Pretty much used to be a sci-fi only junky, with a smattering of fantasy. Lately have been reading some adventure stuff, but got totally engrossed in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy. Great story. The protagonist is so damaged it is a wonder she can still breathe, and you totally root for her. I also watched all three of the Swedish movie versions. I saw the American version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", and while it was good, I thought the Swedish version was better. |

Just finished "The Wrecking Crew"
Killer book about the early years (1960-1970ish) if pop rock and roll.
Most of the songs you heard are NOT played by who you thought.. |

Also having an anniversary this year is one of 3 books that has changed the world.
For the Worse.
Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson.
A fiction book written by a bitter woman dying of cancer, that led directly to the EPA banning DDT, not for any scientific reason, but to test the power of the agency. Millions have died of malaria, and other bug borne illnesses since then.
rates with Mein Kampf, that helped lead to a massive war with millions killed and tens of millions murdered in Camps.
and Das Kapital, that led to the rise of an evil religion that has murdered hundreds of millions of it's "own" people, and war innumerable, and worldwide. Continues to this day.
In lighter fare, as Asteroids cruise by, "Lucifer's Hammer" by Niven and Pournelle. Comet impact, aftermath, wide cast of characters. |

Bill Bryson - Notes from a big island
A very very funny take on living in the USA. It may be a few years old but doesn't lose anything for that.
Bill is a lecturer/author originally from Iowa who has lived in the UK for 20 years. Returning to New England to live and writing a series of articles for a magazine that have been publised in book form.
It will make you laugh out loud and question authority 
Also - just to show no bias, from the same author.....Notes from a small island. His time in England pulling our system to pieces with wit and irony.
