I'm afraid you're right Pete(Redbuelljunkie), when one of my favorite cable sports channels for fishing, hunting and many great outdoor programs got bought out by NBC sports they dropped 90% of those programs in favor of more viewed sports like football, soccer & skiing. A viewer $$$ driven business and a shame indeed.
The problems started when Speed Channel dropped Motorcyclist TV and the other motorcycle related shows on Tuesday nights. How many of you remember that?
My guess is you'll still see some of the more non mainstream racing such as motorcycle road racing, motocross, sports cars, WoO, dirt late models etc, but you'll probably need to set your dvr to actually see them. We'll see.
As much as we don't like to hear it, there simply isn't that much of a public following of motorcycle racing.
It's an easy equation. Revenue generated by commercial sales minus cost of production. Of the number is negative or zero, game over.
Even on Speed the races we wanted to see weren't broadcast live or even at a decent time. They aired the races when other network were filling the air with reruns of Lucille Ball.
From the article: "...people familiar with the matter said the company will convert its niche sports channel called SPEED into a broad-based sports network.
Besides baseball, Fox will also put NASCAR racing, college football, soccer and Ultimate Fighting on its cable channel"
I got sick of paying to watch commercials on hundreds of worthless channels.
We gave up satellite TV 2 years ago. I don't miss it. I subscribe to MotoGP.com and watch WSB on Wiziwig. We watch Netflix with no commercials for a fraction of the price!
We go to my sons and watch cable and there is still nothing on, except the commercials.
I suspect that, since the bleachers are usually not full at the track, the lack of TV coverage will mean that sponsorship will wane, and MC racing as we know it will no longer exist.
Friday I went to my local Best Buy to look for an inexpensive old school "stereo" set up for my garage. Need something to play the radio, albums, cassette tapes, and CD's. Two hours later we got it figured out but had to order stuff like the tape deck. I thought it interesting that there was only one turn table available that actually just played the album through a receiver and speakers rather than burn it into a digital format or route it through a computer. This purchase must place me on the cutting edge of outdated technology. I feel so spry I'm going to go ahead and order the tennis balls for my walker now.
Hoot, I see your point, but I wonder about the actual reality.
Almost all races are broadcast at 1am on speed.
So, using the following assumptions: 1) The people watching these races are mostly those that are going out of their way to find them wherever they are (as opposed to a "speed network fan" or a channel surfer.
2) Most people watching these races have a DVR and know how to use it.
3) Most people who has a DVR and knows how to use it can also probably go to www.amaracing.com and click a "watch now" link and watch the video.
4) Advertisers are paying for airtime and eyeballs, not to "be on speed TV".
5) Speed TV requires cable, and requires in many cases an "upper" cable tier. So lots of people are cut off before they can even get to it.
So given all that, perhaps the people you loose by not being on speed would be more than made up for by the people that would now have access to it.
That being said, I'd love to be able to take the kids and some of their friends up to BW3's and get chicken wings and watch a 3pm saturday AMA superbike race cheering on EBR and generally yelling at the TV and making a scene...
The racing is really good. There is good money to be made there. Fox ought to be able to sell this well enough to run it live.
"This purchase must place me on the cutting edge of outdated technology. I feel so spry I'm going to go ahead and order the tennis balls for my walker now."
Buddy, you'd appreciate MY old junkpile of a hi-fi...
But seriously, why bother with Best Buy? You really need to hit all the pawn shops around, mebbe CL. Don't blow more $$$ than you need!
You know, I was surprised, went to Best Buy just to look around (after having looked on line and a visit to Radio Shack) and the prices were pretty good plus they were running a special with most items 40% off. Was also able to get everything but the tape deck and speakers at another 20% discount because they were unused returns. Tack on a frequent buyers discount that we signed up for and used during the purchase and I was happy. Sony turn table ended up to be $52 including tax. So like I said, surprised at the BB experience. Besides, my mom won't let me go back to the pawnshop anymore after what happened last time.
