I see people talking about the weight of a motorcycle like it's important or something. To those people so concerned about weight I have to ask: Are you riding it, or CARRYING it???

Or do you simply drop it a lot and find yourself asking for help picking it up? Because if that's the case, maybe you need a different hobby? I just don't get it...

*Note: If you are an amateur or professional racer looking for tenths or hundredths of a second off of your lap times, you can disregard the above. But if you ARE a racer, what're you doing competing on a touring or sport-touring bike? GET A RACE BIKE!!

to quote someone we're all familiar with.....

"Light is fun at any speed. Whether your going at the ragged edge of AMA speed or just riding down a twisty road. Light feels good everywhere."

People ride different bikes for different reasons. I ride for that feeling of freedom and control that comes from a highly responsive bike that goes where I want it to go when I want it to go there.

Responsiveness comes from several elements (good engine, good brakes, good chassis etc.) but the one thing that helps responsiveness more than anything is low weight.

A light-weight bike will turn easier, accelerate quicker and stop faster.

I'll never own a motorcycle that weighs over 500 pounds.

If I want something that's smooth and comfortable for long highway rides, I'll get a convertible.

My Uly is just as smooth and comfortable on long highway rides as my old FLHP Road King was. Different seating position, sure, but still a great all-day tourer.

And half the weight.

With twice the responsiveness.

Throttle, steering, braking, all feel hard-wired directly to my brain. The FLHP? Well, it wasn't, not by any stretch. And once I did communicate my desires to the bike, it still took one or two beats for the bike to actually pull it off. Nothing major, nothing extreme, but even a lane change would take a split second or two to execute just because of a slower response time from the bike.

Physics.

Inertia.

Google 'em, they absolutely apply here. Weight is HUGE when it comes to the personality of a motorcycle.

I agree - I've just started bumbling about on an RK around the backcountry roads I live on - it takes quite a bit more thought/attention than previous bikes. It's still a ton of fun though - almost literally ; )

I think what other folks are saying has merit though - I doubt the difference between a 550lb machine and a 565lb machine can be felt by the majority of riders - it probably matters most in the same class of bikes where the majority of the weight is located (COM).

Regardless of what happens to EBR/Buell bikes I doubt I'd ever be in the market - I'd rather do what a few guys in the old school section are doing (and I still may), even after watching some of the IOM coverage. I'd also like to get a clapped out 76 kawi 750ltd and do it up - but that's a nostalgia thing as well. Am I glad there's folks in the market for 30K+ bikes, and 75K+ cars, absolutely. It still bothers me seeing my managers who pull down almost triple what I do driving rather pedestrian vehicles, but to each his own.

Not sure why it bothers somebody that somebody above them in the org chart drives an older vehicle. There is GOODNESS in never having to make payments. Amazing how much time and financial flexibility that gives a person - to NOT live in fear of the first of the month.

I know a LOT of people who get co-signed into a lifetime of debt by irresponsible parents while they're still in their early 20s working entry-level jobs. They then roll their debt into the next obligation again and again and again instead of waiting a few years... or better yet, buying used.

I'm not a management guy by ANY stretch of the imagination but when I bought my 08 F150 (used in 2011) - I realized that if my ownership record holds, it might just last me til my dying day.

Patience grasshopper... patience. (said no loan officer, ever)

I get that completely - all my cars are paid for and I'm hoping at least one makes it to 300K miles(currently at 175K) which would mean it survives 3 kids learning to drive in it, and it was bought used. I just lament at the fact that they drive what to them are disposable cars, vs. spending some good money on something nice that they'll be happy still driving 20 yrs. down the road…Pedestrian may have been the wrong term, as it seems many around here have signed themselves up for a car payment for life by recycling their lease every 3 years - exactly what Slaughter stated in his second sentence.

Regardless, it's their money, and they get to roll their own anyway they choose.

That generally means nobody's handing out raises any time soon. Working for a boss who "acts" poor often leads to disappointment.

We can be sure that Mr. Buell hasn't been sitting on the couch picking his nose and watching Michael Strahan run away from garter snakes.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what develops out of this weird situation.

I do not think any of the current owners of EBR are allowed by law to bid on the company now that it is in receivership.

That right there more than anything makes me think HERO is the source of this whole mess.

It would have been so easy to let them(Hero) just buy the rest of the company but instead Erik basically scorched the earth for them.
