That's why I'm "holding out" for it. I'm not even convinced it's real yet.

I'd trade my competition AR-15 for an XBSX right now...

So, I got pulled over in my car the other night driving home from my hockey game because I have a headlight out. It just went out last week and I hadn't had a chance to get it fixed.

And the first question out of the officer's mouth was ... do you have any firearms in the car? I only mention this just because I have been pulled over many, many times and not once have I gotten that question. It just seemed strange.

Will police officers know that you own registered firearms by running your Tag?

If you have a CCW permit, quite possibly. Might have just been a paranoid cop though.

I have been pulled over several times as I have a c c perment my first duty is to tell the officer that I am carrying so far it never gets any further than that as they want to talk pistols and dont ever say why I was pulled over in first place.

I don't have a CC permit.

I have a friend that has one and he told me once that he was pulled over and the officer went nuts when he saw the permit. And this when he wasn't carrying and his entire family was in the car.

Cant speak to where you are Mac, I can only speak for Ohio...

In Ohio, if you have a CCW license, the cop absolutely knows when he pulls you over and runs your tag. He knows the owner of the car has a CCW permit.

In Ohio, you don't "register" firearms. They do a background check at the point of purchase if you buy commercially, but those are supposed to be used only for the background check. Those check records are kept forever though, so at some point it is likely some will be lost, stolen, or misused. But anyway, the responding officer does not know everyone who owns a firearm, they simply know every license plate registered to a CCW holder.

In Ohio, if you are a CCW holder and stopped, you must keep your hands in plain sight from the point the officer starts pulling you over, inform him at your first opportunity that you are a CCW holder and that you are carrying, and comply with his instructions on safely securing your weapon.

I think you will probably bet less grief from a cop as a CCW holder rather than more, unless you did something to escalate a situation. A cop will *always* assume the person he is talking to is armed. When he sees a CCW flag, he still assumes the person is armed, but now knows the person has also undergone a full background check and has no history of felonies or mental illness. So the CCW actually makes a cop feel safer, not more at risk.

The "first question" might be a procedure change (a good one probably). Recently there was (in Ohio I think) a situation where a wound up cop with an attitude stopped somebody (who was probably messing with prostitutes anyway, but hadn't been convicted yet) and was yelling at him from the get go. He was a CCW holder, and tried to inform the officer, but the officer was too busy yelling. It went to court, and I think the cop lost. As he probably should have... he should have remained calm, because he was probably right, and the guy with the hookers should have been busted fair and square...

So I can see a new procedure being rolled out to the cops, to ask the question first and get the response, so that if the CCW holder is carrying and lies, the cops have that clear lie right there on tape and can use it to prosecute them later.

Went to the range with the wife tonight.

She said, if you really think you "need" one, get it.

Rock River Arms, LAR-15, chrome lined barrel. I said ok.

I think she wants a revolver now.

My twins want small frame guns since their hands are so small, both want me to send them to CCW class when they turn 21, with the handgun as a birthday present.

"I'd trade my competition AR-15 for an XBSX right now..."

Xbullet you may want to wait, I fear the value of AR and all like arms will rise drastically in the coming months....

As to the LEO running tags for CCW flags, depends on the State. I'd guess it's relatively few states have that synchronized at this point. Either way, Reep is correct, all well trained LEOs are going to treat every vehicle operator like they have access to a firearm until proven otherwise. One should always act in a manner that reduces the officer's stress during the stop, hands steady in plain view, no distracting actions like reaching into concealed areas while the officer is approaching vehicle or at the window, remain calm, it's just a traffic stop (hopefully, unless you've got other issues then all bets are off). I cannot over stress the remaining calm thing, even if this starts as a high risk stop (at night, maybe after a small pursuit, etc). By not introducing more stress into what maybe a stressful situation you help bring it back to normal. You never know(unless you're running a scanner) what call the officer just returned from, or if your vehicle is similar to a BOLO vehicle, or ? Cops are killed regularly at mere traffic stops by people off their rocker, trust me, all traffic stops are stressful until proven otherwise....don't contribute to it even if the officer comes off like a @#%! at first.

I've always had 'good luck' being pulled over in Ohio with my CCW. The first time the guy actually said he likes talking to CCW holders, gave him a sense of calm or something. The next time the cop was in training. He got all nervous, I was probably the first armed person he's dealt with, but the senior officer stepped in and it was all good. The third time was an extremely odd situation, and I mistakenly didn't announce my CCW permit. I wasn't carrying at the time, but the cop actually joked about it with me. He could tell I was mortified when he mentioned my CCW and I realized I didn't announce. He laughed.

