We've done this topic before, but I've just about finished my beach cruiser.
Looking for a suitable bullet tail light currently. Had the rear wheel re-spoked for better gutter hopping ability. Painted the front.
The balloon tyres are 24x3 so it has roughly the same dia. as 26" wheel.
I'd like to get the Electra frame and start from scratch. Do it with 8 speed chain gears, front and rear discs and probably go for a 26" front wheel and mountain bike forks with some suspension with gaiters.
Toying with the idea of going to the 8 speed hub on this one, but the performance of the drum brakes probably would need upgrading as well.
I have a nice Mountain Bike too, but I much prefer the cruiser for around here and exercising the dawg.
I bought a '09 Lefty 29er this summer. I went back and forth on getting a 29er, it's got pros and cons vs a 26 mtb. But it was a sweet deal and I'm pretty happy with it. Fast, unique, innovative, and made in the USA... just like my other two-wheeled rides.
The 29er feels bigger and less nimble than my 26. It rolls over terrain easier and has more grip though. It just takes a little getting used to. I think on flat and uphill I'm faster on the 29 but going downhill through tight sections I'm faster on a 26, and faster still on a full suspension 26. I want to be a eventually add a 26" or 650b full suspension lefty to the stable. That front end is so light and responsive, I'm a believer now.

29s are also not as strong of a wheel for a given weight. More weight near the outer edge of the wheel also means slower acceleration. Fewer tire choices too. They also force a longer wheelbase.
All that to roll over terrain easier? Some find it worthwhile. I'll leave it at that.

Schwalbe makes gum tires in your size... My new job is 8 miles away, vs. 27 for my old one. I'll be picking up a Giant Escape City for commuting. In the spring, a Surly Ogre will be in the garage.
