well my left foot has been killing me for a few months now so i decided to do what i never do, go to the dr!
he asked me the symptoms ect & went right to it "you have plantar faciitis". couple x-rays, a cortizone shot, orthotics & i'm on my way.
looks like who knows what caused it, not really sure about a cure, just stretch and wear some insert thingys.
anyhoo the shot really worked, it hasn't hurt for a few days now : ) anybody have any expierence with this? cures? what helps? jogging has been out of the question & i'm worried i may somehow cause this to flare up again..

I had it for 3 1/2 years and just this Spring it let up on me. Yeah I had a series of shots,1000 dollar orthotics. Even put me a walking brace. There is no cure. It goes away but nobody can tell you when.

I had a real problem with PF a couple years ago. I say a doc about it. She had me stop running for a couple weeks, showed me some stretches that work the bottom of your feet, and told me to ice it a lot. Two weeks later I started running again with very restricted mileage. Basically I was doing 2 miles at a time, 4 mile a week. I slowly increased my mileage and had no further issues. I eventually worked up to a 50k (31 miles) about 9 months later.

Try this.

Medical tape, the white stuff, 2" wide.

1) Wrap tightly, two times around, right above the ankle bone.

2) Wrap to the tension of the tape, starting and finishing on top of foot, one time, between the ball and heel of the foot

This may do the trick for you too. I used to run on the GE Corporate Track Team.

By the way, 2) above should start on the bottom of the foot, pulling slightly to end side of the tape.

You'll need to start with the whole piece of tape you will use so that the "seam" is on top of your foot.

thanks for the tips!
the pain in the mornings was/is terrible, i can hardly walk. that's what the redwing boot thread was about a few weeks ago. doc says new boots won't matter. not sure what's making the pain go away right now, the shot or the little foam arch support things?
3&1/2 years, wow! that sucks. this has prob been going on for a year seein how time flies and all but getting worse. bad enough for me to see a doc.
my deductible is huge cause i'm pretty healthy and all so the custom orthotics will be on me : ( that's what doc said is what i needed. these foam things feel pretty good though! and at $20 a pair i wonder if they'll do the trick?

I have it. Start conservatively and work up. Don't buy the expensive orthodontic to start. Shot will help calm it down so that you can then try aggressive stretching. The tendons across the bottom of you foot are working too hard and then when you sleep they tighten up and in the morning terrible pain.

If you can't control it with stretching go to one of those fancy shoe stores that wells New Balance or Aertix shoes. They can fit you up with a cheap orthodic that may be all you need. Mine are abotu 80 bucks and I only wear on on the left foots. Works great. If I go barefoot too much the pain comes back so I have to avoid that.

Mine got started because the arch in my foot is in a funny spot. I where size 10 shoes but my arch is more like a 10 1/2 so it falls in the wrong spot for the standard arch support in shoes.

The best advice anyone can give is listen to your Doctor. Everyones feet are different so no one person can give advice on what to do. I went through a series of 5-6 times of shots over more then one at a time. My foot was put in a cast material to make a mold of my feet to have custom orthodics made for inserts in my shoes. I had a severe case that I thought i may not ever be right again. I tried every lil tip I could get. Best thing I really could do was listen to my foot doctor and it helped but it took a very long time. Good luck it sucks but have faith...it'll go away.

I've had it for about 15 years ( I'm 43 now ). Went to a Dr., he wanted $500 to make orthotics for me. I'm cheap. I bought some from a TV commercial ( Phaze 4 orthotics) work great and I still wear them every day. I work on my feet LONG hours doing construction too. Best 20 bucks I ever spent.

Roll your foot back and forth over a golf ball first thing in the morning. It will loosen it up a bit.

Sorry to hear.

I've had it for about 10 years now. I got the custom orthotics and wear them all the time except in my riding boots. They keep it manageable. My best advice though is don't wear the cheap sandals or flip-flops, ever. One day in them and I'm back to square one again.

