I cut out just the "math" side and put it over my desk. I think I may turn it into a bumper sticker as well.

I should find who created it so they get credit.

Very cool that Mr. McMurray was involved!

Agree. I asked him when we were up their Saturday what he'd say if Paul Ryan's advance team were to show up and ask if Mr. Ryan could do a photo op there. "Would you accept?"

"Heck, yeah!" he replied with a grin.

"Cool beans," I said. I told him that we were donating members of the R&R election team and that I had sent an e-mail to the Romney campaign on Friday, suggesting that Mr. Ryan make a campaign stop in Radford and say thanks to Chris and Kelly for standing up so courageously for their beliefs. We all chuckled at the thought, and ever since I haven't been able to shake away the idea of how cool something like this would be, and what a positive message it would send to America.

This is really, really cool. We're thinking of riding back up there again on Saturday; this time we want Chris' autograph, too. : )

America, it's time for some R&R.

Who Is Paul Ryan?
By John Stossel, August 22, 2012

I wanted to like Paul Ryan.

Before he was nationally known, Rep. Ryan visited me at ABC, and we went to lunch. He was terrific. He was a rare politician, one who actually cared about America's coming debt crisis and the unfairness of entitlements. He even talked about F.A. Hayek's "The Road to Serfdom"! If only more politicians thought that way.

But then the housing bubble burst. Ryan voted for TARP. Then he voted for the auto bailout. Who is this guy? I thought he believed in markets!

At Fox, when I got my own TV show, I asked him about that.

WaPo/ABC Poll: Seniors Love Paul Ryan
By John Nolte, Aug 22, 2012

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows 41 percent of Americans view the new GOP vice presidential nominee favorably, while 37 percent rate him unfavorably — slightly improved from last week’s polling.

Among seniors, though, the numbers are even better for Ryan: 50 percent favorable and 35 percent unfavorable. Fully one-third of seniors say they have a strongly favorable view of the Wisconsin congressman, while one-quarter have a strongly unfavorable view.

The numbers suggest Democrats’ attempts to turn Ryan’s Medicare proposal against the GOP haven’t stuck yet among the most pivotal group: seniors. If a Medicare attack was working, after all, seniors would likely be the first group to start deserting Ryan. …

Democrats initially hailed Ryan’s selection as a game-changer in senior-heavy districts and states like Florida, and they’ve been pushing hard the message that it would “end Medicare as we know it” and could lead to an additional $6,000 in out-of-pocket costs for seniors (without specifying that it’s future seniors, of course).

In other words, despite a non-stop demonizing campaign, Ryan is four-points above water overall and doing remarkably well with seniors.

First impressions of your VP pick are everything and from the looks of it, Team Romney's managing of Ryan and Ryan's own impressive qualities have passed a crucial first test.

BTW, only 4 Iowa-class battleships were built, 2 North Carolina-class and 4 South Dakota-class - hardly one a week.

Given that they were intended for a single use (not a single purpose...a single use) the speed at which they were built isn't really relevant when discussing the merits of the government's tax funded extra-governmental activities and their long lasting benefits. Oh, and these were military craft, funded well within the confines of the constitution. Something about raising and maintaining an army and a navy.

The Myths and Realities of the Ryan Medicare Plan
Andrew G. Biggs | Yahoo! Finance, Aug 23, 2012

Gov. Mitt Romney's selection of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate has turned the 2012 presidential election into a referendum on Medicare reform. Ryan has sponsored multiple Medicare reform bills in Congress, with the Left charging that the Romney-Ryan ticket would "gut Medicare" by turning it into a "voucher system," and even "ending Medicare as we know it." Moreover, President Obama's supporters say, the Romney-Ryan approach would force seniors to pay an extra $6,400 per year toward their Medicare costs. But would Ryan and Romney's reform ideas, known as "premium support," really do all of these terrifying things? ...

...Does Paul Ryan's premium support plan "end Medicare as we know it," as President Obama claims? Perhaps, but Medicare as we know it is both inefficient and insolvent. But claims that it "guts Medicare" or turns it into a voucher system don't hold up to scrutiny.

If there is anyone who gutted Medicare and put seniors at risk it is President Obama, who reduced Medicare funding by over $700 billion to fund the Obamacare plan. As a result of these cuts, Medicare actuaries warn, seniors may lose access to doctors and hospitals. The Romney-Ryan premium support model is not perfect -- no plan can fix Medicare's multi-trillion dollar deficits without difficult tradeoffs. But Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have at least proposed a solution, one which could reduce costs and improve quality to put Medicare on a more sustainable track. President Obama has offered no counterproposal. In contest for the country's No.1 leadership position, that alone should be important to voters.

Completely off topic... The Liberty Ships were modular and the parts built all over. One Company that made Boilers for them was Foster Wheeler of Dansville NY.

I took a class from one of the old timers from there, and he told me they tested a Liberty Ship Boiler and it got a crack. While in peacetime they would have torn it down and rebuilt it, in wartime, for a Liberty Ship ( not really meant for just one trip, but many only did a few before being sunk ) they just welded a patch on the crack, and off it went.

