The drug they treated the Drs with was from Russia. Some in the medical world said the treatment they recived was from Russia With Gloves. There was minor mention the the Russians were going to help with treatment of Ebola.
I wonder how did they just happen to have drugs to treat the specific strain of Ebola that the Drs had? Is this outbreak s Opps Sounds kinda of strange.
"WOW... he died only 18 days after arriving in Dallas. Did they give him the same treatment as the two doctors who got cured?"
There is no more of that drug. It was in development, and it was all used. I don't know whether they're making more. I hadn't heard that it was from Russia. Link please.
I was just curious why he didn't get it, I figured there was more available and did not know it was only in testing phase. The medicine doesn't work for everyone anyways.. (someone died from it last week?) Sucks for all of us in any case.
My eyebrows were also raised when I heard that the country contributing the most medical personnel to the current hot zones was Cuba.
That's not proof or anything, and I'm paid to be paranoid and much of my paranoia is just that... paranoia.
But if I *was* a Russian that had purposefully or accidentally let loose some kind of awful bug, and I wanted some control over boots of the ground in the middle of it but some plausible arms length capabilities, I'd go in as "Cubans".
Here's an uncompensated plug for two books: "The Hot Zone," by Richard Preston, and "Biohazard," by Ken Alibek. Good, if dated, background to help understand what's going on. Not sure if they're still in print, but probably available thru the magic of Amazon.
Read both back when they paid me to be paranoid. Now it's just a hobby.
Could that be the reason we sent troops. Catch the Cubans possible Russian proxies intended or unintended. That would give the marine unit some one to shoot at A M4 is not really suited to kill viruses with out killing the hosts. The Zmapp company is totally private and not much is been in the MSM about them till of late. Franklin Graham asked to aid them by possible Investment he was rebuffed.
Not many companies that turn down money to develop new products
So if there are now ~20,000 infected, and the number of infected continues to double every 3 weeks, the human race has right at a year for the pandemic to run its course.
The Sudan is mile or two away from the area of the epidemic.
I am not going to go digging about for quotes but I thing the prez has said that we can control tis sort of thing. Ebola is not super contagious, direct contact is required and quarantines have been shown to work over and over again in areas with lousy medical facilities. As long as the proper precautions are taken, which seems to have been an issue in Dallas, this won't spread real far or fast.
Spain simply screwed there response completely up. Improper technique, poor protective gears, general incompetence.
What is going to be a problem is panic. The fear mongers seems driven to scare the living crap out of people.
Of course this is a dangerous disease but I think that ultimately more people in the US will die this year from the flu than from Ebola.
Right, the problem isn't a serial liar president, who's allowed the first ever Ebola infection into America, encouraged illegal immigration, uses govt authorities to target/silence opposition, angrily tells us that "ISIL is not islamic", and contradicts his own defense department and the CDC, the big risk is the ignorant people who point these things out and their "panic"?
Interesting that "thrill up my leg" Chris Mathews is asking the same question I was . . . . (and I concur that this stuff appears to be difficult to transmits) . . . but Obam tells us one day that it's "unlikely" . . . a week later there are 2 cases in the USA . . now 14 . . . now perhaps Brooklyn.
Scarier yet is when a neighborhood organizer directly contradicts the CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL . . . who ya gonna believe? . . . hoodie from Chicago or Ph.D researcher in Immunology?
It may be tough to transmit but this idiot has an unequaled track record for screwing up even the most simple of things.
Or everyone that listens to talk radio where they compare statements made by "authorities" and how the message changes day by day. They are running screaming through the streets...... actually some are buying cases of bottled water just in case, which is good prep for the coming winter storms.
No one with a brain is panicking. The ones who do always do.
However I understand the guys that clean up vomit & such on airliners aren't happy.
Scarier yet is when a neighborhood organizer directly contradicts the CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL . . . who ya gonna believe? . . . hoodie from Chicago or Ph.D researcher in Immunology?
When the Ph.D is from the CDC, I don't believe either of them, sadly. Though the Ph.D will at least lie better.
It's a shame we have politically weaponized our government infrastructure.
Dave you stated the reasons why Ebola will spread. Inattention to detail and non adherence to procedures . The CDC has had major issues with that in house of late. As that famous TV Dr said every body lies. People are why Ebola will spread because our gov is dealing with this as a political issue rather than a public health issue. My Sweetie is a public health professional she says the gov is going to mess this up because they are ignoring proven protocols.
