So I haven't had much luck anywhere else and I know there are a few mopar rats hereand was hoping someone might be able to help. I have an 04 stratus with. 2.7 v6 automatic; it was involved in a driver side offset gender bender a few months ago(long story) in which the shifter cable was knocked off. I purchased an ebay shifter cable hooked everything up and now everything works fine except my shift interlock. I can shift into any gear at any time WITHOUT depressing the brake pedal.

This is very unsafe and unsettling(I have nocked into into drive while parked several times)but have not been able to find any information as to how to fix the shift interlock. My best guess is something is broken or disconnected, anyone have any clue where this is located on the car?

Not familiar with your specific vehicle, but check that your brake lights are working correctly. It's possible that the brake switch has failed or is out of adjustment and the brake lights are on all the time. I'm sure it's the brake light circuit that operates the interlock.

Brake lights are all working correctly and the brake switch appears to be fine.

In that case I would suspect the servo that operates it has failed or become disconnected. Probably located either on the trans or at the shift lever.

BTW, sorry to hear about the "gender bender" accident.

Is the shifter cable you got for a same-year car? Or could it be it doesn't have the interlock function? Were there ANY differences in the cable itself?

Looking in my '03 parts lookup (newest I have), I don't see anything specific called out in the shifter or in the brake pedal for "interlock". Only thing on the brake pedal is the brakelight switch.

Check fuses?

Shifter cable was exactly the same, installed per factory diagram I picked up from the dealer. On the previous generation stratus the bsi module was located on the shifter mechanism, but for the life of me I can't find it on this one, nor can I find a part number(I do not have a factory service manual though)

The only other thing I see is "cable - ignition interlock". If the shift cable was severed...where? Could it have gotten the ignition cable too?

Just brainstorming..not having seen the accident damage nor the replaced parts...

I'd google for an FSM, or maybe hit a mopar forum...

OVERHAUL - 41TE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

SHIFT INTERLOCK CABLE > DESCRIPTION

The Brake Transmission Shifter/Ignition Interlock (BTSI) is a cable and solenoid operated system that prevents the transmission gear shifter from being moved out of PARK without a driver in place.

The Brake Transmission Shifter/Ignition Interlock (BTSI) is engaged whenever the ignition switch is in the LOCK or ACCESSORY position (Figure). An additional electrically activated feature will prevent shifting out of the PARK position unless the brake pedal is depressed at least one-half inch. A magnetic holding device integral to the interlock cable is energized when the ignition is in the ON/RUN position. When the key is in the ON/RUN position and the brake pedal is depressed, the shifter is unlocked and will move into any position. The interlock system also prevents the ignition switch from being turned to the LOCK or ACCESSORY position, unless the shifter is in the gated PARK position.



Sound like your interlock cable is kinked? Otherwise the system would fail in the locked position.

If the interlock works with the key out of the ignition, but not while the car is running,check fuse number 4 in the dash board fuse block, it is a 15A fuse. The portion of the brake switch that disengages the shift interlock is grounded with the brakes off (engaging the sol.), and open when you hit the brakes (disengaging the solenoid). If fuse 4 is blown the solenoid will not have any power. If the interlock never works it may be a problem with the cable/installation or the shifter itself. It is common for the mechanism in the shifter to break, but it usually goes the other way and wont allow you to shift at all.
