Yeah, I'm trying to figure out what kind of contraption has a connecting rod with two big ends. The square thing on the floor looks like it slides up & down on something but just what the heck does it do?

No backstory yet, I found it on another site, it appears to be off a large cargo ship.

It's a crosshead. Big engines have a cross head just like steam engines used to. The piston rod connects from the piston to the crosshead; the rod seen above connects from the crosshead to the crankshaft. The engine in this pic is upside down, but you'll get the idea:

That's going to cost a few bucks to fix.

I haven't seen anything that made me do a double-take in quite a while. Looks like something stopped, and something kept moving : )

I bet it "finally stopped making that clunking noise".

Perhaps water locked up the one jug that failed while the others worked together to mess up the rod?

If this is the same engine....I used to have a picture that had 4 guys standing on top of the piston looking at the cylinder walls! LOL. Let me see if I can find it.

Here is a link, but still can't find the picture I am thinking about though. It is a 2 stroke that makes 109,000 HP.

I'm assuming the rod is the least of all the damage. With a bend like that, the cylinder and block have to be destroyed too?

We all think of 102 RPM as being VERY slow, but even at that speed the crank is making 1.7 revolutions per second. So in one second, that monster rod/crosshead/piston assembly in the photo above would have gone full stroke top to bottom, full stroke bottom to top, full stroke top to bottom, and ~1/2 way back down on another stroke.

Can you fathom the jolt/noise that thing made when whatever failed?

It's the same noise a stack of money makes when you light it on fire.

At full load, a 14 cylinder engine will use over 4300 gallons an hour!

Does anybody have the federal-mogul part number for the rod bearings?

Those bearing cap bolts must be torqued in "YARD TONS". I wonder what rpm an engine like that turns at working speed?

The wikipedia link claims 22 to 102 RPM.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%A4rtsil%C3%A4-Su lzer_RTA96-C#Technical_data_.28as_of_2008.29

I think the picture way at the top is what happens when you hit 120 RPM!

"Nah mate, that's not under warranty, operator abuse, you must have over-revved it.
I can put a claim in to head office for you but I know what they'll say.
Those rods are on back order too & you'll have to pay up front, of course we'll reimburse you if the claim does go through."

Looks like that site has some obnoxious scrips running that forwards you to the main page.
The article I was attempting to sent you children is under the "horror stories" heading and "test bed smash"
