Excerpt of what I sent out to family and friends earlier today. . .

"If dogs don't go to heaven, when I die I want to go wherever they went."
- Attributed to Will Rogers

Molson, A Quiet Dignity. . .
(July 1, 1998 – December 8, 2012)

Molson’s hips gave out this week, and he could no longer adequately manipulate his hind legs. Added to this that his stomach has become distended, the assessment from our veterinarian is that it is stomach or splenetic tumors... He stopped eating on Thursday, not a good sign for a dog whose appetite could be best described as “voracious”.

What is compelling to us is that Molson never “verbalized” any pain - - not a whimper, howl, or mournful bark. I’m unsure if he felt pain from what went on internally, but he had “collapsed” several times based on the atrophy of his rear legs. Not one sound, not once; just quietly soldiered on.
. . .
He has been a great dog and has had an excellent life - - been to three different countries (four if you count a plane transfer at Narita), been in 40+ of our States, including Alaska by small boat, logged about 15,000 miles of flight, and has been a steadfast companion for over 14 years . . .

His last responsibility was to be here for my wife as she works through a medical recovery. In my mind, I needed him for 6 more months, but he couldn’t give us that. He was here for her homecoming, and that will have to be enough. I can ask no more of him.

This morning we took him for his last ride. We were with him for over an hour saying our goodbyes at the veterinarian; Molson has passed, and it’s already lonely in the house. Any feelings of grief are tempered by the fact that I do not mourn his passing - - instead I rejoice that he lived, and feel grateful that we were able to share our lives with him. I will miss him severely.

Very sorry to hear about your loss.
We know what it is like.
Molson looks like a beautiful red Golden Retriever
Love the rich red color and white face!
...and i sure love Molson beer!

He looked a lot like ours that we had to put down a couple of years ago. He had hip issues for several years but never seemed to bother him until the fateful day when I came home from work and he would not get up. I had to carry him outside to use the bathroom. For a about few minutes he seem to get around ok, and i thought we are good to go.

After that he could not even move without seriously whining. He must have had some serious nerve pain in his back.
The vet was called to the house within about an hour. He said surgury may fix it but not likely and long recovery at best.

We put him down that night in our living room floor, right were he used to lie all the time next to my PC desk.
Very sad but he is not in any pain anymore!
One year before pic:

About and hour before he passed:

OK, advice needed: I found my newest adopted dog, the Chihuahua mix, digging a hole. For his size, he had dug a pretty big hole before I caught him. It wasn't very close to the fence, but... this just happens to be one of my greatest fears for behavior.

The last thing I want is for my Basenji to learn how to dig... he gets very worked up when another dog walks near the property. I have no doubt he could dig underneath the fence in less than 5 minutes.

What might be the best remedy for this? I'm not gonna be around with the Supersoaker all the time- I dropped a big rock in the hole to discourage him. He seemed to be smell-triggered when I saw him- another bad habit, he likes to roll in stuff. (Luckily there's not much of that AFAIK in the yard.)

Suggestions?

Spread chicken wire on the ground at the fence line. You can cover it with bark, or let the grass grow up around it. It effectively prevents digging as an escape option.

My sister's dogs like to dig up moles. They take turns. It's cute.

Here they are...

Paul,
Real sorry to hear about Molson. We too had our first Golden (Lindsey) for 14 years. He also didn't make a whimper when he got sick.
They are such good loyal dogs. We still miss him.
There is something kind of cool about a Golden that has some years on them. The gray mussel and all, they just look wise..

Molson looked a beautiful dog, and sounded like a very good friend. Sorry to hear of your loss.
I always find it hard that some people don't understand just how important these 'furkids' are in our lives.
My dogs have always played a part in defining who I am. They become a part of the Family.
That you played an equally special part in his, and rejoice his life now he has moved on, says more than any words.
Dog Speed Molson.

Very moving tribute to Molson. I am sorry for your loss, and I thank you. Your tribute made me realize something about Calvin - he, too, never whimpered. Never whined. Never complained. Simply...kept on, head high, until his body gave out.

Molson was 16, it looks like; Calvin, nearly 18. I take comfort in my belief that they know when they have it good...and they stick around as long as they possibly can. When I come home and my girls are wagging and jumping and ecstatic to see me...I know I'm doing something right.

Best wishes for your wife's recovery, too. Molson is still there, keeping an eye on her with you. Molson and Calvin...are family. And, family is forever : )

new kid at the Gainer house.
No name yet.
We are hoping he tells/shows us a good name for himself.
We just don't think Mr. Wormy Butt Sleepy Pup is a good choice

Why dontcha try "Beavis"- I wanted to name our newest pup that, but the GF wouldn't hear of it at all... thing is, he's REALLY lived up to the spirit of THAT name by now...

I said "Bacon"... but he just isn't a "Bacon"
My wife said "Stormy"... I don't care for that..

She was reading names and stopped, said I'm not telling you that one.... I poked and prodded for awhile. "Biscuit"
I thought Biscuit was perfect... my wife does not

The search continues

A name will make itself known.

We had Kelsey (the pug) for nearly six weeks. "Pug" was it. She had horrible gas. 3 lbs of dog could clear a room. One night we're watching "Toy Story" on tv and she let one go while Stinky Pete was on screen. Well...can't very well call a female pug Pete...but his voice is Kelsey Grammar.

Problem solved. Pug named.

This is a pibble that was abused (a nice way to put it) in Lorain, Ohio.
The policeman that received the call to go get him is a Jeep'n buddy of mine that does rescues on the side.
I just thought I would share. I am cheering this little fellow on and thought some of the badweb peeps would like to do the same

Wow...

Mark, thanks for sharing that. Breaks my heart, but it helps to see the good work and progress made by the Humane Society there.

Human nature shows us so much bad, so much evil- in response, we all must seek out and promote the good... let us all do our best towards that end.

Our next names will be easy. Bella, of course, was already named and she seemed to like it so we didn't change it. Boys will be either Spooner or Skippy John Jones, the first is a reference in a Buffet song and the second a kid's book.
Girls will be either Mavis or Janis. The first is a dog reference from the Dead Milkmen and the second is my favorite female singer and muppet.

Good lookin' pup Mark! He looks like a "Tonka". Do you have "sucker" tattooed on your forehead?. As far as Herbie goes I'm pulling for the little guy. How in the hell can someone do that? Whoever let it get that far should suffer the same fate.

Our 17 yr old Collie/Aussie mix passed silently early yesterday morning in the loving arms of my wife. Cobber was her dog, she found him next to a bridge watching traffic go by while we were living in Oregon. She stopped and asked him if he needed a ride, she opened the back door of her Jeep, jumped in and that was that. We have been married for 20 yrs and Cobber seemed to always be there. He was a herder by nature, if we couldn't find the cats, he had them all in a corner. He was never agressive towards them but just kept them in a corner or under a table. The cats were his "sheep!" Then the twins came along, between Cobber and Shelia, my Dane, the boys were very well tended. Shelia and Cobber had some kind of canine sense that they would let us know if one of the boys was sick or had a fever or even needed changing. Shelia would stand watch and Cobber would come get us. In Cobber latter years Cobber would hold court with cats instead of herding them, I think that they were just getting even with him. He hated getting brushed, loved getting his nails done, hated bones, loved ice cubes. He was the boys "Hoover" when they were going through the Cheerio(dry cereal) stage. I will miss walking him early mornings, he was the only dog we had that loved the snow as much as I do.

My wife is kicking around Grady.
I say it should be spelled Gray D or Gray Dee or something to that effect