Unfortunately the politicians made it that way by being......politicians.
Ebola is not hard to get. Aids is hard to get. Flu is hard to avoid.
Dave. The president may believe he knows more than his advisers. ...in fact he has said so. On record. While I have no idea what his grades in school were, since rich people paid to have them sealed, I don't recall from either of his biographies that he ever took any health or medical courses. That may have been because he wanted to project an aura of revolutionary fervor and taking CPR doesn't fit that image.
Taking health advice from Obama. ...or G. Bush, is not the road to longevity.
You state, correctly, that past outbreaks in isolated villages were contained by quarantine. True.
The President has decided not to have any quarantine and most especially not impose any travel ban. Pundits believe that's because of his ongoing desire to impose an amnesty after the election in a few weeks. They believe that he has decided that any travel ban would weaken his power to do so.
No matter what Barack's reasons he has chosen to not follow France and England in trying to prevent ebola from coming here. The British health ministry guy has stated that the announced "screening" has never worked with flu, did not work with SARS and will not work with Ebola. Since the Brit Doctor has no U.S. domestic political axe to grind I tend to believe him more than a political appointee of this.....or the last administration.
Ebola is a class 4 biohazard. Pick an unpleasant body fluid. If you touch any of them from an infected person, and you have an unnoticeable fissure, crack, or cut on the skin in contact it can infect you.
All of the unpleasant fluids....urine, spit, snot, mucus, feces, sweat..... are going to have blood and active virus in them. We do NOT KNOW that you are safe before the infected person has a high fever.
We DO KNOW that many professional medical experts have died dealing with past outbreaks without knowing how they got infected. A hand rubbed under the nose or in the eye after a droplet from a cough lands on it is enough. Or contact with a sweat soaked cloth.....then touching face.... ....
It is not certain.... but very probable that it is not airborne like the flu. We think you need bigger droplets than hang around like flu does. But some past outbreaks may have been airborne. Since the virus mutates as it goes from victim to victim it may become less virulent. .... or more. If Ebola spread as fast and as easy as flu we would be in big trouble. So far no sign that will happen...or that it has a good chance of happening. I sure Hope we don't see that Change.
Corruption, politics, and I wouldn't trust statistics coming from any of the stricken countries. Places claiming a few 10s of cases had gravediggers planting thousands.... then going on strike because they hadn't been paid, the money went into other pockets.
We are sending 2000 troops into a high disease zone. In mu experience it will be a miracle if not a single one of the men come down with a fresh dose of one or another STD given six months. Perhaps no one will contract Ebola, but that’s not really the way to bet it.
Between this, and the idiot who claimed to have Ebola on a plane for a joke, I wouldn't fly for a while...
and the joker will be prosecuted... you DO NOT call out to your buddy Jack at an airport. This may not be rational, but it's been the policy for years that you. will. not. mess. with. airport. security. You can make all the "training us to be sheep" comments you want, and I may agree, but you do not joke with the Gestapo. They have no sense of humor. Not much intelligence either. They DO have a script. The script says, joke about things that annoy us, and we will show you how we dislike you. And send you to jail.
Flying commercial is not on my list of things to do for a while....
I have a question. I've read that Ebola can't survive outside of a host. On dry surfaces it survives a few hours at best. If that's the case then why are hazmat teams sterilizing the homes of the infected? Couldn't they simply leave them under lock and key for a few days?
Yes....except the wet stuff is still infectious. Damp sheets, mattresses, chair cushions.... towels. ...
You should be safe touching a doorknob a day or so after it's dried off. Should. If that's incorrect. ... you may die.
Balancing "should" with rational precautions is a bit tricky. That nurse in Spain used rational precautions.
I figure don't have irrational fears.....the real ones are bad enough. It's bad juju disease.
It sure isn't time to lock yourself in a bunker...... it is time to be a bit careful about wearing gloves if you clean up vomit. A week ago any local case was in a medical center. ( except Dallas ) next week it could be a guy puking at the mall.
How paranoid should you be with hemorrhagic fever? Good question. I'm glad I'm in the CPR camp that doesn't do mouth to mouth anymore. Just chest compressions. I started carrying nitrile gloves.
I'm not hiding yet.....and I work at vector central. The folk killed in the last biowarfare attack were my union brothers and sisters.
