Lou "Mystic" Usher, and Carol Usher

Hey y'all.
Lou's having a difficult go of it here lately.
You remember back a little while when he had the "widow maker" heart attack, and you sent your thoughts and payers.
Well, he needs them again.
This is from Carol:
What a difference a day makes. Lou rested all day yesterday, packed up and off we went to the Blue Heron. He got set up, played one song and couldn't do any more. I rushed him over to Urgent Care, they said take him to the ER. He wouldn't go till we went by Blue Heron and got his stuff... it was almost an hour after "feeling bad" when we were almost to the ER. Lou was fine. Urgent Care had check his heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen... all good. And so he had me take him home since there were no symptom or anything to treat.

So we went home. I unloaded the car, he repacked his stuff the way it is suppose to be, and we went to bed as usual. I woke up at 4 to use the bathroom, when he told me he was bleeding internally. He had just gotten up too, and discovered the bleeding... at least I think he had just discovered it... he doesn't all ways tell me important things right a way. He could hardly walk, and I was scared to drive 45 minutes so I called 911. They sent an ambulance to evaluate if they needed or I could take him, but to the ER he needed to go. He became weaker waiting for the few minutes before the ambulance got there, and they ended up taking him. The ER staff tested immediately, he was bleeding internally and began other tests. His blood pressure sitting and laying down was about normal, but as soon as they stood him up it dropped so much they determined there had been a significant lose of blood and he was probably dehydrated as well.

They did a CT scan on his digestive track, and have since admitted him to the hospital and moved us to the 5th floor, where he had been in March. The nurse we had that day is his nurse again today, and he couldn't believe the difference in Lou and is very concerned. Lou can not stand or walk, it takes all his energy to use the bed pan, and fortunately, he has been sleeping most of the time. We are waiting for a specialist to review the charts and scan, along with the internist treating Lou. He is on clear liquid diet, IVs and blood draws ever few hours. They may need to scope him upper and lower and have not determined yet if transfusion will be necessary. If so, I'll go give blood to help offset costs.

We really thought he was doing better yesterday when I talked to you. I hope he gets better just as fast as he went down. He's very scared at the moment and worried. My brother told me to just keep smiling at him and tell him it will be okay. So that's what I've been doing... because we all know IT WILL BE OKAY, right?

This was us on Saturday. Lou seemed to be feeling so much better. He mowed the lawn, played music at a party and we had a good weekend.

I asked Carol if Lou would enjoy some cards and well wishes from the likes of us...

Oh I think getting cards would be great! If our home address is better to use, my daughter is bringing mail daily.

Lou
135 Quail Circle
Central, SC 29630

I think that would really mean a lot to him.

Please, and Thank you!

Thanks Glitch. Kim and I have been in contact with Carol over the last few days waiting for good news.

Kim just got off the phone with Carol and we can donate blood locally in his name, we believe, to offset their costs. Kim is going to call the bloodbank to verify.

Prayers, many of them, are being sent as we speak.

Doctor just called. They only had to scope him from the top down to find the problem. Ulcerated crater in his Duodenum, just below his stomach, oozing, not pumping blood. They are going to try IV medication and transfusions to see if that will fix the problem. No cancer or anything like that discovered. No thank God no surgery required. All sounds like the best possible news. Your prayers have worked! Not sure what sort of recovery time or life changes this means, but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. And sure it's nothing we can't handle.

Have they given him any transfusions yet? Not that I'm a doc by any stretch, but it SURE sounds like he could use a pint, mebbe more...

A long time ago I had a slow upper GI bleed, which led to an "Exorcist" type spew, an ambulance ride, and a little more than 2 pints to top me off... not much fun.

Do keep us posted. Prayers up!

Lou, Jim Corso here. I was the gimpy yahoo with the cane and all them rock star pix. Not sure if you'll read this or if Carol can for you.

Just a little over a year ago, I had to have a emergency blood transfusion. I was bleeding out and didn't even know it was happening. Was pretty scary moment in my life, was close to the big one and didn't even see it coming. Thankfully I had a pretty good doc at the time, who saved me. And that was just by chance. One week prior I had no doc at all.

Turned out I had multible ulcers in my stomach and my body was just absorbing the blood.

Hang in there my friend. It's a scary moment in time, I know. But it will pass and before you know it, you'll be back to picking that beautiful Ovation of yours.

My thoughts are with you and will continue to be until I see your out of the woods.

Your friend Jim

I think I see the bright spot in all of this. There's surely a song in there somewhere about an ulcerated crater in a oozing duodenum.

Lou and Carol are back on my list!

From Carol this morning:
Good Morning, doing better today. We both got a little more sleep last night. He can stand on his own while they take his pressure but still can't walk. Giving liquid diet, but had included yogurt and puddings... Hemoglobin number improving slowly on his own. They didn't have to give him blood last night after all. He's much more conscious now too, and it sure is good to see these improvements, not matter are small. The medication for the ulcer is working, and the blood thinner working out of his system, so between the two bleeding is diminishing. Will let you know more after we see the doctor today. Thanks for hanging in there with us.
So things are looking better, so please keep up what y'all are doing!
I'm trying to figure a way up real soon.
I'll let y'all know when I'm headed up.
. . . it's a tight family, spread over a large area.
So true!

Some more progress!
Thank you both so much! It means so a great deal to both of us. Lou is doing better today, much more awake and alert. Dr. Scowcroft just came in to talk with us. He's still waiting for the results from the stomach biopsy he did, but reassured Lou his stats are stable and improving. Lou asked if he'd be able to go home tomorrow, he just said, No. Not tomorrow. They have taken him off the IV and he's a regular diet with few food restrictions. They are going to start an aspirin back tomorrow for the stents, but not the blood thinner for a while. Not sure yet what if any blood pressure medications he may be on after this... right now, the pressure is still too low. They have lengthen the intervals of blood and pressure testing, so there are few interruptions. We may actually get some real sleep tonight. My daughter came up this morning with a few more things from home for us, so we as comfortable as we can be. Appreciate the prayers and support through all this. You're great friends and we'll forward to seeing you soon!

Lou, you’re over there and I’m over here, and I’m sitting here thinking of you after I got word you were playing some back road bar and weren’t feeling good. Sorry to hear you’re in the hospital sir, is there a little salt and lime in those potions the old Ladees are giving you? Drink it all like you should. You don’t need no doctor to tell you you’re okay though – you’re okay.

The one that loves you is arm in arm keeping you company and holding you near. I’m sure you want to pack your bag and toothbrush and get outta there though, back to Cuervo’s neighborhood, back to the crowd and the cheers, back on the bike heading down Highway 1 to the next Roadshow.

Hopefully you’ll only be there a little while – do the best you can do and you’ll be on your way home.

Ride hard,

We had good news earlier, but I was away and missed the update, but then this...
Spoke too soon. We thought he was doing better and in better spirits. But, Doctor just left. Hemoglobin down to lowest number. Hanging 2 units of blood. No out of bed, stopping the new blood pressure med and aspirin. Scheduled to scope him again tomorrow. Earliest we could be home is Wednesday otherwise surgery. Sure came as a surprise... Really expected he had improved so much. But it was just the medication, and the side effect was the bleeding I guess. They hope In scoping tomorrow the may be able to do something to seal it off.
Come on everyone! Lou needs us!
