You shouldn't even be allowed to acknowledge a child's parents. It's discriminatory to orphans!

Their state law already banned any gender specific events, someone just pointed it out.
The school should just have a parent-student dance to replace it.
But it makes a great little story for everyone to get upset about.

Their state law failed to contain the same wording as the federal law, and a nit picking single mother got the ACLU to sue the school. This is the kind of thing the ACLU does all the time. Find loopholes, find flawed phrasing, and exploit them to the detriment of society.

ACLU didn't sue, they sent a letter after receiving a complaint from a parent. The school checked and discovered that the dances were not allowed under the letter of the state law and canceled them.
Just saying...

There's not much information in the article. Maybe if the school had let the girl attend the dance with her mother nothing would have happened and no one would care.

But lets just assume the mother is a complete unholy bitch seeking only to destroy the community by preventing fathers and daughters from dancing, eventually turning it into a Sodom like bastion of sin to welcome the rise of the antichrist.
Family Values! Country's Going Down The Toilet! ACLU Meddlers!.... RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!

Curtis i think you're right as the article or perhaps another one i read about it stated the school refused the girl and her mother the ability to attend.

question i have is what if she had been a single mom? would they have still refused her?

You can exaggerate with the best of them Curtis.

The ACLU's record can not be denied.

They have filed suit against the state of Georgia because the state denied a permit to the KKK to adopt a highway. Never mind that the stretch of road they wanted to adopt is an interstate and isn't eligible for adoption under state law. Or that the state law says the adopt a highway program is for civic groups in good standing with the community. The local KKK chapter is not in good standing with the community. The ACLU exists to poke America in the eye with a stick.

"question i have is what if she had been a single mom? would they have still refused her?"

She is a single mother, according to the article.

Just hate it when people jump all over some story like this when there is barely any information on it.

Here's a link to the letters from the ACLU and the school. http://news.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/20 12/09/19/ACLU.%20Letters.pdf

Seems the school in the past did allow mothers to the daddy-daughter dance type events but changed things this year. The mother tried to convince them to make it inclusive as in the past and was eventually told she and other women could attend. But by then I guess she had already notified the ACLU. The ACLU is a bit of a dick (I've never denied that) so they send their complaint anyway.
The school decided to play it safe by sending a letter out to inform the parents and committies that plan these events to not exclude students or parents from any events due to gender.

So it seems like the school can continue to have the same Father-Daughter Dances that they always have had before as long as they continue to allow all students and parents to attend... as the did before.

The parent was reasonable
The school was reasonable
The ACLU was a bit of a dick as usual but not unreasonable.
Seems like no big deal, but hasn't stopped people from politicizing it.

No politics involved. Just saying the ACLU sucks. We appear to agree.

No, you had it right. They weren't allowing mothers to this event, but they had allowed mothers to previous events of this type.
The mother complained and the school corrected the matter but not before the ACLU had been contacted.

I think the point is that the mother was unhappy because she couldn't attend but is completely satisfied now that no one can attend.

This day and age where over half the kids are born out of wedlock means that father/mother/son/daughter events are going to exclude a lot of people. Hmmm, maybe I can get a gig where I dress up as a faceless man and take girls to dances as an anonymous sperm donor.

That's a pretty big assumption, not sure how you came to that point.
Because of her actions everyone was allowed to attend.
The headlines read that they've "Banned Father-Daughter Dances." But according to the law they're still allowed to hold the events as they have in the past, without gender exclusion. That's actually what the school did.
I think it's safer to assume that she only wanted them to continue to allow that, not to stop them all together.
