The other day I needed a new battery for my 1125R in a pinch, so I stopped at a local dealer (not my usual one) to grab it. It was no problem to get the battery, but the guy at the parts counter told me there is a $10 core charge that will be refunded when I bring the dead one back. I have never heard of this before, but it has been a few years since I last bought a HD battery. Anyone here that works for a dealer can confirm if this is nation wide or a dealer trying to make a few more bucks? |

Napa charges $15 for a car battery "core charge." More of an "incentive to bring it here so it will be disposed of properly" charge, methinks. |

Recycling batteries keeps them out of landfill, where heavy metals may leak into the ground water when the battery casing corrodes. |

Not surprised. Even Walmart has a core charge for their law mower batteries. |

Pep Boys charged me a return fee of $10 for a can of R134A refrigerant. They said; it's about waste management... but for an empty can that contained gas, is a bit ridiculous. |

Just like paying a tire disposal fee when you buy new ones |

I found out from my preferred dealer that no, there is no core charge, this is just one shady dealer doing its own thing. They have tried to charge me BS fees before, that is why I don't usually get my stuff from them. I will be returning the battery, then getting it at a different dealer instead. |

Around here, the scrap yard gives you $13.00 for batteries that had a $10.00 core charge. You do the math..... |

I don't plan on getting rid of the battery, hence my issue the surprise scammy core charge. The battery has seen better days, and won't start the bike unless it is fresh off the tender, but I still have other uses for it. Also a tire disposal fee? I've never heard of that either. |

Last battery I got from Sheldons had no core charge and they didn't give me anything for the old one. I had not planned for this. If I had known this beforehand, I too would have kept the older one as it was good enough for the ironhead. As it was I was "smart" and drove the bike that needed the battery to the shop and swapped it out in the lot with no way of carrying a half-dead battery home. They took it off of me for free at least. |

Around these parts, they ask if you want to keep the old tire(for the most part). If you take it, no fee. If not, you pay them to dispose of it(properly). Now that we have a recycling center.... They will accept used tires. You do have a yearly limit though. |

Speaking of core charge(off topic)we have a bottle deposit of 5 cents a bottle in Iowa. I always thought they washed out and reused the beer/pop bottles...........nope,they crush them per color and remelt them into new containers. All beer and pop bottles are brandy new. And on my other hand, when they actually did reuse the bottles, they only had an average of 6 refills before they were worn or damaged. I remember getting some pretty scruffy bottles once in a while.......back in the day......... |

Maybe it's a California thing, but I've paid core charges on every wet cell battery I've ever bought. For that matter... starters, alternators, water pumps, power steering pumps... On the subject of bottles, as a kid we used to go to "The Pop Shoppe" and trade in our bottles for freshly filled ones with all different flavors. I used to love going there to see the bottling in action. Looks like they're still in business too. The Pop Shoppe |

its just that dealer... Also a tire disposal fee? I've never heard of that either. as for that, thats been around since before i even had a license. on every tire ive seen changed. most times it is just figured into the bill though and not listed out as a separate expense. |