Back on topic, I'd really like to get a new tactical gun. I'm not so much into the big bore so I'd really like to pick up a 9mm Carbine. I have other 9mm guns, the ammo's cheap and plentiful, and I don't have access to any range longer than a 9mm can handle.

i'd recommend looking at the baretta 9mm carbine. some dudes at the club shoot those in carbine class. very nice, very reliable. but pricey : (

the highpoint works really well with the factory ten rounder but stay away from the 15 round mags. so you're stuck with the "low" capacity. (yes i've had one)

another nice thing about the baretta is it takes the pistol mags. and they make some i think are 30 rounds.

There are some definite perks to the Beretta, but the cost factor is going to stick me with the Hipoint.

First priority I think will be a nice gas powered PTP pistol and (basement) shooting range for practice.

Mikef500, if you can find one look into the Marlin Camp Carbine 9mm (aka Camp 9). Very reliable shooter that takes S&W mags. Although prices have been climbing on these.

Back OT to the OP...
Got the last parts for my first assembly of an AR on the way that I started last month. The BCG was the hardest to find!

And to continue the panic buying:

For good measure I got 2 more stripped lowers, Spike's this time. I would have rather had S&W but they were out but about $35 less each.
I normally would not have started another project or bought a new weapon but...

Also I bought ammo for next year that I normally would have waited till Spring (the stuff that I don't re-load). Paid more than I normally do but the supply of what I normally buy was non-existent

Guess my next trip to the store will include ammo purchases, I'm feeling like I'm low on most of it. Less than 2000 rounds total, it's time to restock. At least the .223 and .40 ammo is about the same price.

careful that sounds like an arsenal! lol

if i were betting i'd guess they will enforce another assault rifle ban and/or high capacity ban soon since this latest tragedy. looks like 30-rounders have gone up already.

good call nine, i'm getting a stripper lower tuesday

So after the speech tonight I think it may be time to pull the trigger and buy an AR. My LGS has a S&W M&P 15 for $925, a Windham M4FT for $895, and the Walmart has a Sig Sauer M400 for $900-something. Which would be worth the cost? I've been reading reviews and they all seem to be decent rifles. If anything I'd rather support the guy at the local store, because he answered a bunch of my questions about reloading the other day, and I appreciate his time. That being said, I'm not willing to pay more than $50 or so bucks for his time, so if he's jacked the price of the Smith or the Windham by more than $50 it's not worth it.

One other thing - if I get the Smith, I can get a $100 rebate from S&W, so it's actually $825 after the mail-in rebate.

I actually wanted to get a Garand, (it's supposed to be my Christmas present from my wife) but the store doesn't have any good WWII-era rifles, and I really only want it for the history, not for the shooting so much.

S&W of those choices.
Definitely, not on the Windham
Sig is the 2nd choice.

But, out of all of them,
there are better choices for a little more money.

How much ammo are you going to use over a year?
How many rnds. on your first outing?
200?
That will be about $80 of ammo.

Not too concerned with the ammo cost. I've been shooting a bunch lately, and just bought another pistol so I've been breaking it in. I figure I'll blow through about 200 rounds initially and then 100 a month average after that.

Why not the Windham? And what are better choices for a little more money?

Thanks.

Windham was high on the list for me, maybe 3rd. I had RRA at the top, then either the colt or windham (tossup between those) and I looked at the sig from the first page just because it was there at walmart at the time.

Check the info on who builds what before you put one off to the side.

If you've got a Cabela's near by, check ammo prices there too, they've been running the occasional sale here, walmart is also pretty reasonable on 100 round packs.

Well, guns sales are extremely brisk by me.

Friday was nuts, we sold 60 guns, 20 of which were AR's.

Saturday was even more crazy. We sold 106 guns, 34 were AR's. Personally, I sold 5.

Sunday was Packer sunday so sales weren't as steady, but we still managed to sell 9 AR's, I sold 3.

We are completely sold out of all bulk .223 and .556 ammo. All we have left is 20 round boxes. We sold 15 2000 round boxes, 12 300 round boxes, 20 200 round boxes and 34 100 round boxes.

The supply of guns isn't an issue, the ammo is.

Went to the LGS after work and the S&W was sold, and the Windham had a fixed front sight post which I don't want. So I called Cabelas and they said they had a few S&Ws still. I drove down there, got a number, and waited in line for an hour. By the time I got to the front of the line they were out of the Smiths. So I will try again later. I have time off after Christmas, so I think I'll head back there then.

picked up a stripped m&p lower. now i may have a "pre ban" lower lol

cool thing is that it's classified as "other". so i can build a pistol or long gun. didn't know that (first stripped lower i've had)

Bought 4 30 round pmags this morning. That gives me 12. I think that should be enough.

Now I'm trying to decide if I should pick up some more mags for my pistols. I have three for each pistol.

Man you guys do a good job of making me feel ill-prepared.

I did stop by a range on Sunday and get some time in with my pistols. They had a used Hi Point Carbine there for a good price, but I think I'll pay the extra to get the newer skeleton stock and rails.
