It's a PIGEON.

How about we let them go unchecked and not shoot them so they can crap on EVERYTHING. I guess people have their hobbies but sheesh.

I saw this yesterday and was doing a little research on legality.

There is an interesting middle ground here... air rights over property aren't infinite... as a general rule if its more than 500 feet high then aircraft can freely navigate it.

*But* that is regulated by the FAA, so you have to be FAA certified to operate there, which these unmanned vehicles aren't.

*And* you have various privacy protection and anti-voyerism laws that you could absolutely run afoul of.

*And* you can use your property in your own way (for example build a large building), and if it interferes with overflights, that's not your problem (in most cases).

And in at least one court case a downed model aircraft *did* have to be returned to the owner, but in pieces in a box (presumably with a big FU in black sharpie on top of it).

So the lesson here, if you want to do this, is probably bring one skeet clay with you while you are walking your property with the loaded 12 gauge. Toss the skeet in front of the UAV and fire.

Or go with the commentators on that article... "Wow, that thing looks *just* like a pigeon!".

Wonder if the hunting club could design/fly one of their own drones and accidently ram into the shark drone. wink. wink.

Why do they care about pigeon shoots? They are rats with wings.

I say up the ammo size to a 50 cal and let them try and find the pieces.

The Pigeon: A non native invasive species originally imported to the Americas for food and messenger service in the 1600s. You'd think the greenies would be all for the eradication of this vermin.

If it was over 500 feet, and was hit with a single rifle shot as claimed, that's one heck of a shot. Beyond that, hitting both the camera and control systems with a single bullet starts to bring up questions of magic bullet theories.

Far more likely, it was hit with a shotgun, that you would expect to find at a pigeon shoot. I'd have to look into it a bit, but will a shot gun with bird shot even reach 500 feet high with enough energy to blast things apart? I really don't know the answer to that.

I'm guessing that it was flying low and hit with bird shot. Or it may have been assassinated with and automatic assault rifle.

In many states, there are statutes forbidding interference with legal hunting activities. I wonder if this comes into play here? (Good shot)

After further thought, I'd have to say: too bad - you shouldn't have been flying yer gizmo over the hot zone in the first place, you whiner.

Pigeon loads for a shotgun wouldn't hardly reach it at 500 feet..but 00 buck shot would! A 22 rifle would take it out, especially if it was hovering. Maybe a lucky shot to actually hit a vital.
Take your box of busted copter parts and go home and do something more productive........./

Only possible problem I see is the firing of a rifle into the air...
Otherwise, good shooting.

Bird shot is good out to about 50 yards. Buck (no idea why they'd be using that) gets maybe 100 yards. Not sure if you've done the math but we're WAY under 500 feet, here.

And in fact if it is 50 yards, that is probably close enough to argue that you felt the trespassing vehicle represented a threat and was interfering with your use of your property.

I'd also be training the pigeons to go Crap all over Mr Hindi's car.

Is jamming equipment legal? Sounds like they'd run afoul of FCC part B rules. I only mention it because these animal rights people are lawyered up really well. Best stick to legal means of defending your property. Shoot 'em.

Local range has a long row of trap and skeet houses.... on the OTHER side of the property is the sporting clays range, pointing back at the trap range. The no mans land in the middle is where all the pellets fall, and they have a strict rule of no shot bigger than 6 1/2. They have both calculated, and proven by experiment, that the shot lands safely in the middle. Buck would make it all the way, since clays are often shot at near 45 degrees. ( maximum range, typically for ballistic projectiles )

500 feet up? Birdshot isn't going to be a reliable drone killer at that altitude, ( though some few pellets might make it that high.) Buck, from #4 to 000 might reach high enough, and still be "safe" as far as pellets going off range, depending on the size & shape of the property. ( bird shot at the low, about to fall down, max altitude velocities is unlikely to do much damage also )

A ,22LR is likely to travel too far for safety, so anything bigger is going to be even more unsafe for neighbors. But if you've got 3-5 miles radius around the club...... ( which is possible at some ranges out west )

I'm betting on Buckshot. And the SHARK people flying so low it is a clear violation of private property.

Needless to say, I have no sympathy for self righteous a--holes that wreck other peoples fun.

I have nearly zero sympathy for well funded anti hunting, anti meat, anti human groups.

If you want to eat tofu and Kale... be my guest. You want to tell me how healthy it is, be my guest. You want to throw red paint on me because I've got my leather jacket on? Be prepared to spread some other red paint in return. Assault is assault.

And finally... yes, flying rats are flying rats.

One of the most inspirational sights I've ever seen was in Downtown Rochester, right next to the "Liberty Pole" ( in a central city micro-mini park often used for political rallies created in otherwise useless space at a triangle intersection ) where I watched a pigeon rise, and get nailed in midair by a Peregrine Falcon that hit and pulled up hard, dragging it's lunch up to a 6th floor window ledge.

Less inspirational, but making me laugh like a loon, was the lunch crowd on the sidewalk below that ran screaming as bones & blood splattered down on them.

Awesome flier. Sloppy eater.

monitor his radio purchase higher power unit and return the drone back to his location at Hi speed and as they say RIGHT BACK AT YOU !

We have some rc chopper pilots here that could take out his drone in a flash.

DAMHIK this is going to open all sorts of issues.

IMHO. Bad move on the pilot.

@Kenm123t I have the same aircraft. You can't simply over power the control.

He mentioned he activated "come home" after he heard a shot. I'm guessing he was not even "piloting it." It has a GPS navigation system. It can fly a route.
