There have to be some female engineers or some of you must know some. The wife and I think our 16 year old daughter would do well in engineering and we are wondering how women engineers came to be engineers. The guys i know are easy; there were gear heads or game geeks at a young age but the few women we know were not. So all you women out there send me an email with answers; What got you interested in engineering? What type do you do? How would you get a young lady interested? I am NOT a female BUT I know that if she gets a degre in peteroleum eng. with high grades the oil companys will pick her up they hire a lot of women in that feld. | ||

Yeah it is a wide open field for women. They are very underrepresented and companies and schools want to see that change. | ||

Sunny (my VERY significant other) is an engineer with nearly 25 years experience. I'll see if I can get her to PM you. It's getting far better the past couple decades. When I worked at Alcoa, MOST of the research projects at Alcoa Center, PA were run by women engineers and scientists. | ||

Oh and Sunny's dad had a 3 bedroom house with carport and 8 car workshop. He raced Formula V back in the day and she always worked with him in the shop. | ||

Just go talk to some universities. If she's a good student, she probably qualifies for a full scholarship for an engineering program. It's the English Literature majors who have to get college loans so they can land those low paying jobs (that such a degree qualifies them for) and then struggle to repay the loans. This often involves not bathing for two weeks while trespassing and holding cardboard signs informing everyone of their poor decision making capabilities. | ||

My friend who lives in Colorado is a female Chemical Engineer. She got her undergrad from Michigan Tech and her grad from Milwaukee School of Engineering. I bet she would like to talk to this young lady and I will give her a call today or tomorrow. Her dad was an engineer who encouraged her (and me) to do whatever we wanted regardless of gender. In junior and senior high, when other girls our age were at the mall, we were in the woods or at the farm or places that were probably too dangerous to be climbing trees, building things, crashing bikes, fixing bikes, skiing, boating, hunting, fishing and just being outdoors in MN. Or traveling out of MN, and for her, traveling abroad. She knows a few foreign languages which she learned as a foreign exchange student. She always got picked on for being really smart but stuck with it, got her degrees and made her own path. She is currently mentoring my son who is having some bully issues at school because, like her, he is really smart. She is currently head of R and D for her division and loves her job. | ||

Society of Women Engineers (SWE) http://www.swe.org Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) has offices on every campus with engineering curriculum. BOTH groups will take the time to meet and talk to her. | ||
