How many of you old farts are still playing with RC cars?

After much deliberation, I have pulled the trigger on the latest iteration of the Traxxas Summit.

Front and rear remote locking differentials, remote switching hi-lo transmission, pushrod suspension and dual LiPo batteries, LED lights, bells and whistles all included.

It will arrive on Friday, and my wife is making me put it under the tree, but I'll be allowed to get the batteries and chargers out of the box so I can have those ready for Christmas morning.

I see a bright future of modifications!!! Until then, I'll have to be content running my brushless modified Team Losi Mini-T.

What are you guys playing with?

I've been wanting one for a while, but I'm leaning towards a rock crawler...

I was really on the fence for the last two weeks, between this truck and the Axial Wraith.

Thing is, by the time I got the wraith to where I wanted it, I'd be $1000 deep into the project. This truck, for under $700, is only lacking the brushless motor.

I really like the scale accuracy of models like the Wraith, but at the end of the day, the Summit has SO.... MANY.... FEATURES.... already included.

That Summit looks & sounds like it will be very cool!

I (at 48) still play with toys too. I haven't done anything with my cars the last few years though as what little time I make for RC has been spent teaching myself to fly with my Hobby Zone Super Cub, and I've had a blast with that. It's almost time to put the skis on it as we should be getting snow here soon.

My wife & I have a few different cars/trucks/buggies, mostly Tamiya. I have an original Sand Scorcher that I bought in 1980, and I can't remember the model names but she has a 2wd buggy and I have a 2wd stadium truck. We also have 1/10 Formula 1 cars, and the Kyosho Mini Z F1 cars (1/27 I think?)

We live near Team CRC and they have a dirt track out back so I've considered getting into 4wd nitro buggies but haven't pulled the trigger yet. They have a carpet track inside also and we considered trying their 1/12 racers, but WOW those drivers have awesome eye-hand coordination and I think I would just be in the way!

not trying to be a jerk - but whats the point of headlights (led) on a RC car? Seems like a useless add-on that just raises the cost that much more

Same reason there's windows, it's a model. Adds to the authenticity.

I used to race R/Cs while overseas. Haven't touched one in years. My favorite was a 4WD from Hyrobo. For the money, I'm thinking used racing go-kart and a short dirt track in my backyard.

I've got a couple of old Tamiya models gathering dust at my mother's house. Won a few trophies back in the day. Mom was also delighted I found a hobby that didn't put my life in danger.

Unfortunately, the races were always on Sundays (when my buddies were out riding their motorcycles) so it only lasted a year...

I have a toyota high lux kit that took me 25 housr to build and paint. It has 4 wheel steering and 4 wheel drive and a 3 speed transmission i can manually shift from my controller. It was like $700 but i got it on closeout for $400. I also have 3 remote helicopters. 2 are electric and 1 is gas powered! I totally destroyed the neighbors landscaping with the truck. They have lots of wood mulch and rocks to climb over. The choppers are a handful to operate but i was trained by a neighbor to fly them properly.

6gears,

My next truck will likely be a Wraith. I'd love to see some pictures of your trucks, my brother has the Honcho, and I had a lot of fun playing with it when I last visited him.

I literally agonized for weeks over the choice between the Summit and the Wraith. At the end of the day, I wanted something a little more versatile and all-inclusive for this purchase.

2 totally different types of RC really. The traxxis is nice, but not my style. My current beater...my original AX10 has a top speed of about 6 MPH. I have been looking at a wraith, just started getting back into bowhunting so I am cutting back on my "fun" funds for RC. I had a Honcho and an original ax10 RTR for a while and got rid of them. Now have an ax10 with lots of little upgrades on it. I am getting ready for a tube chassis for it...it is on my christmas list anyway. Here is a link to the new addition, hopefully.

Nice...

Next year's Christmas list is already being formulated, and when I zero in on the rock crawling niche specifically I'll be going big.... 1/5 scale, starting with something along these lines:

Nice stuff there. I prefer stuff a little more realistic and love a "shafty" for crawling. They act very scale like when you put them in a bind with torque steer, etc.

I've had a couple nice nitros. I currently have a nice 1/12 mini electric onroader and a 1/16th chinese nitro buggy. The first is very sensitive to chassis set-up and is a chore to get to go straight. I hopped it up and it eats tires and axles. The latter eats pinions and isn't particularly fast. Both of them are broke more than they are working.

When I was racing, THIS was the car to beat. What's the "hot model" now?

Jaimec...I used to STOMP those things with a custom built (by me) Kyosho Ultima mid. I used some parts from an Optima mid and built a 2wd with awesome weight balance. Never had much trouble dusting the RC10s. I honestly don't know what a good buggy is now...been out of racing too long.

There was another model (Japanese) that used to share wins with the RC10, but the name escapes me at the moment. All I know was that it WASN'T Tamiya. Was it Kyosho? Could be. It's been so long...
