The adult in me now fully grasps the expression "shitballs retarded" in all of its forms, and I'm convinced that I have sacrificed 50 IQ points in a mere two hours.
The 10 year old boy in me is giddy, giggling, and looking for toys to smash together. Best movie ever.
That's kinda what I was hoping it would be... I'll definitely see it. These kinds of movies are great fun when they don't take themselves too seriously.
Like a cold beer on a hot day, or a nice juicy hamburger. Delightful under the right circumstances, regardless of the fact taht it is utterly disposable and unimportant at the end of the day.
I saw WWZ last weekend, and enjoyed it thoroughly as well. I had completely gotten over any expectations that it have any kind of significant relation to the book, so that helped me just appreciate it as another good zombie movie.
Saw this last night in IMAX 3D and I agree 100% with the OP.
I'd also add that you really MUST see this film in IMAX 3D to REALLY get a feel for the "hugeness" of the robots (really, they're NOT robots, they're "mechas") and kaiju.
The ending did feel an AWFUL lot like "Independence Day" though.
Thanks for not completely spoiling it, yet expressing your view. It's kinda hard not to have one of a few cliche endings to these things.
Independence day was a bit over the top, not to mention the bad science, but the triumphal ending is traditional in monster movies.
Or the tragic end of mankind ending, or the dire warning ending, ( The Day The Earth Stood Still... and damn the remake was horrid. ) or the new Eden ending, or.......
Is there a Zombie movie where the lone survivor of the town has the Army move in announcing a cure? After he's killed everyone else? Now that's a ironic ending, and not expected.
I'll have to go see this Kaiju movie. I was going to skip it, but you guys win.
I actually enjoyed the 1998 Godzilla travesty. I like Mathew Brodrick & Jean Reno's acting in it and didn't mind that it wasn't a slavish copy of the 1954 original or the Americanized version with Raymond Burr. Also liked that they mocked the American reporters inability to pronounce Gojira, ( which, I am told is unfair, since it's pronounced Go-dzi-la, per IMDB )
I also didn't think the 1998 movie was profound, life changing, or the best movie ever.
Giant Mecha, while wildly impractical from a military standpoint, are just fun. ( I say this as a former ranked Mechwarrior player )
I liked the "American Godzilla" as long as you didn't think of the creature as "Godzilla." I think the term is "Gino" (Godzilla In Name Only). He was an impressive construct, and it was a fun movie. The only real downside was that they called it "Godzilla."
On the other hand, I am REALLY looking forward to the reboot coming next year from Gareth Edwards! I hope he doesn't disappoint.
Personally, my favorite Kaiju movie of the past decade and a half would have to be "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe." If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.
Speaking of "Sharknado," did you see that Regal Cinemas is going to have a special midnight showing of Sharknado on August 2nd? I mean, they expect people to PAY to see this on the big screen??
On the other hand, maybe they'll get a good "Rocky Horror Picture Show" vibe going. Be better if they served "Adult Beverages" during the showing, I think...
