property taxes are HIGH as hell in PR..cool place but rent, leasing and owning are expensive in decent areas Learn to speak spanish. Most speak english, but as a second language | ||

@Glitch: Agreed! Funny thing is Churchill was half American.(Which makes him completely American per your birth laws etc') I think the Mau Mau stuff had a lot to do with his feelings towards Britain. My father served in Kenya during that time but has never said anything about it to anyone I know. Chris C | ||

We have two guys that work at our shop that are from PR. One is a dyed in the wool American, former Ranger with 2 tours in the sandbox. The other one is a dedicated believer in independence. They both admit they are HERE because of the cost of living in PR. | ||

I do believe that this time around PR voted yes for change and the majority of the yes votes went for statehood. Its up to congress now, see what they do with it. | ||

In a separate question, 61% chose statehood as the alternative, compared with 33 percent for the semi-autonomous "sovereign free association" and 6 percent for outright independence. | ||

For years PR has been stuck between staying like they are now and becoming a state. Very few Puerto Ricans want total independence from the US. The biggest problem in the past has been the culture and language difference between this former Spanish colony and the former English colonies up north. But now since Latinos are the fastest growing minority and Spanish culture is part of just about every state of the union, it may be time. | ||

Just_ziptab, That's 60. I keep correcting people on that one, but it doesn't seem to stick. Short form from the Prez.. "campaigned in...57 states, 1 to go, and they wouldn't let him campaign in Alaska and Hawaii." That's 60. ( it was also a joke, but since his followers don't have that good a sense of humor, few laughed. ) Just wanted to correct a misperception. Fairs fair. BTW the Brits are busy in Iraq destroying poison gas shells. Not saying nothin, just saying. I have no idea how the Puerto Ricans are going to go on on the State issue. Perhaps they'll put in an escape clause like Texas did, so they can leave if they want to? |
