Finished it up not too long ago. Haven't had a chance to get out and plink with it yet The weather has been sucking bad in the NW.

Let me know what ya think? I was kind of winging it being my first experience building an AR.

I built an 80% lower into a .458 SOCOM.Seven months wait for the RRA upper. Couple weeks for the RRA lower parts kit. Starline brass was four months and dies were "right now" on ebay for 1/3rd of what the gougers were asking on gunbrokers. Well worth the wait. Shoots great.

@Just: That is one bad azz rifle you have going. How's it shoot?

@Nuke: That's a good buy on a Lower Build Kit.

The barrel on my rifle is a Wilson Combat match stainless 18", 1:8 SPR. The gas system is rifle length. And the handguard is a YHM 15" extended rifle.

It also has other Wilson Combat parts...BCG, Gas Block, Gas Tube, Charing Handle, Ejection Port Assembly, Forward Assist and Upper Receiver.

The LPK is CMMG. I did replace the trigger with a ALG ACT Combat Trigger. And also added a BAD Lever.

I had so much fun building the rifle. I picked up a SA&A Complete Magpul MOE Lower. So I could build another over time.

It would be fun to make a carbine on the 7.62x25 cartridge.

Overall, it looks like a cool "build"
I hope you had fun putting it together.

As with any AR assembly or any purchased firearm, I try to have an "intent" or "purpose" in mind for the weapon.

Since you did not list the components, it looks like you choose a heavy SS barrel. That would suggest to me that you want a long range target/varmint/bench type firearm. If that is the intent, I would not bother with BUIS. It also looks like you would have to remove the scope to actually use the BUIS.

I hope you get a chance to shoot it soon to see how it performs.

The magnifier flips out of the way and the red dot can be sighted through with the irons. They don't call 'em backup sights for nothin.'

Why the grip of shame? Break the trigger guard ears off the lower?

.458 SOCOM shot well on the initial "function test" target. Six shots of 1/2 grain powder increments behind 325 grain jacketed bullets.All functioned fine. Last two shots were in the 6/7 ring and were cast bullets that cut the cleaner holes in the paper. Those two did not cycle the action. It was cold out and kneeling at 50 yards. Had a 12' square tarp to catch the expensive brass and that part kinda sucks. Scope was a used eBay unit that I simply slapped on the rail and flung home it's quick release lever.Never expected it to be that close to even hitting the 'aimed at' target on the holder. She is a winner and well worth the time it took to get all the pieces.Can't wait till the next outing in the Spring with more loads and a shooting rest to see what it can really do!Shooting buddy that came along was more impressed with the SOCOM than the 1918 BAR I brought along.

@Nine:

The barrel is a Wilson Combat Stainless Match SPR 18", 1:8. The other Wilson Combat parts are the Gas Block and Gas Tube, Bolt Carrier Group, Charging Handle, Ejection Port Assembly, Forward Assist Assembly, Flash Hider and Upper Receiver.

It also has a CMMG LPK, ALG Combat Trigger and a Magpul B.A.D. Lever.

The 6X Magnifier does flip to the side and the Magpul MBUS are 1/3 Cowitness through the Red Dot.

As for what I'll be doing with the rifle. I'll just be shooting it.

@Rick_a:

Nope, didn't break the ears off. I like the look and feel of the Stark Equipment SE-5 Grip. The grip has a better ergonomic feel and places the index finger level with the trigger.

I have a SA&A Complete Magpul MOE lower that I picked up after I finished with this build. Not sure what direction I'll go with it?

Pdxs....

That is a good list of components.
Most important if you are going to "just shoot it" for accuracy is the nice WC SS 1/8 SPR profile barrel : )
Is it rifle gas length or intermediate?

Also think the ALG ACT is the best trigger "for the buck" out there, the QMS is almost as good.

I am not much for extra magnifiers but many swear by them.
Do you have to flip it out of the way to pop the lens cover open on the RDS?

Going against the grain, I don't see the need of BUIS with the quality of optics like Aimpoint, Eotech and on the lower end Burris ect. I do like Irons for a KISS lightweight carbine and a 1-4X Burris MTAC for example on an SPR w/o the BUIS.

The countless options is the great part of AR type platform!

So when do we get a range report complete with pics of the target?

Sweet. Well done.

Very closely matches what I like in a rifle. The pistol grip is a very personal item. I like several, and dislike a few. The Hogue is very nice, for me, but others hate it. Who cares?

Years of assembling Bicycles taught me that the parts you are in contact with, seat, grips, pedals, are more important than what the frame is made of. The relationship between the contact points is important, but if the bits above are in the same positions, you have to be really expert to tell what bike is beneath you.

Not to say it doesn't make a difference. A light 531 Reynolds frame is more lively and more fun to ride than a heavier water pipe one. Build a good steel alloy frame & a good aluminum one, same mass & parts, and then you get differences of opinion. Mashers like a stiffer frame, spinners prefer the more flexible.... sometimes.

But aching hands, a butt & feet on fire, a carbon fibre super bike is just not your joy in life.

In an AR build, stock, grip, hand guard.

I especially like the hand guard with rails where you want, and nothing to catch the brush where you don't. Thanks for the update.

@Nine:

It's a rifle length gas system. And yep, gotta flip the magnifier to the side to get the RDS cover flipped down. I'm hoping to get out soon with it. The weather has been uber nasty here in the southern Willamette Valley of Oregon. Snow and ice for over a week.

I really like the ALG trigger. And for the price. It's hard to beat. I'll be installing one in the SA&A Complete Lower picked up.

@Nuke:

I still might put a scope on it. Want to get some range time with it first. And see how the magnifier works.

The build was fun. There is a lot to be said for taking a box full of parts and making something functional out of them.

I'm going to switch out the bolt catch for the Phase 5 catch (it looks freaking cool). Add a Troy Ambi Mag Release. Replace the safety with a Ambi BAD A$$. And lastly a Magpul UBR Buttstock. The rifle needs a little more weight out back to balance it out.

Even though the AR was fun to build. And there are so many different ways to configure it, with great ease in doing so. And I'm totally looking forward to building my new complete lower. This will always be my true love.

I've owned this rifle for 26 years and have shot many rounds down range with it. I've done a little bit of work to it, to help it shoot better. The only thing left to do is replacing the rear sight.

Pdxs....

I think you would be wise in going to a rifle type stock.
You got a very good base weapon, whether we all agree on the "best" sighting system(s) or not : )

Not to get too far OT, but...
What do you know or think about the Mini30?

I have been considering the 16" barreled version to back up my SKS.
Looking for other options other than an AK variant.
Any thoughts?

@Nine:

I might go with either the Magpul PRS or the UBR. Still undecided. Gotta save up my pennies too.

I do have experience with a Mini Thirty. I've owned one since 89 and I love it. Especially now that there is factory 20 rd magazines.

@Nuke: That is a very cool offer. I'll get you my info a little later today.

Here's a shot of my Mini Thirty...I did a bunch of work to it too. The biggest thing, giving it a coating of Duracoat. Which was an interesting project.

My rifle will shoot steel case ammo but, it prefers brass. From what I have read. The new Mini Thirty's handle steel case ammo better then what the old series of rifle's did. Also, the new 30's have a .310 bore. Unlike mine that has a .308 bore.

The Mini platform is a very reliable firearm. I love my stainless 14. Done a lot of shooting with it. And it's one I'll never get rid of. I hope to add a stainless tactical to the toolbox one day. lol...gotta finish up on this 1st AR. Then get things rolling on the 2nd lower I picked up. I'm really digging the ability to configure a rifle the way I want it.
