This month represents 14 years of Buell ownership for me. I have weathered the storm!

I might have broken BadWeB rules along the way, and indeed broken another right now, but is it not time to forget the bad weather of the past and look forward to some bright sunshine with me catching a tan here? I think so.

I don't believe Erik will forgive our past disagreements, and I've no intention of stirring the honey pot again. I have made the peace with Court some time ago. I hope Blake, you too will embrace my friendship once again. What say you. Can I come play in your sand box please? I promise to behave : )

Keep on Buellin, Rocket

You've got me beat by only a couple years (of ownership). I thought you were crustier than that. How many rebuilds so far? (JK)

Thank you for the welcome, though I do feel like I'm taking a bit of a liberty here. Let's not forget I am banned and I have kinda snook in through the back door. Well, blatantly, front door actually. But sometimes there is a course of action you have to take, and I feel as if I ask permission an opportunity presents itself for the boys in charge around here to politely say no. Thus I am gate crashing my way back in. In the best possible way of course, but that's just an excuse and ultimately I don't really expect to be around for long. Nor this topic to stay afloat so to speak. But if I am, and it does, then all the better.

In the spirit of fair play it's only right that I await to see what will happen regarding my 'return'. So I shan't rabbit on about life, my Buell, and the universe according to Rocket just for now. So, politely, I am in East Yorkshire and the Big Black Beast has done about a paltry 20000 miles with only one major rebuild since I did it myself.

Nice to hear from you all.

Was out on the big bad Buell last night. By, it runs well. Popped here for a cuppa and a wonder. Always an eclectic mix of stuff to drool over.

LOL!!

Thanks Bro. Please cut n paste this to BEG.

I've never lost faith in my Buell. Bought it new 14 years ago last month. It's the second one, after my first went bang after only a month, and my repeated requests to Eddy Wright about excessive pinking and knocking fell on deaf ears. I got my money back and drove straight up to Newcastle and bought this one from Dale who then was the man at Just Harleys. JH went down hill after Dale got pushed out! Eddy's rebuilt what was my first one, and it got tiger striped paintwork. They did two I believe, at that time, 1998/9. I have a pic somewhere of the other one. I'd be surprised if either survive now. At least not with the tiger paintwork, which I believe was done by Dream Machine for both bikes. And to be clear, we are talking S1WL's here and not S1's. There is a difference. That said, it was seeing the yellow S1 on the cover of an American magazine, think it was Christmas 1995, that had me ditch instantly my several years of searching and test riding (four in total) Harley XR1000 Sportsters, as I'd wanted one since first seeing one in 1984! The caption on the magazine read in part "Buell Builds a Streetfighter", and I can tell you I was that hooked instantly I was at Sparks in North London the first week of the new year 1996, test riding one of their imported S1's with US pulleys, and a number plate they made up that day, telling me not to worry about those new speed camera things on the A1! I couldn't afford their £9500 asking price at that time, and that was for their press demo bike at a reduced price from £10500

life went down hill from here

The Rocket 'heads' (whatever they are) are the standard Thunderstorm Heads, which Just Harleys (under Dale) sent to Dick O'Brien (Google him) in the States to have mine and their world record breaking fastest street Buell heads, gas flowed by. As far as I'm aware there were no others flowed by Dick, as he died sometime after. The 'Rocket' 'England' engraving I had done, as that is who I am on BadWeB and UK BEG (though I've never managed to make my or remember my original passwords and gave up trying a few years ago), Rocket in England.

Yes the exhaust wrap does need replacing but it does have a nice worn look about it and as much as I like my Buell to look clean and shiny, I also like it with a certain patina that tells the world it does get used. And believe me, used it has been. It does not look better in the workshop as that is a few years old that pic. It's had other stuff done since then, including, I eventually managed to find a wave rotor for the front to match the rear. It's only took about 8 years!

