Every year, I go out for a New Year's day ride. It's been my own personal tradition for a few decades, now. Some years, it's a longer ride than on other years; Temperature is one of the main factors that govern the length of my ride. Other factors are the amount of snow or ice on the roads. I don't worry much about salt; there's a car wash a short distance away, and I can hose the bike down at the end of the ride. The coldest I've gone out was 8* F and the warmest was 59* F. This year, the forecast is for a high of 16* F with scattered snow showers. I don't think it will be a long ride; although the year it was 8*, I rode over 50 miles. I have a Gerbing's jacket liner, and that helps a lot. I haven't been on my bike since I bought my '98 Ford Ranger last month, and while I enjoy my New Toy, I'm starting to get the itch to ride again. Keeping my Tradition is fueling the itch quite a bit. I have a friend who goes out for a ride every Halloween, and he has met me for lunch on New Year's Day some years, and I've joined him on Halloween some years, but we each have our own priorities. Does anybody else here have a similar Tradition? This is from 2006. I was washing the salt off after the ride.

You should head to the Sidewalk Cafe in Manhattan Wednesday morning for the annual "Isle of Man(hattan)" ride they hold every year on New Year's Day... |

Crusty- Good see see other folks here are true badweather bikers. We have two similar traditions: 1) Thanksgiving day breakfast run and 2) Christmas day ride. Both started when we were still in Florida and realized how little traffic was on the road both days. Weather is a little spottier here than back in FL, so we stick to front range (not mountain) roads and plan to keep both traditions in tact. This year it was in the high 30's on Christmas Day for our ride and our motorcycling neighbor and curious sometimes-riding daughter were walking by when we returned home. They were surprised we had the bikes out when it was so cold. We explained that as long as there is no snow and ice on the roads and we gear up properly, there's no reason not to ride. |

The Denver & Aurora chapters of ABATE of Colo. have The Brass Monkey Run, every year on New Year's Eve day. I've made quite a few of these, but now living in western SoDak, it's iffy at best to even get off the hill I live on, much less across Wyoming... |

The first few years I worked at Smoky Mountain HD/BUELL, we would do a New Year's day ride over the Cherohala Skyway... slowly, most of the route. Depending on the weather, might be fun to see who's up for some kind of ride around here! I've not ridden the Beemer in a while due to some bad tendonitis... gotta find a good treatment for that. |

It's definitely sidestands up here in Northern Colorado. High 40's and low 50's the next couple days. Other than having mountains as a backdrop, and let's not forget NO HUMIDITY really not a big difference from being in Florida over the New Years holidays. I'll be using a bike for errands today, and a ride is likely on the agenda for tomorrow. YAY! |

Gonna go for a new years / birthday ride tomorrow on the mighty 250 after I get my free breakfast at Denny's. I see many WFO laps on Sugarloaf.(depending of course on the PoPo). |

Fast-is that sugarloaf "mountain" in clermont that you are referring to? If so, watch out for the bicyclists. Also happy birthday and happy newyear! |

BEAUTIFUL day looking out the window... then the digital thermometer still says 39 degrees! Oh well, NBD, the plan is to wait til later this afternoon, once the warmest part of the day hits, along with the painkiller for this damn tendonitis... Still have 2# PEI mussels to cook, about a half-dozen Malpaque oysters to snack on, and Hoppin' Johns coming up for dindin! HAPPY NEW YEAR, ALL! |

No riding in Mid Michigan today. Currently 7 degrees above with a feel like temp of 0. Roads are clear of snow but lots of ice patches around. And I NEED a ride too. |

Around 20 degrees and snowing sideways here. I'm smoking a pork shoulder instead. Mmmmm... BBQ! |

Yeppers- despite the gorgeous day today, looks like we're getting that snow tomorrow and the next few days... gonna take the dawgies on a walk and contemplate a short ride around town. The tendonitis really makes clutch pulls, even on the Beemer, quite painful. But hey, "no pain, no gain", right? |

I just got back from a 2-hr ride through the foothills. 65* and sunny. Only downside is that 2013 goes on record as the driest year on record with just over 3" total, making the hills dry and brown instead of lush green. The grazing cattle all look like they came from Somalia. |

I got a ride in, but I only put in about 20 miles. My Norge developed a problem that I think is caused by a broken alternator belt. I didn't have time to investigate it today. Anyway, it was 22° F; not my coldest NYD ride by a good bit. |

Had a nice 30ish minute ride late yesterday through the foothills backroads, layered up enough to still be comfortable, the Beemer spun up a little over 70... quite enjoyable! I'd been worried about my left elbow and this damn tendonitis, and it really didn't hurt too bad at all. Now we're looking at rain all day until it changes to snow, then lows in the teens, single digits in a day or 2... yikes! |

40's in the sun, 30's in the shadows, wind chilly enough to make it a short ride, but I managed to get in a few rec miles with a friend on his sweet xb :-) Back and forth to work is still ccccooolld, but the Cyclone is still running well. Happy New Year!!! |

No rides on NY Day here. We had nearly two inches of accumulation over night and then we learned a new term describing some sleet-like snow....graupel. First experience with that on Wednesday as well. However, all's well that ends well. 58 balmy degrees out today. I took the XT running errands and Mr. Twisty rode the X to work. May be our last hurrah for awhile as the weather is supposed to turn tonight. Maybe the skis will finally get some use! |

It was about 15 Wednesday, but I took my DR out for a ride. It wasn't too bad. The ice was the crap part. |
