet Earth rose up to hit me. Or off a garage roof. Or did something stupid and been high sided off my bike. I could go on. I also firmly believe that you MUST mock authority, that Tyrants fear laughter more than bullets, and that while it can be hard in the face of personal or planetary tragedy, keeping a sense of humor, black as it may be, helps keep you relatively sane in a world full of angry, manipulating power hungry wretches that tend to be the kind of people in Government.... because where else could they get jobs to order people around with no skills or talent? They don't get mocked enough. Also... Girl Genius is freaking brilliant, and the writer/artists are quite mad. One suggestion for maximal reading pleasure. ( besides start at the beginning so you are not confused ) There are pages where characters walk down a street with dialog. After you read and chuckle at the jokes, go back and look at signs and in shop windows. | ||

Well, Harry has his priorities straight.