That Liberty ship was sunk in shallow water in the Pacific. The Japanese raised it, and found the boiler was more advanced than their own, so they copied it for a new Cruiser class. Patch and all. Every Cruiser in that class had the patch, same size same place.

Back to the subject.

All with government money gathered at much higher tax rates than now.

The tax rate people are happy with depends a lot on what good they think it does. In WW2 the good was pretty obvious. Fascist Dictators wanted to enslave us.

The early part of the war, when the US military was small, badly equipped, and not very well trained, had us getting our butts kicked pretty bad.

( yes, there were exceptions. Some of those exceptions saved us from having to learn German, or japanese West of the Rockies....... The F4F and Marine & Navy Air come to mind. )

We got better at it. In large part, and the reason we won the war, because private industry had developed, and continued to develop, mass production technology that let us swamp the enemy with our products.

Yes, they were products purchased with tax money. So is the asphalt in the road, and the F-16's watching your skies.

Bear in mind that while the government contracted Boeing to build B-17's, and had input in the modifications they wanted, ( not always good input.. ) the Government didn't design the B-17. Or F4U, or P-51, etc. Private industry did. And yes, they built them to make money. Duh.

Enough of WW2. The American Revolution had people revolting about a tiny, 2% tax. 2%????? War?

It was considered unfair, and torqued people off, because it was arbitrary, designed to soak the Colonies to feed the Empire's machine, and we had no say in the tax. Peasants, you know. Ungrateful wretches. They said lots worse about us, in London. In speeches and the papers.

Barack Obama raised taxes, mostly on the poor, a lot. Priced Cigarettes lately?

Now, after lies that only the rich got a tax break under Bush ( Bush the Younger is the reason many people pay no federal income tax. Bush tax cuts. ) the envy and hatred crowd want to "save the Bush tax cuts... but only for the middle class."

7 years of "worst economy since the Great Depression", and now that it IS... nothing.

How many times can you hear someone lie before you stop believing them?

The editorial in today's San Diego Union is encouraging. It is perfectly OK for Independents and Democrats to vote for Romney.

(All bold formatting below is done by me).

It is Mitt Romney’s time

The storm called Isaac permitting, the Republican National Convention will open in Florida’s Gulf Coast city of Tampa on Monday to formally nominate Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Paul Ryan of Wisconsin for president and vice president.

The critics (Democrats) and the jaundiced hordes (much of the media) say the news from the convention begins and ends there. And that is not without at least some justification. National political conventions have been largely devoid of unscripted drama since 1980 when Ronald Reagan, who had not yet named his vice presidential running mate going into the convention, seriously considered choosing former President Gerald Ford as a sort of “co-president” before the negotiations collapsed and Reagan settled on George H.W. Bush.

To be sure, the media will try, as it already has, to drum up news with big stories of big controversy, most probably regarding division among Republicans over the GOP platform. But the reality is the platform has already been written and blessed, the fighting over it was pretty tame, it will be adopted without audible dissent and then ignored by everyone for another four years. You might recall the 1996 Republican Convention in San Diego when, in a moment of uncommon political candor regarding the platform fight at that time, presidential nominee Bob Dole famously told Copley News Service reporters writing for this newspaper on the eve of the convention that he had not even read the party platform and would not feel bound by it if he did. So much for that big story.

The incumbent presidency of Barack Obama is a failure. The challenge at this convention is to effectively tell that story. It should not be difficult; there is plenty of material, beginning with Friday’s figures showing the number of people applying for first-time unemployment benefits rising yet again the previous week.

Obama has not just failed in economic policy. The Obamacare health reform is a sham. American and NATO troops in Afghanistan are dying at a tragically record pace. Iraq grows increasingly unstable. The president seems almost indifferent to the plight of Israel. Gas prices at home are skyrocketing. Environmental radicals seem to be in charge of energy policy. Obama has failed to unite. The politics of Washington, and the people at large, are more divided than ever. The promise of “hope and change” is no longer operative.

Straight-talking New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, himself viewed as future presidential timber, will begin sharpening the Romney-vs.-Obama story in his convention keynote speech Tuesday night.

Ryan, not well known nationally before his VP selection by Romney, will introduce himself to the nation in a more personal way in his nomination acceptance speech Wednesday, recounting his impressive life story and giving voters a better feel for the person behind the politics.

And Thursday will belong to Romney, with what will be the most important speech of his life.

He must close the deal on why Obama must be a one-termer. And he must show that he and Ryan know the way forward.

So we say this to the storm called Isaac: Get off the stage. It is Mitt Romney’s time.

Interesting GD, I watched some of the first debates, I agree with some of the doctors talking points, but I don't want him as prez.
for many of the same reasons I thought McCain was a poor choice,

Un like Obama, I think that Romney can stand honest intense scrutiny. I dont agree with all of his points but I believe that he has the smarts and the strength of character to do whats right and needed

one of my concerns is that folks may be expecting improvement over night and that wont happen.

Ron Paul was and is a non-starter. He never got more than 3% or so of the popular vote. It doesn't mean that he doesn't have something to contribute.

Not every person with good ideas will make a good President.

The biggest turn-off for non-Paulites is the take it or leave, I'm taking my ball and going home attitude if you disagree even the slightest with Ron Paul.

I'm glad he isn't the candidate.
