Cool! If you are in that Lebanon campground, you are about a mile from my house. Let me know next time we are in town and we can meet up at Doc's for something deep fried.

Hmmm. WV would be nice.

Snowmobiles are utility vehicles that all look pretty much the same. Motorcycles are a fashion/lifestyle statement to an awful lot of customers. if that were not the case we would still be riding round on 50 year old BSA/Triumphs I suppose.

That may be true in England, but not in the Midwest, NE Coast and all of Canada. We have a true winter where people adorn themselves in logo'd clothing from a mere 4 manufacturers. The style and performance of these machines is reflected in everything they do.

You may be right, that it's a small part of the overall market, but it's large enough that this engine will make it's appearance in their bikes, sleds and possibly other placed down the road. They have done it with many other engines.

PS: at that HP rating, I will pass. The current Apex is over 160hp, so this would be a midrange engine at best. It will be a great bike engine for the money.

I would expect Yamaha would put the motor in other models. Unlike HD with the VROD motor. Yamaha actually has vision.

Trojan,
+1 to Biffdottorq. Sleds are DEFINITELY not utility vehicles in the northern US.
Utility sleds are small sellers here.
Utility sleds are bigger sellers in Canada, and the majority of sales in Scandinavia and rest of Europe (since sold mostly to resorts, as recreational snowmobiling is almost non-existent in Europe).
Spent a few years working at Arctic Cat, and Utility sleds were 1 of the lines that I was chief engineer for. Trust me, I was NOT the mainstream product in my company!

The major snowmobile marques have rabidly loyal customers almost to the HD level.

That Yahama looks nice and is priced right, but I haven't seen it in person or ridden one yet, so that's what is required before I comment on one.

Love the idea, but the design to me is generic and I hate those blue wheels. The whole thing looks cheap, especially the seat.

Interesting related article at Motorcycle Daily- Yamaha says the FZ-09 is "the tip of the iceberg" for new models they plan to introduce:

http://www.motorcycledaily.com/2013/06/yamaha-says -fz-09-is-tip-of-the-iceberg/

If Yamaha is confident enough to do that, it seems to bode well for EBR to introduce their whole range of bikes by the fall.

Don't confuse confidence with desperation on the part of the Japanese manufacturers. Yamaha (and Suzuki) is in a deep hole and needs to try and win back diminishing sales from European manufacturers such as Triumph and BMW. The only way they think they can do that is by 'cloning' models from the Triumph range such as this UJM Street triple clone and subsequent spin offs.

The EBR range is in a completely different market sector than this budget middleweight, so will always sell in small numbers (compared to what Yamaha/Honda would call normal) to enthusiasts and people looking for a more expensive individual bike. If the rumour of a $18K price for the EBR model is correct it certainly won't be competing against any of the MT09 spin offs, but top line Ducati/KTM/BMW teritory.

Based on those pics... Are we going to need more dirt oriented tires than the DRs come stock with?
