Not totally appropriate in this thread but the technology that we are seeing the last few years boggles this old school guys mind. As a couple of examples: some idiot lawmaker in Washington once said if seat belts were good on cars we should promote them on motorcycles.....WHAT! And then a while later another legislator said why not have air bags on bikes......WHAT! And then there is the question of traction control on bikes, which is somewhat standard on many bikes. WHAT!....Yes its true and at an interview with Danny Eslick on the podium at Infineon he thanked the mfgr. of his air bagged leathers. WHAT!.....also true. We are such and innovative country filled with so many diverse, talented people that I am not surprised when I see what Erik Buell has accomplished in a short time after leaving HD. The only thing that never changes is that things always change and mostly for the better but some things need to be just left alone. | ||

Wait for it....."Someone is selling a large number of parts that we are not making our share on, says big government!". I agree that a lot of crap is being sold that is not safe, but Darwin left us some basic rules to fix that, did he not? | ||

Other than the seatbelts, I don't see the issue with those things. An airbag suit could of done wonders for me in my last fight against a car. | ||

I agree Froggy on the air bag suits. I wish I had the money for one and other good things are left to the end user to choose. What I was trying to convey is that there are many great innovations lately but those idiotic things some people draft up should be left alone and discarded as just that, idiotic. | ||

Research by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that motorcycles with high-performance capabilities can encourage riders to speed and engage in risky behavior. I wonder how much that study cost them? As for airbags suits, I do ride with a HIT jacket but haven't put it to the test yet. | ||

The nannies agonize about the number of deaths when what would mean more is deaths per mile traveled, which probably has dropped, just like car deaths per mile has for decades. One of the "Duh" moments in the article is about how much more likely we are to die in a crash; hmm, victim in ATGATT, even, vs. belted and bagged driver in a steel box with crush zones? Even their cherry-picked experts can't claim that these velcro seats are actually causing accidents. Speaking of experts, they go to the very impartial Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and ol' Backwards Bike Joan Claybrook. (Google that if you aren't familiar with it, hint: she served in the Carter administration.) As an aside, I wouldn't be surprised if the $3 mil was his gross and his actual net was somewhat modest.} | ||

Media pushing for more nanny state big brother statism. Notably the author failed to cite even a single anecdotal example of an actual incident harming others that was directly caused by a non-govt approved aftermarket part. When it comes to air pollution, isn't it convenient that govt vehicles are exempt from the standards? Excessively loud noise is a huge irritation. I wonder how many of the whiners and complainers about loud motorcycles don't think even once about running their screaming leaf blower or weed wacker for minutes on end every weekend. Compared to that really irritating loud noise, the occasional loud bike is hardly noteworthy. People are funny. | ||

I wonder how many of the whiners and complainers about loud motorcycles don't think even once about running their screaming leaf blower or weed wacker for minutes on end every weekend. Compared to that really irritating loud noise, the occasional loud bike is hardly noteworthy. +100 Blake Had a neighbor that would do nothing but complain about the noise from my bike and how loud it was. Yes it was an aftermarket pipe but I was VERY respectful and drove very slowly in the neighborhood and ofter coasted home if it was late. But that Clown wouldn't think twice about firing up the weed wacker or leaf blower at 6 in the am on a sunday. | ||

Hey; ya know that LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES. Well, by pissing off the general population, politicians who are trying to curry votes will see that passing laws to quiet the noisemakers will get them re-elected. If we're lucky, the laws will only require a stock exhaust. But if the Insurance industry (Now, that's an oxymoron) takes notice, they'll buy enough politicians to get motorcycles outlawed altogether. Just think of the public savings it there are no motorcycles! Why, insurance costs will go down!(Fat chance!) The State won't have to cover the expense of caring for as many vegetables (Except for the Politicians) Everybody wins! Those motorcycle riders need to be protected from their own stupidity, anyhow. When it all goes down, we'll have the proof that Loud Pipes do indeed Save Lives. | ||

the pipes already are illegal for on road use... have been since the 70's when the epa first started mandating noise levels. this is a none issue some jackass that made his bux prolly got sued and is now on the other side of the fence as a part of his settlement. the amount of ignorance that people claim is insane. i refuse to believe that he didn't know. as for the writer he's just hoping that this non-issue will take off and he can claim some fame from it. sad part is he failed as a journalist by selling out and only presenting onside of a very clear issue, the wrong side. probably meant to stir up the 'cagers' out there about all of jerks on 2 wheels popping wheelies at mach 95 in rush hour traffic in L.A. because you know all them 'bikers' do that. it hasn't been studied in a repeatable manor therefore it's all hearsay and therefore worth what was paid for it... | ||

I think the comment section irked me more than anything. Most or all of them cagers whining about loud pipes but I bet every dern one of them at one point today will either run a red light/stop sign, speed, fail to stop when turning right on red, text or all of the above and never think one thing about it. If you're going to enforce one you need to enforce them all. Traffic laws are traffic laws right? | ||

Loud pipes aren't a safety concern... Idiots are! This Sunday on my way to my kids baseball game, I was behind a cruiser (no helmets) when a car turned left in front of him. It was close. Really close. He locked up the rear break and kept it up, did a u-turn and followed her into the lot to give her a piece of his mind. | ||

Funny you should mention that Thumper, I was on the other end of a similar scenario last Sunday on the way to Murrels Inlet. We were this side of Conway running 55 in a 55 and a Harley 2 up ran a stop sign and pulled out in front of us. It was rather humorous because he had a heel shifter and was banging the gears as hard and fast as he could and didn't seem to be making any progress, neither one wearing any gear at all and then turned into a gas station three blocks away |