I'm pretty convinced that years or skateboarding did in my left foot.

well crap, looks like i did this to myself! i been wearing the cheap flat flip-flops all year. you know, the foam old school ones with the stripes on the sides. totally flat with zero arch support. i'm an idiot...

ok i'm liking the cheap rout, i've got more bike farkles to buy : ) i hear some stores (meijer here) have some dr scholls thing you stick your foot into & it tells you what insole thing to get. about $40 or so.

i have a follow up visit next week

I've had that twice and both times the foot doctor just made a bandage for my foot to help relieve the pain and it went away in a couple of weeks.

One of the most important things you can do for your feet as you get older is buy a good quality, Comfortable, and proper fitting shoe to wear. When you get older, the bargain rack is NOT the place for you to shop for shoes!!!

Look for a Chiropractor or a Physical Therapist that practices Graston Technique.

This is pretty common with Army guys.

You need to stretch out the muscles and ligaments. You can try rolling/massaging your sole with a golf ball as boltrider suggested, but i'd start with a tennis ball.
i also know guys who freeze a bottle of water and roll their feet on that.

I've had it for years. Things that help:
A good foot insert. Some people can get away with Superfeet. Pair with a stiff shoe that doesn't flex much at all except at the ball of the foot and forward, and you'll feel much better.

Also these products:
The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution - Book
Foot rocker
Night splint
Massage ball
Arch exerciser

Pete,

I read your statement. Whether a therapist can help I don't know considering a foot specialist is probably your best bet. But a Chiropractor cannot help a PF problem.

thanks a ton for the tips! i guess the best news is that it's not permanent!

i can't believe the little heal spur that showed up in x-ray isn't causing this, but that's what they say i guess

oh and while i was at the foot dr i ordered some sweet slippers! i can't wait till those come in : )

Dana;

I suggest you read a little about Graston Technique, especially when it comes to PF. You might change your mind.

Chiropractors and Physical Therapists are the main disciplines that are taught GT. I mentioned them because they are the most numerous and easiest to find.

Pete,

I know plenty about Chiropractic. My Father was one of 46 years here in Racine and was one of the two Chiropractors that made it possible to have there work covered under health insurance here in Wisconsin. Still is to this day battle with some insurance companies. Many Chiropractors have ventured in other areas to broaden there practice. I tend to stay with a DC that stays where they specialize(the spinalcord). That is why I said see a specialist (A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine)

I do NOT recommend custom made orthotics.

They are really a great invention for the people that make them and charge hundreds for them, but think about it, all they do is measure your fallen arches.

Simple $20 plastic orthotics actually raises your fallen arches better.

At least this is my experience having tried both.

The following is from kp.org (Kaiser). The only other additions I might add is that when giving advise to patients I also tell them to keep hard soled shoes next to the bed so if you need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, put the shoes on, NEVER go barefoot. Also, a PA I know tells his patients to purchase inserts from places like REI, they're cheaper and you don't need the expensive orthodics.

--------------------------------------

How is it treated?

No single treatment works best for everyone with plantar fasciitis. But there are many things you can try to help your foot get better:

Give your feet a rest. Cut back on activities that make your foot hurt.
Try not to walk or run on hard surfaces.
To reduce pain and swelling, try putting ice on your heel. Or take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin),naproxen (such as Aleve), or aspirin.
D0 toe stretches, calf stretches and towel stretches several times a day, especially when you first get up in the morning.
Get a new pair of shoes. Pick shoes with good arch support and a cushioned sole. Or try heel cups or shoe inserts (orthotics). Use them in both shoes, even if only one foot hurts.
If these treatments do not help, your doctor may give you splints that you wear at night, shots of steroid medicine in your heel, or other treatments. You probably will not need surgery. Doctors only suggest it for people who still have pain after trying other treatments for 6 to 12 months.

Kaiser doctor had me to get some inserts that look like 3/4's of a Birkenstock sandal. Relieved the pain of walking but didn't cure. Next he had me put in a Spenco 3/4 insert, not an orthotic, on top of the other insert. This was the second time I had this problem. He also said do not walk barefoot, ever, also stand on a rolled up washcloth when showering. I bought some Birkenstocks to walk around the house in.

I now have no pain, use no inserts, and walk barefoot all the time. The biggest thing that helped was stretching before getting out of bed each morning.