As for signing back in to BadWeB, and as Bob put it, me becoming a crabby bastard, ah well. First off, there were never multiple Buell websites I danced between. There was BadWeB and Sacborg, and Sacborg became home to many defectors from BadWeB when one very well respected member upset the BadWeB apple cart and choose to jump ship to Sacborg. I've been a fan of BadWeb for all of my Buell time. It is the greatest Buell place on the Internet. I remain to this day a friend of Blake's. I don't know if he feels the same way, as his Buell passion runs a great deal deeper than mine, and I understand and respect that, and it is with much regret that I couldn't keep my mouth shut nor my opinions to myself were things Buell were concerned, and in the end BadWeB, Blake, and the moderators had no place left to go. It of course didn't help that Erik and I never saw eye to eye, and at the time of the 1125 coming to market, I'm pretty sure my comments on a daily basis were a complete hindrance to the world of Buell, and Erik and I going tooth and nail at one another were not good for anyone looking to enjoy Buell ownership I'm sure. I still have my opinions and they won't change. But I am glad that after 14 years I'm still a Buell owner. I'm still enjoying my Buell and young enough at 52, I was 38 when I bought it, to ride the wheels off it. And yes I'm one of the few idiots that still stands it up on the rear wheel most times when I leave Squires at Sherburn. I'm a bit peed off that I can never actually get to the point where I'm totally finished with the modifications, but as the years pass I am getting it closer to perfection than ever before.

If anyone at BEG can sort my log in details I'd come say hello sometime. And to the person who said some people come and some people go but the Club will always be there. I still have all the UK BEG fanzine papers and I've been around longer than BEG and I'm still around thank you!

sean pepper at gmail dot com if you need me! And yes Bob, I am still doing Saab's in Hull. Amazing isn't it. I'm a Saab, TVR and Buell fan and owner, and they've all gone to the wall. And just like me they've all made a comeback!

My 2001 9-3 went 165k miles before giving up the ghost. No compression in 2 of 4 cylinders (wouldn't idle, but still pulled like a freight train above 4000 RPM). I pulled the valve cover to make sure it wasn't anything obvious like a broken cam chain tensioner, and it wasn't.

I was shopping for repair costs, and looking at $1500 to $2500, and found a 2006 9-3 SE Aero with 45k miles on it for $9000. So off to the scrapper the old 9-3 went.

I miss it though. The 01 9-3 was a Saab that Saab had tried to keep GM from ruining (kind of like Buells under Harley). The new 9-3 is a GM that Saab tried to un-ruin as much as possible. To a large degree they were successful, but I miss the character of that 900 / 9-3 hatchback. Those are special cars.

So any guesses at what would have caused 2 of 4 cylinders to loose compression? It let go all at once, and there was some faint pinging when it went, but nothing dramatic. Afterwards, it turned over fine with no odd noises. At that point I figured it was either a new head or new pistons and didn't have the time to dive into it.

My mom sent me that magazine while I was in boot camp. I was dead set on getting a 2V Ducati until the S1 came about.

Erik gets a little uncomfortable talking about tuber problems. It always seemed like he had bigger things in mind. His true passion (I believe) is in the liquid cooled bikes. Ultimately that's where things were headed. Still, I love my Buell despite the mishaps and quirks. I've rode a lot of bikes through the years, and while some are quite capable and amazing, I wouldn't trade this rattling old Buell for any of them.

So many people (myself included at times) had such ridiculous expectations also. I done blame Erik for trying to be polite, but deep inside being profoundly done with all the whining.

We bought a hot rod sportster put together by an agile group of geniuses with big hairy audacious goals, done with HD money (which desperately helped them) and HD help (which desperately hurt them).

A 100 HP sportster motor direct from the factory? You gotta be kidding me! You can get 30k miles on one of those things between rebuilds? No way, it used to be you were lucky to get two races out of them. I can just order parts any time? I used to have to wait for a precious slot in Wes Brown's schedule if I needed a new head.

And people (myself included) were whining about the fact that the rocker boxes leaked at 9000 miles (in spite of the fact that the factory offered then developed improved gaskets to solve the problem). Geesh, what whimps we were.

I have no regrets about the various mechanical disasters my M2 had. My only regret regarding that bike is the fact that I didn't have the money or garage space to keep it.
