In my absence from BadWeB I'm out of touch with a lot of stuff that's been posted, so apologies if this has been seen before.

The most comprehensive explanation I've come across yet.

http://yorkshireferret.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/bart on-motors-sparton-phoenix-and-more.html

As a Yorkshire born and bred man myself, I've no idea who the author is and why it would appeal to someone known as the Yorkshire Ferret. I'll see if I can track him down. See if he's a Buell hooligan!

Very interesting read; thanks! Isn't there still some "missing" story though? It'd be interesting to know what happened between the end of the history detailed here and when Mr. Buell bought the designs and tooling.

The Silver Dream Racer story is missing. I know from Graham Dyson they had Astralite build the frame and wheels for the SDR, which according to Dyson the film company never paid anything toward. Hart believed the film money would save Barton but they never received a penny and it killed them. This is apparently how it came to be that Hart sold everything to Erik when he arrived to buy 'a bike' I believe.

At about the same time as Barton were building their first 3 cylinder 350 I remember seeing a few other similar projects at Brands Hatch.

I was only a whippersnapper then so don't remember the technical details sadly. I know there was at least one 'home brew' 3 cylinder Yamaha made from a TZ250 with an extra cylinder grafted on the end of the crank to make a 425cc racer. I am pretty sure there was also similar Suzuki T500 twin based 3 cylinder too, raced I think by Barry Ditchburn?

Can you imagine turning up to a big International meeting now and seeing 'shed built' specials racing with the top guys of the time on factory bikes and holding their own against them?

Ah proper racing, with blue smoke coming out the back of a wailing stroker, & none of this namby-pamby knee dragging stuff.

Is that a two stroke thing with the close ratio gearbox? Every corner is quite a workout.
