This is a place where the longest tread is Jeep Suspension! "
tread? Yeah, probably. Big tires on jeeps will have longer tread (diameter) than our bikes have.

Or did you mean THREAD
wrong there man
its not the longest thread by a long shot (oh, about 60+ pages short of that)

IMO, Danica is a medicore racer at best, but still faster than I. If a male racer had the same record as her, there wouldn't be much hub-bub about it...

There is nothing "stock" about a stock car. Doesn't mean I agree with their rules package.

I used to be a big NASCAR fan, but not so much since Big E was killed at Daytona. The sport has grown far from it's roots. But they must be doing something right because the people are still showing up at the races. Been to an AMA race lately?? Ghost town compared to a NASCAR race...

WHATEVER you are racing, it takes some degree of skill to be successful at it. Luck and $$ also play a role, but there has to be some skill level. $$ does not necessarily buy skill, just ask AMA racer Johny Rock Page...

gotta toss my two pennies in here since I've been goin to Nascar since the late 80's -

Danica grabbed the pole fair and square (she does have a weight advantage but i doubt mark martin or kasey kahne weigh much more)

She is a pretty face but a bit lacking in the chesticle department for my taste

I LOVE okra - shame that batch looks like it was frozen

ALL engines in NASCAR are by RULE pushrod until and unless they change the rule.

The cost of development for a "modern" engine would be huge. The cost to build an engine that can turn 9K plus for hundreds of miles is large enough. I remember when a drag race engine that only ran under load for 10 seconds could not stay together at 8K.

Pushrod motors are well developed and on a mostly equal footing. There is very little actual difference in performance potential between brands, and this is the way it should be.

And I would let her eat crackers in bed.

ALL the engines in Cup are based on the chevy small-block, they just have different heads.

Danica's record is better than a good chunk of the guys she's running against - why no outrage about them?

and for those of you who wonder why we watch oval racing....think of it this way - if you don't do anything but go left for 50 or 60 years, do you think you'd be any good at it?

Ford ran a 429 double overhead cam in the late 60's or early 70's to compete with the Chrysler 426 Hemi. It was all getting out of hand so they had to cut them back to quit killing and maiming drivers. They had giant, unsafe in many ways compared to todays cars, bricks that they were literally flying in. The cars were of many different configurations back then, medium to large factory bodies.

You don't have to buy into the "you have to be a redneck to like NASCAR", unless you are weak of mind yourself. I know some totally anti redneck fans.

"I don't think we would want our street cars to have suspension anywhere near Nascar stuff, would ride like hell."

All they've got to do is soften it up for the street. Not the NASCAR suspension, the race winning suspension they would have developed had they been running real cars instead of roll cages with headlight stickers.

Not knocking NASCAR here, just saying it has changed a lot since its inception, and not for the better, IMHO. This is why I prefer AMA Superbike to a series that is one off customs that you and I can not buy and ride on the street. I don't feel in any way connected to the bikes. Still fun to watch, but if both are on at the same time (right, on the one channel that covers, sometimes, motorcycle racing) I'm watching AMA.

Oh yeah, and rabble rabble rabble. Didn't want to get off topic.

Vern,Ford ran a 427 SOHC motor in the mid 60s.
That and Dodge's soon to be,released 426 DOHC hemi engine were the ones that created the ban on OHC engines.Dodge's cams kept stressing the retaining bolts. The Dodge was referred to as the doomsday engine.it made 750hp/w stock carburetion.

I know about that SOHC, but some where I have a picture of an experimental DOHC that Ford was developing. It went away with the rules change back then.

This fella here, Jim Scott, is a friend of mine who I worked for when I was a teenager. I was in his shop a few years after his ARCA racing was over and he went back to dirt track racing.

What he told me about NASCAR racing at Daytona was how much courage it took to go back out on the track after spinning out and sliding out of control for a half mile at 150 mph. There are no chicken hearts out there.

I have seen Danica wreck really bad into a wall at well over 150, I think it was at Daytona last year. For her to hop into another car the next week to go back racing is earned credit in my book.

To pick an argument in a thread like this is stupid enough to get you an award.....here you go.....

What is happening around here is evolutionary change. Mostly because HD killed our favorite subject and EBR hasn't put one out for us to own to get on board with yet.

So what's really worse? Watching skittles go around turning left, or watching skittles go around a road course single file? Frankly, both get pretty damned boring.

BTW, I had lost most of my interest in NASCAR by this time anyway, but when they split the season so at the end you have the top drivers racing for the cup and everyone else running as spoilers, it just stopped making sense.

If NASCAR had their thumb on the scale, this would be the time. That said, she is driving the best stuff, and her weight would amount to a a little speed. My guess, off the lead lap by lap 50-60.

When I have time I enjoy watching Nascar Sunday races. I watch the first fifty laps and fall into a deep sleep. I nap usually until fifty laps or so from the end of the race. Then I catch up on what happened as they recap the race at the end.

A couple of the guys I raced with back in the early 80's are running WOO Super Late Models. I would rather watch them when they are televised than the pavement pounders.

Unless she has a mechanical problem, crashes out or loses the draft for some other reason, being off the lead lap at Daytona by lap 50-60 is pretty unlikely.

Danica crash, couldn't happen. I'd like to be a fly on the wall in the drivers meeting for the duel race. I bet there will be a buffer around her car of say half a track length. I wouldn't accuse anyone of cheating, but NASCAR will milk this for all it's worth.

Vtpeg, you are right. I was a rear tire changer for IH series in 2005. I was able to sit in on one drivers meeting before a race in Colorado (Pikes Peak Raceway? ), and was exposed to the "rule bending" to allow slower drivers to have a better chance, and handicap the faster ones. There were sizeable differences between the budgets of the rookies and the established teams with big bank accounts. This is why the rules were flexed. To create a more equal opportunity for all drivers to win. To me, it sounded like a bad politician giving a BS speech, but there was a purpose for it. A closer race attracts more fans. Period! It's all about revenue. If one driver is leading by half of a lap, it's nowhere near as fun than seeing three cars duke it out for the tall spot on the podium. Just saying I have seen both sides of it, and it's all about keeping the fans coming back for more. Cheers Y'all!

Remember the dominate Pro-Stock Dodges of the late 80's? nitrous passages cast into the block and heads, NOX tank in the oil-pan. Great until one blew-up on the start and the bottle went rolling down the track. The NHRA suspected it, but it was all about fans and money, Go Daddy!
