Been using Time Warner Cable for 20+ years and they recently managed to degrade the signal where one of my cable ready TVs no longer tunes to cable ready HD signals. They are less than helpful in solving this problem.

I am looking at options and ATT Uverse is a candidate. Anyone have experience with them? Feel free to chime in about DirectTV or DISH but FIOS is not available in our area. This should be more fun than a political or religious thread.

I bought an inline amplifier to boost the signal on my cable. It took care of the job. This is the unit I ordered:

Thanks, Rwven. A TWC tech came to our house but failed to diagnose the problem and did not offer any solution including your proposal. It is probably time to see how bad the alternatives to cable are.

Tom (Reindog):

We've had AT&T u-verse for a couple of years. Way overpriced IMO.

Looking to install my BIL's digital antenna and see what I can do with that and Netflix.

Really tired of spending $2,000+ per year!

We got Uverse a few months ago. The installer was great and we have no quality problems. They flat out lied about the $100 debit card promotion and my wife spent 4 hours being bounced from person to person trying to find out what the deal was. Nobody knew Jack in their customer service area. TERRIBLE!!! We've written that off. They owe our neighbor a referral fee too.

in my experience i was fed up w/ TWC, tried Uverse and never looked back, cheaper than TWC for the same channels, and i had no issues getting the rebate card, just had to call them up and tell them where to send it.. however i am toying w/ the idea of nixing cable all together and just going w/ Netflix, but i haven't made the jump yet...

I received a $25, $50, and $200 gift card for signing up for a one year contract and ordering online. That pays for about three months of service. It took about six weeks for the cards to show up in the mail.

Also, that's about $50 less per month than I was paying Charter for fewer channels and no HD. I'm pretty happy with uverse.

We love our Uverse. We had no problem with our rebate cards ever. Our service has been great both the technicians and the phone personnel. We left TWC and have been very happy ever since.

I've got it and on the whole it's pretty good. The internet is way faster than the dsl we had before. However I do have some gripes;
Customer Service: It took them three attempts to ever come out and install. That would have cost me three days from work if my fiance hadn't been there (she's in school and not currently working). Also she had the time and inclination to call and deal with the customer reps. The customer service was so bad that if it had been me on the phone with them I'd have cancelled the order before they ever installed; they dropped her call a few times after long hold times and I don't think they ever gave any reason why they missed the first two installation appointments.
The tv interface isn't my favorite either. They include regular and HD channels (HD channels don't override nonHD) so this makes for an enormous list of channels, so I rarely channel surf and only watch a few channels.
Also you can't watch back to back recorded shows. On DirectTV I could record a bunch of the same show, select that show list on the dvr, and watch through them all back-to-back. On the Uverse dvr it stops at the end of each recording and you have to go back through the menu to start the next one.
Also either there's no slow-motion capability or I just don't know how to access it. I really miss this when watching races.
On the plus side, the dvr will record more shows at once and the wireless second tv-box is really neat, even though I only watch tv in one room.

All:

Thanks so much for your opinions and experience. Keep 'em coming and it is highly likely that we are going with Uverse.

Counterpoint:
Just as an experiment, my wife and I bough a set of old fashioned rabbit ears from best buy for $10.

We were shocked to find how many channels we could get. Lots in Hidef!

I have no idea of how close you are to a metro area but it may be worth a try.

Tom..
Tune in to a session of Leo Laport. He extolls the virtues of DSLextreme. Since you can not get Fios.

That will only cover your internet a needs.. not your cable needs.

I have Fios and it is awesome! Since that is not available in your area... well.. that sucks.

Two words: Direct TV. That is two words, isn't it?

I want Verizon to push Fios out to more areas, they now offer plans going up to 300 megabit. Three. Hundred. Megabit. I am really tempted to up my plan to it.
